Wes Anderson, the creator of RUSHMORE and THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, offers another quirky, melancholic riff on familial ties and father issues in THE DARJEELING LIMITED. Francis (Owen Wilson) has invited his brothers, Jack (Jason Schwartzman) and Peter (Adrien Brody), to join him on a train trip for a spiritual quest through India. The brothers have been estranged since their father's sudden death, and each is now embroiled in his own personal drama. Jack is being toyed with by his two-timing girlfriend, Peter's wife is about to give birth, and Francis recently survived a car crash that nearly killed him. As the train chugs its way across India, the brothers try to reconnect, but mainly end up arguing and sharing pharmaceuticals. Francis admits that the real reason he lured them there is because he wants them to visit their mother (Anjelica Huston), who is living in a convent in the Himalayas. Peter and Jack are none too pleased with this plan, and immediately want to go home. The trip hits another snag when they are kicked off the train for a series of offenses. Stranded with their mountain of matching luggage, Peter and Jack are now insistent upon leaving. However, they suddenly find themselves brought together by an deadly accident involving some Indian children. The tragedy unites them, and they decide to continue on to their mother. Their visit with her proves revelatory, and they begin their journey homeward free of both their literal and metaphorical baggage.The film bears all of Anderson's trademark touches--stilted comedic dialogue, blunted emotions, and bizarre set pieces that pay subtle homage to the 1970s. Though the film is a bit quieter and less madcap than his previous work, it is still sure to delight his many fans.

Three brothers in crisis meet in India and in desperation, in "The Darjeeling Limited," a movie that meanders so persuasively it gets us meandering right along. It's the new film by Wes Anderson, who after "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" made "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou"...One of the film's attractions is its Indian context; Anderson and his co-writers Schwartzman and Roman Coppola made a trip through India while they were writing the screenplay...The casting of the three brothers is also a good fit. Their personalities jostle one another in a family sort of way; they're replaying old tapes. Then they have unplanned adventures as a result of the obscure medications, and end up off the train and in the "real" India with all of that luggage...I said the movie meanders. It will therefore inspire reviews complaining that it doesn't fly straight as an arrow at its target. But it doesn't have a target, either. Why do we have to be the cops and enforce a narrow range of movie requirements? Anderson is like Dave Brubeck, who I'm listening to right now. He knows every note of the original song, but the fun and genius come in the way he noodles around. And in his movie's cast, especially with Owen Wilson, Anderson takes advantage of champion noodlers. - Roger Ebert

India has long been a magnet for Westerners seeking enlightenment, both lasting and of the trendy, quick-fix variety, but few would-be spiritual seekers cart as much emotional baggage as the estranged Whitman brothers riding The Darjeeling Limited, Wes Anderson's mostly delightful seriocomic ensemble film. Whimsical yet suffused with melancholy--one of Anderson's signature motifs--this bittersweet depiction of the squabbling brothers' rail odyssey across India suffers an acute case of narrative sprawl in the third act. Yet there's so much that's captivating about The Darjeeling Limited, from the natural rapport of stars Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson, to Robert Yeoman's ravishing cinematography, that you're more than willing to overlook its flaws and climb aboard The Darjeeling Limited...Anderson and co-screenwriters Roman Coppola (CQ) and Schwartzman reportedly drew upon their own experiences traveling by train across India in scripting The Darjeeling Limited...Although The Darjeeling Limited pales in comparison to Anderson's best film, Rushmore (1998), it's still a vast improvement over the director's last and worst film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). - Tim Knight
