5 of 5 Great sound, buggy firmware Tuesday, August 11, 2009
A Customer from New Jersey

I bought the 4G Meizu because more than one person reported that it sounded "better than an iPod." Well, after a few months of use I have to agree there, at least for rock and jazz material. I think the Meizu applies some EQ to the output even if none is set, resulting in bass that is deeper than you'd expect, without muffling the mids or highs. It also handles resume well - after powerup it restarts at the exact spot where powerdown occurred. Battery life has been exceptional. I use the free MediaMonkey to load playlists, very smooth. On the downside, the firmware is buggy and there is often only one right way to do something; trying other paths will hang the unit. This might frustrate those who are used to rock-solid operation typical of Apple or Sansa products. As a video player it can do only 15 fps, which is not as good as other handhelds, and is not sufficient for material with lots of motion. OK for sitcoms, though. The price on buy.com is a steal, and with the money you save you can buy a good softcase for it, or at least some screen protectors to help avoid scratching the screen and glossy front bezel.

JC from Ft Lauderdale FL
I bought well in advance to give to my 7 yr old daughter. I pulled out the day before her birthday to charge it and the "lock" switch was broken. I had to go out at 10PM to a Walmart to buy another MP3 player to have for my daughter's birthday. Warranty is non existent, I've emailed and phoned the manufacturer until I got tired of it, no response. I contacted Buy.com and they will not take it back since too long has passed. All material on the box is intact, even the LCD protection film is on but I'm stuck with a $54 paperweight. May be a nice player if it works.

5 of 5 great for video - avi files Saturday, June 20, 2009
A Customer from Baltimore, MD
I bought this for my wife to watch video on (actually 2gig version). I never used a player like this before but found it easy to work out. The software on the CD converts AVI video files to the optimal size for the player and works well. My wife is watching all sorts of shows without a problem. It is a neat player, light weight with nice viewing quality.

1 of 5 Most miserable piece of CR*P you can imagine Wednesday, June 17, 2009
A Customer from San Diego
Not at any price. The software is terrible and the player doesn't do what it's supposed to to. I bought this to record my son's violin lessons. Sometimes the record function doesn't seem to work. Sometimes it does seem to work but then the unit can't play back the recorded material. Sometimes the unit seems ok, but then when I plug into my computer, the computer won't recognize it. Seriously, don't bother. If you still want one after reading this review, you can have mine. Email me at 'extra.email.jr' at 'gmail.com'.

4 of 5 Great deal for the money Tuesday, June 16, 2009
A Customer from Seattle WA
I recently purchased the 2 gig version. It takes just a small amount of time to become accustomed to navigation, feel, computer interface, file management, etc; I read the other reviews and completely agree with all comments regarding the quality of this device. One criticism of this device has been the sensitivity of the touch pad, but it provides functionality that provides alternative ways to navigate (for example, you can just tap the bottom of the pad to navigate downward rather than sliding your finger down the pad). I have never used this to load or view videos so I can't evaluate those functions. I took a cursory shot at finding updated software for this device from both Meizu and Dane-Elec websites without much luck, but that may be because I just didn't put forth enough effort. At the price and for what you get, there's little reason to not buy this item.

5 of 5 EXCELLENT MP3 AND VIDEO PLAYER Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Jeff from Houston, Texas
This is an excellent mp3 player. volume control is amazing and there is a browser to see your music or video list. Drag and drop function works excellent also. The CD comes with the package is useless. You have to find a media converter to transfer your RMVB or AVI files in to following format: 320 X 240/384kbps/15fps/.Once figured out, this device will demonstrate pretty good to see your movie, MTV, etc. on your hand.

5 of 5 Amazing Player Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Demian from Des Moines, Iowa
This is probably the best mp3 player i have ever bought. Everything awesome. The value, the performance, the ease of use, and the satisfaction it brings me. First of all the meizu miniplayer can play video, music, recorder, and an FM Radio. When i got my mp3 player, i was literally excited. The player has some awesome features that an ipod doesn't have. Like for your background. you can change your background on the player to anything you want as your background. it has games(2)Boxman and some chinese ancient game. the music is automatically in the mp3, all you have to do is click and drag. that easy. i don't really use the radio or the recorder, but they can be handy features at some time. the video is the only thing that disappointed me. it took me forever to get a video on there, if i got a video i would drag it in the player and hope for it to play it. but i only end up with 7 seconds of the video in there. it came with a CD that you can download a video converter, but when i downloaded it, it didn't really help me at all. So i decided to just leave it like that and not watch videos at all. just music is what i mainly do, which is what an mp3 player is supposed to do. So, in the end. this is a great player. you can customize the font color or the menu bar which is a cool feature. the bass in this player is amazing. my parents complained at the loudness of the player and my volume was at 10 out of 40. which was amazing. it also had some sweet awesome bass. trust me, this miniplayer is pretty awesome with like no faulties, except for the videos. you can even also update the player from a certain site (meizume.com). this miniplayer is one of a kind (i personally think this player is sooooo much better than iPod. i know i might be crazy.

5 of 5 Meizu Rocks Sunday, May 10, 2009
Dave from Detroit, Michigan
I bought one of these players a short time ago and was blown away! The sound is great, the array of supported file formats is perfect and the interface is easy to use. The unit is attractive, well built and the battery life is excellent. I also _love_ that this unit requires no special software to transfer files. Just hook it up to any machine (even Linux) and voila you can copy files to the unit. My only complaint is that all AVI videos must be converted to 18-20fps AVI and sometimes they can have slight jerky-ness during playback...still very watchable tho. As an encoded music player, this unit gets 5 outta 5!

1 of 5 Very Difficult To Use Monday, May 04, 2009
Jeffrey from Los Angeles
I wrote a review of the 8GB version, which I returned. The quality of this player is not questioned; but the steps one needs to take to create playlists, even program the FM tuner, involve constant tinkering with the operating software. For example, local FM stations must be set by programming the player's software using ID tags -- something you need to plug into your computer to accomplish. Otherwise, your station can not even be manually chosen. Any software glitches can result in losing playlists and pre-programmed FM station settings. Google the Meizu user forums and take a few minutes to learn what I did BEFORE you buy. By the way, Buy.com was great about my returning the item, and even sent me a prepaid shipping label when I explained my reason for the return. Thanks, Buy.com!

5 of 5 Superior quality product from China Thursday, August 30, 2007
ninja from Houston, TX
This little player is truely amazing. I've owned a few mp3 players (Creative etc) before but they are no comparison to this one. You get high quality sound (argueably better than iPod), still pictures, and most importantly, very nice video. You can play plain mpeq4 format videos without worrying about protection issues although converting the video could be a little pain to some people. The video quality is not as good as iPod Gen5 in terms of the frame rate (18fps vs. 30fps) but this only matters when you watch action movies. I don't care because I mostly watch regular movies, TV series or class videos. Screen resolution is the same as iPod (320x240). The size and weight of player is a big plus comparied with iPod. Battery life is also very good with either audio or video. You can easily extend the battery life because this player uses standard mini-5 USB connector. The voltage sensitive control that detects your finger movement takes a little time to get used to but you'll like it afterwards. Unike many other Chinese brand products (not China made foreign products), the build quality is excellent and you don't feel cheap at all. Overall, it's the best buy of the year for me (paid $90 total).

5 of 5 Meizu M6 MiniPlayer Saturday, June 23, 2007
steve from fairfax, va
i just got back from china where I picked up a white, 4gb M6 for about $90 in beijing. it really does live up to the hype. Pros: - long battery life (they claim 20 for audio and 5 for video...i haven't had it die on me yet) - great sound, with my Shure e2c headphones i hardly ever need to put it above 10 volume ticks out of a possible 40 - beautiful screen...i don't have a figure for brightness, but this is probably the best-looking screen i have seen on a player at this price point (you can get it from amazon for about $150, or much cheaper if you find yourself in china) - allows you to navigate by id3 tag info or file folders - does not require software to sync with a computer, but will work with songbird, winamp, etc. as an MSC or UTM device - reads text files - Cons: - must convert all video before transferring to device. in my experience so far, it converts at about 3x realtime (so an hour-long video takes 20 minutes). - doesn't convert all videos well (all .avi files seem to work fine, but it has issues with .wmv) - doesn't resume well. this may be a minor gripe for most people, but if you find yourself watching a long movie or listening to an audiobook, it can be frustrating to lose your place when you power down. Overall: - if you are lucky enough to find one of these in stock, buy it. the M6 is hands-down the most versatile music player of its capacity and price on the market, and probably will remain that way until meizu releases the upgraded version later this year.
