With a chorus and melody pointedly lifted from Stevie Wonder's "Pasttime Paradise," the rapper uses his laid-back flow to paint a picture of an average young black male whose life opportunities fall short of the dreams that the culture sells him. Rather than unfurling this tale in hardcore, gun-toting gangsta fashion, Coolio takes the reserved, simmering approach--quiet and seemingly mild-mannered, but seething and, eventually, ruthless. This style is also adapted by ex-Geto Boy, Big Mike ("Havin Thangs") and, in a more uplifting manner, Rappin' 4-Tay ("A Message For Your Mind"). | | Elsewhere, DANGEROUS MINDS goes for a spin amidst the new jacks, bass-mavens sleek stylists that make up the modern R&B universe.
