Like several reviewers on other sites reported, we also experienced freezing/lockup problems when trying to copy from VCR to DVD. The problem occurs in updating the disc after finished copying under certain conditions. This happens when I copied 5 hr 45 minutes of VCR to the DVD (6 hour capacity). Updating of the disk fails and the screen freezes and no command can be executed at this stage. To override the frozen mode, we had to do a hard "re-boot (unplug power and replug)."
Don't know what the minimum free space on disk should be. Instruction booklet is unhelpful on this issue.
I conclude that one must not try to overload the target (DVD).

Got this unit for my birthday. Software menu was a bit confusing. But it makes great copies of my vhs tapes. Got the unit that Costco sells. A lot less money than Panasonic or RCA.
