 Editor's Note
Upon awakening with a start in an icy bathtub in a strange room--with a woman's dead body inconveniently nearby--John Murdoch can't remember how he got there. With a police detective hot on his trail and a psychiatrist skulking around, Murdoch discovers that the key to his mystery is the presence of strange extraterrestrial creatures, the Strangers, who are experimenting with the memories of the humans in his city--from which there may be no escape. Ambitious sci-fi noir, with rich production design and a dense, Kafkaesque concept, made DARK CITY a cult classic.

If it is true, as the German director Werner Herzog believes, that we live in an age starved of new images, then ``Dark City'' is a film to nourish us. Not a story so much as an experience, it is a triumph of art direction, set design, cinematography, special effects--and imagination...Like ``Blade Runner,'' it imagines a city of the future. But while ``Blade Runner'' extended existing trends, ``Dark City'' leaps into the unknown. Its vast noir metropolis seems to exist in an alternate time line, with elements of our present and past combined with visions from a futuristic comic book. Like the first ``Batman,'' it presents a city of night and shadows, but it goes far beyond ``Batman'' in a richness of ominous, stylized sets, streets, skylines and cityscapes. For once a movie city equals any we could picture in our minds; this is the city ``The Fifth Element'' teased us with, without coming through...Watching it, I realized the last dozen films I'd seen were about people standing around, talking to one another. ``Dark City'' has been created and imagined as a new visual place for us to inhabit. It adds treasure to our notions of what can be imagined. - Roger Ebert ReelViews 9 of 10 The Crow will forever be remembered as the final performance of budding star Brandon Lee, who died as a result of a tragic behind-the-scenes accident. However, as intense as the hype associated with Lee's death was, it could not obscure the most impressive aspect of the 1994 feature: director Alex Proyas' startling, unforgettable vision. It's rare for any film maker, whether a veteran or a newcomer, to create the kind of compelling, endlessly-fascinating environment that Proyas brought to the screen in The Crow. Now, with his follow-up movie, Dark City, the director incredibly manages to one-up himself...If there's a flaw with Dark City (and it's a small one, to be sure), it's that the film takes a little too long forging a link between the audience and Murdoch. For the first thirty minutes, we're left floating, watching the confounding narrative unfold, marveling over the strange occurrences, and waiting for film to really grab us. Once that happens, it's difficult not to become completely engrossed. So, is the lengthy setup necessary? Almost certainly, and, as I said, any slow spots are only a tiny blemish on the face of a film that offers a gratifyingly original and stunning science fiction experience. - James Berardinelli

Everyone has already said it when it comes to this film. Overlooked, underappreciated. What wasn't said was that the DVD version is fantastic, with top sound and picture, well worth being in your collection simply because those who haven't seen it get to be blown away by your showing it. This is the kind of video transfer and sound that should have been on the Blade Runner DVD, but wasn't. Was this review helpful?

The thing that blew me away first was the cinematography. Then I walked out of the theater thinking that it was the most original movie I'd seen in years. Blade Runner has always been one of my favorite movies of all time, but Dark City is now ranked right up there with it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 a great reason to buy a dvd player. Thursday, December 23, 1999 angrychrist from peoria, il
Three things
One: Dark City is much better than it's Hollywood counterpart (The Matrix).
Two: This DVD has a whole bunch of fun things to do on it.
Three: If you really want to get wierded out, play the movie in French with English subtitles. Was this review helpful?

There isn't much to add to what others have already stated in praise of 'Dark City'. Proyas' previous film, The Crow, indeed lacked substance. I watched it after watching Dark City and it left a very sour impression. The highly successful 'The Matrix' starring Keanu Reeves following 'Dark City' was in fact almost entirely based on the Dark City theme. Dark City was a better movie, and deserves a place higher up amongst cult-setters. Unfortunately, audiences often don't realize the merit of a movie unless it has a well-known cast with 'name-brand' actors. Dark City is a smarter movie, with more intricate twists, and less gut-splattering violence. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Easily the most underrated film of 1998 Wednesday, October 13, 1999 Chocochunks from Denver, CO
This film is the next cult classic -- a masterpiece completely overlooked by audiences and many critics. I value it as highly as I do Terry Gilliam's Brazil and most of his other films. I was hesitant to watch it when it came out -- I didn't see any previews or commercials, and I felt that The Crow (Proyas film before this one) was terribly overrated and all style with no substance. A friend highly recommended I see Dark City despite my feelings of The Crow. I was blown away! In truth, it is a milestone in Sci-Fi, genius in every artistic and carefully crafted scene. I bought this DVD and have shown it to several other friends and family, and each one was mesmerized. One thing -- the story and acting has a bit of a 'rushed' feeling to it, but it seems as though that's how it had to be done to get the whole story in. It would have been nicer if the film was drawn out a bit another 30 minutes to an hour to soak in the drama and the visuals more. All else besides, it is one breathtaking experience. 5 of 5 Excellent movie for you collection Tuesday, August 03, 1999 Snowman from Ocean Springs MS
I was really suprized that this movie was as good as it was. I wasn't too impressed with the trailer and never saw it in the theater. Many many people on Usenet recommended it and I'm glad they did. Really a good film. The extras were great. Ebert did a great job on the commentary. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Masterpiece. Sunday, June 20, 1999 John from Chicago, IL
Truly magnificent Sci-Fi. Captures the imagination and creates the same futuristic feel as Blade Runner. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The most creative movie since Blade Runner! Monday, June 14, 1999 xadiaz from Jacksonville, Florida
In my opinion, this was the best movie for 1998. Alex Proyas delivered one of the best works in cinematography I have seen in many years. This is a futuristic movie that will be an example for sci-fi in years to come. Simply outstanding! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Truly Creative Sci-Fi !! Thursday, June 03, 1999 Kane from Atlanta Ga
Wow !! It's so rare to get a truly creative and original sci-fi film, but this one definitely delivers. Sure it borrows some stylistic elements from Blade Runner but the story is very imaginative and wait till you see the finale. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Dark City gives light to Sci Fi Tuesday, May 25, 1999 Brion from Rochester, NY
Dark City is a must-see for sci-fi fans and for the rest, it's one of the most visually stunning and thought-provoking films of 1998! If you've ever walked into a room and forgotten why you were there, you have to see Dark City! (two thumbs WAY up) Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Creative Filming and Original Plot Sunday, May 09, 1999 Dmenxia from Somewhere
Great movie! The dark atmosphere and incredible special effects mesh well with the suspensful dreamlike plot. I can't think of another film that combines modern movie magic and symbolic elements so eloquently. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Not To Be Missed Monday, May 03, 1999 rkollan1 from San Diego
This movie was way overlooked during its theatrical release. It is one of the most suspensful, intelligent, and visually striking films I have viewed in years. This should be a cult classic a la Bladerunner by the next millenium, once the overhyped Matrix (which borrows heavily from this movie) will have worn out its welcome.
For once, I agreee with Roger Ebert, who named Dark City his favorite movie of 1998! Was this review helpful?
