D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router

So far the item works great but since I have installed this new router I have not been able to remote desktop into any of my other pc's on my home network. I have looked everywhere for a setting I could change but could not find it. Other than that it works great.

I purchased this router for a rental. I decided to keep it for my primary house. I did a speed test with my wrt54g and had a download speed around 6mb/second. When I used this new router my speed test showed a download speed of 18mb/second. I ran the test with two other sites and received the same results. This was all done using an older Dell laptop with a wireless G card. I am very satisfied with this router.

Setup wasnt easy. I have to call tech support. I have both XP and Vista. I cannot use n speed with XP. It work just fine with G speed for all platform. Kind of disappointed with that feature. If you want to take full feature at n speed make sure all of your computer at home is Vista.

I installed and put this router in my garage. The signal of this bad boy is outstanding! I had a G router which i wasn't getting good signal in my house, especially in upstairs rooms. I got rid of it and replaced it with D-LINK XTREME (DIR-655)....BAM! My problem is solved!

I just bought the Extreme N Router and hooked it up in minutes and was able to use the basic wireless setup like a breeze. I waited a couple days to really start playing with the router and I gotta say it's AWESOME. I was able to setup my BB on the router using WPA2 which has been nearly impossible on other routers. I've also been using QoS and traffic shapping on all my systems as well as setup up each system's MAC address' for better security which was a real breeze. If you want better performance and extended Wireless range... This is a great buy and won't let you down. You gamer's out there will love it.

This is a great router for the price point. It is very easy to set up and if you are a more advanced user it offers the ability to restrict incoming and outgoing traffic. The GUI is very easy to use and there is now a firmware upgrade that allows you to use the usb port on the back that is normally used for the windows connect now to connect a usb device. once connected you have to install an applet on each PC on the network, then you can connect through the router to the usb device. There is a flash video that better explains the configuration possibilities on the DLINK site. Overall this router offers the best performance at it's price point over all the other competition.

I have had the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router for about 3 weeks now and I couldn't be more satisfied. Having had a wired router previously certainly helped with the setup of the new router. Some knowledge of these devices is required as the instructions are a little vague. But once you get the hang of it, setup goes smoothly. The recent release of the D-Link Shareport USB Utility makes it very easy to set up your Network printer. Performance has been nothing short of spectacular with outstanding signal strength throughout my user area. Maximum security is easily obtained - Just read the OnDisk instructions and you will soon have expert knowledge of not only the setup, but the actual technology itself. I would recommend this router to anyone. BTW, the Buy.com shipping and tracking info was excellent!

Setup was easy and the wireless coverage is very good. No problems, works flawless. The performance is excellent on this router. Both in the number of simultaneous connections (200+) and overall throughput.Excellent range would recommend it to everyone!!!! .

This router performs very well however, it took 3 days to get it working. After several calls to their 24/7 help desk (some I had to abandon because we couldn't understand each other), I finally found someone that didn't read from a script and have me do useless things to connect to the internet. After 3 days, the problem turned out to be the firmware level. Once I downloaded the latest firmware and installed, the router worked great.

I was happy to dump my older routers (1 wireless and 1 hub) and replace them with this sleek and, my kids say, pretty. Seems like everyone loves those blue LED's. I think it is a bit too much when the room is dark but it's cool. I have yet to use all the features. Support was great help setting it up. I just had to turn off filtering.

BOUGHT THIS TO UPGRADE FROM D-LINK DI-524 WHICH WAS TROUBLE FREE FROM DAY ONE. BUT FOR A SECON,D I REGRETTED THIS PURCHASE. THERE IS NO QUICK INSTALL. AND NOW THERE IS THIS ANNOYING MAGIC NETWORK THAT THINKS ALL PURCHASERS ARE GEEKS. CAN'T THEY JUST PROMPT YOU TO SECURE YOUR NETWWORK BY ASKING FOR A USER ID AND PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY RIGHT AFTER INSTALLING? WHO WANTS TO HAVE AN UNSECURED NETWORK? WHO'S GOT TIME TO READ AND ABSOSRB ALL THESE COMPLEX OPTIONS AND TECHNO BLABBER? MOST WOULD JUST WANT A TROUBLE AND INCIDENT FREE UPGRADE. I originally bought the linksys wrt310. It constantly needed to be reset. Tech support was no help. I returned it and bought the D-Link DIR-655. Set up was a breeze and has been working flawlessly. We have 6 computers hooked up to it. One is hard wired along with an xbox360 all the others are wireless

It runs very well and is the fastest router I've ever run. The QoS system works like a charm. However, if you don't have a good background in computers, this router may seem a little overwhelming to set up with so many options. However, if you do know what your doing, this router has everything you could want.

Setup Wizard and Customer Service made start up extremely easy.I bought this router mainly for the 6X increase in range, speed was secondary. I had a "b" router that provided a usable signal up to 120' and I wanted to increase that range slightly.The best range I could get with this router, through two walls and open yard area was about 80'. The D-Link service technician told me that the range for this router was approximately 35' and that a "b" router would have much further range but would be slower, which is true. The speed of this router is excellent but I would not buy the product for range.

Our linksys finally forced me to smash it in our driveway due to constantly booting our computers and game consoles during downloads and online gameplay. This d-link router will NOT disconnect randomly. The only problem was during it's "easy" setup. WPA settings would only work with the computer we setup the router with. So now we only use WEP which all our computers will work with the router. Good router, good value, fast speeds, constant connection.

I was lead a stray when I got a Linksys router as a gift. This linksys router had amazing range and was very fast, but dropped my connections constantly. Tech support was worthless, but I loved the speed and range, so I bought another linksys model, this time the top of the line. Same problem. Returned and tried a 3rd, this one was totally dead and had to exchange for another one that dropped connections constantly. Enough with the Linksys, and now I'm back to D-link. This top of line d-link can match the linksys range and speed, but without all the headaches. Don't have any gigabit wired connections yet, but I'll be ready when I do.

Setup was easy and the performance is unbelievable. Well worth the money. Only thing I had to switch out was my wireless print server. It wouldn't work with the Dlink for some reason so I purchased a Dlink print server and the problem was solved.

My new Extreme-N gigabit router that I bought through Buy.com was fairly easy to set up. I have moderate IT networking knowledge and it came in handy when I had to change the router's IP address from default to avoid conflicting with my DSL modem. It is noticeably faster than my previous DI-624 was.

I have installed 4 of these in home and company home office setups. Used for business and will handle more than one VPN. From basement to 2nd floor laptop or wireless desktop use. Never a problem with any. I like the gigabit network and I use that through out my house connecting 6 gigabit computers, a PS3, DVR and a IP phone. 2 of those computers are Home Media Center that streams HD video without a hiccup. Alot of configuration possible. Sometimes takes awhile to find the right config page, but most routers are like that. Will reserve IP address, QOS for IP phones and gaming. Other company seems to have come out with competing router but after many router and switch failures(why should a switch fail?)that I have run out of fingers. No more blue routers for me. With the Extreme wireless cards, Extreme N is true. Cons? So light, the cables move it around. Also is warm enough for a popular cat perch.

This was a replacement for my DLINK DI624, another excellent router. But some reason that thing was starting to drop connections and my Vista laptop had the worst time with that router. The extreme N installation was a breeze and now i have my PS3, XBOX360, Wii, my two laptops all working seamlessly without any dropped connections. Is an excellent upgrade and the range seems to be better and connection strength great. After installing this, i can browse my network, watch videos from my shared drive.

Router is easy to setup...easy to connect. No problem so far...no problem connecting. Light's on the router is bit brighter, so I suggest use it in work place and not in the bedroom. Design is sleek and antennas can be moved.

Had this router about 2 months now and have had no problems. Out of the box the unit was easy to setup and was able to browse online and print without problems. Also able to connect my Toshiba laptop via wireless without problems. I would recommend this unit to anyone. It is fast and very effect.

Hooked this unit wired to tower with 1000mb ethernet card and wireless to Thinkpad T61 with Intel built in WI-FI. Cat6 cable. Verizon's FIOS connection. Both machines Vista Home Premium. Replaced a Linksys "G" combo unit. No increase in wired speed, but wireless connection jumped from 54mbs to 130 mbs. Test download of large file from good site (xp SP2) ran at 1.81 to 1.95 mbs both wired and wireless. I'm happy with that. The only negative: The blue leds on the front are VERY bright and irritating. Two layers of masking tape over them brought them to just the right level.

I have wanted to upgrade my home/office network from 10/100 Mbs to 1000 Mbs, but the price was high and not all my computers had Gigabit ports. I needed an ethernet card for my desktop, a PC card for one laptop, and an Expresscard for another laptop. Those are all special purpose items tied to old hardware. It costs a little more, however, the USB2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Converter can connect to each of my older computers preserving my investment. I also got a great price on the backbone of my network a D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router, and two D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switchs. Now my high speed cable internet screams!!!

The router itself preforms very well. I was upgrading from a very old Linksys Wireless B. my signal strenght increassed about 15-20% The USB port didnt help me at all. We have 2 PC's and 2 Macs. The abillity to choose websites to block is a extremely useful feature for parents. Overall, im very satisfied, id buy it again.

Like I said - it works without any problems. The user interface is as good as any I've seen and I've not had any problem with wired or wireless access around the house. I've had one wired and four wireless computers using this router at the same time...

Set-up was difficult probably because I changed over from a Linksys G router and all the settings are different...I had my own network with several different users that all had to be re-configured. But once up and running...its awesome! Downloads scream and my range easily doubled. Very much worth the money and effort.

Finally, an answer to my Linksys WCG200 ver. 2 wireless router/cable modem. It turns out, Cisco Systems is not going to support the cable modems it produces under the Linksys brand for Windows Vista. My connection was gonig down every ten to twnety minutes. Attaching the D-Link to the cable modem has solved the problem. I have had this for a few weeks and have not experienced one down time due to the Windows Vista/Linksys problem. I can now watch You Tube without worrying if the connection is going to stay. One word of caution, the D-link and the cable modem cannot be set up with the same URL prefixes. You have to change the 3d set of three to another number. It was easier changing the linksys than the D-link for this issue.

I set up this unit in one of our locations so people could get to our company thru VPN. Later I found out that the unit only supports a max of 4 VPN connections simultaneously and even that only sometimes. Customer Service is bad. I couldn't even find out from them what their VPN capacity is, they sent me to the premier site where you have to pay every per 30 minute slot. What the hell is that, you can't give specs on your own product for free? First D-Link product I ever bought, had one that I got from my cable company for VOIP didn't like it, probably won't buy another one though. If your customer service people can't stand behind the products they sell why should I create myself more headaches.

The usb port on this router can't be used for an external device, its just for setting up network devices, so no usb printer or external harddrive, which makes it pretty much useless. The included CD that urges you to use it first was also useless for me, I am running Vista Premium and it would not connect to the router for configuration so I had to go directly into the router interface via IE. This was mostly painless and the network was up and running quickly. Wireless signal and network stability are excellent. I really wanted to use an external harddrive with this and share over the network, but no such luck, DLink really missed a good opportunity for an added feature.

I purchased two Manufacturer: LINKSYS Mfg Part#: WRT300N and after two days working with Linksys i am told they are both bad units" purchased at different times" and had to send them back, what a waist of time and now i see they are rated at one star. Best buy returned both units and i ordered this D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router - DIR-655 down loaded the soft wear and hooked it up and was up and running after one call to D link to add a password. They have it set up this way so for warranty purposes. Final comment best bang for the buck.

I have upgraded my Linksys 100mbps home network to D-Link's DIR-655 Gigabit. Very easy router to configure, even for first timers. For Ethernet connections, recommend Cat6 wiring for better bandwidth but nothing to do with router. For multiple devices (since router only has 4 LAN ports), recommend the D-Link Gigabit switch (DGS-2205). This is my 3rd router and second D-link; extremely satisfied.

I am very pleased with the performance of this router. It allowed to enjoy our kitchen with our laptops. I was borderline with other routers (g). I have it linked in to my PS3, DVR, and my Desktop and every one of them hums on the 1GB network. No problems whatsoever since I purchased it back in July. I make sure I upgrade the firmware whenever I can.

I had the router up and running in 5 minutes. I used the wizard with no problems.I only have G equipment, but my range increased dramatically. I would recommend to anyone.

Outstanding replacement for a more expensive LinkSys router that constantly requiring rebooting. The DIR-655 just works day after day, and does a much better job with VPN. Dumping the LinkSys router -- and installing the DIR-655 -- solved my nightly problem with "the network is down... reboot the router". The DIR-655 is the best router I have owned to date, has been rock solid for the past 4 months. The gigibit ethernet ports are an added bonus.

I purchased this router in November. It's very feature rich. Initial setup is very easy and straight forward. To really utilize the router takes some setup. The menu's are fairly easy to traverse but some intuitive knowledge of networking and ACL controls is pretty much a must. There are some help files related to each setting but the explanations are pretty basic. Overall I really like the router. I don't think there's much this router doesn't do or support if needed. I replaced my Linksys RT31P2 wired Vonage router with the DIR-655 and attached the Vonage router to it with the appropriate ports open for VOIP. It's been up and running without a reset since installation day which can't be said of the Linksys. Wireless range is very good in my 3 story saltbox house. I'm currently not using the wireless -N- capabiities but will probably turn it on in the not to distant future when I get the -N- card for one of the laptops I use. (The other is -N- capable already). I've heard of problems with encryption when running in mixed mode WPA. The blue status lights are very bright but not a problem for me in my home office. If you need a lot of option availability then this is a great router.

I wasn't sure how much of a difference this router would make on my network. After reading some of the other reviews, I took a chance and purchased it. Now I'm glad I did. I don't have any dead spots at my apartment. The router was very easy to setup with wizards and easy to follow menu. Some people are saying the lights on the router are to bright, but I don't think so. If your looking to upgrade your network or start a home network,I would definitely recommend this router.

I purchased this product based on excellent throughput reviews which I needed to wirelessly transfer video from my XP Media Center through my XBox 360. I was replacing a Belkin Pre N Router. The range on the DIR-655 is very limited compared to the Belkin Pre N and I have had to install a range extender. Since I have Wireless IP Cameras that can only use WEP Security, I have learnt that by enabling WEP on a DRAFT N connection the throughput speed is capped at 54mbps so I am back to square one!! Also, the D-Link has had random disconnects from my network every 30 seconds to a minute. After 5 hours over two days trying to solve this problem with D-Link they finally concluded that it was a hardware problem and agreed to send me a new unit. Beware - their customer service is bad. Phone system is pathetic, (I had three disconnects in one day while talking to a CSR and then had to dial back and get in the queue), and wait times are long, at least 30 minutes.
