One of the best historical movies ever to depict the often impossible predicaments of women throughout history.
Set in 16th century Venice, women had few choices. One of those choices offered the benefit of education which seems odd at the risk and possibility of men feeling intellectually less than women.
Veronica's love of a man she can never marry forces her into the life of a courtesan, whose benefits allow her admission into a library where she cultivates her passion for poetry and becomes a published poetess.
The movie is lavish and opulent in it's scenery, complimenting the wardrobe of the times. The delightful humor only begins to fade when war and then plague strikes, taking an emotional toll on everyone, which inevitably evolves into the makings of an inquisition that places Veronica center stage.
It presses the point and outcomes that occur when commingling religion and politics, as Veronica finds herself caught between the two, with all the conflicts of hypochrisy and more.
I was also surprised at not hearing about this movie, as I came across it by chance.
A stirring, wonderful find and true period piece that no one should miss.

Catherine McCormack does a splendid job in the title role - why did they have to change the title from the original - The Honest Courtesan? I'm a great fan of Ms McCormack's, having seen all her films, and am looking forward to seeing her make her West End debut on the London stage in 'Anna Weiss' later this month. What a wonderful movie, very racy, not for those easily offended by nudity, very frank. This movie is shot wonderfully, Venice is wonderful, the sharp wit of the main character, a woman who becomes a Venician Courtesan because it seems to be the only way to see her lover. Wonderfully Done, does not go 'over the top' in any way. A wonderful movie, worthy of viewing by any mature individual. Was this review helpful?
