5 of 5 Really a Wonderfull Product Sunday, May 31, 2009
Aji from NJ

This is a very wonderful product, if you are ready to spend some time to do research/configure. These are the features I liked with DSM-520. 1) Play the media from my computer storage 2) Play the media in additional storage devices from my network 3) Access internet media from Youtube/Holu, etc... 4) Play media directly from USB drive 5) Stream live TV channels ( You need to get the URL and configure manually) 6) Watch video podcasts from different websites. I am using DLink Media server/Play On media server/TVersity Media server together. I also shared media successfully using Windows media player 11. I feel like the Dlink media software provided with the product is not helpfull for streaing internet video/tv channels. So I am using PlayOn media server for internet media and TVarsity for streaming TV channels. Picture/Sound quality is good but it depends on the media you are using. Also video is streaming good mean without flickering. It has some draw backs like it does not support all the media formats (Check manual/technical specs). I am really like this product and it worth more than I spent for buying. This is my openion only. -Aji

5 of 5 Works Pretty Good... Wednesday, May 06, 2009
telesamad from Elizabeth, NJ
As soon as i had the unit, I updated the firmware and then started using it. Setup was very easy. I did not try wireless but over 100 mpbs switch i have at home, it works darn well - no skipping at all. Pros: Price was good, easy setup, works well. Used it with my PC and DNS-321 NAS enclosure and work seamlessly. Cons: I wish it supported 1080P, and more wide variety of video formats. I had some DIVX files with MPEG4 v2 codec - it cant play it and tried converting back them to MPEG4 and still would not work. Also, the software they include for active tv - it is very crappy and most of the features does not work. Ended up downloading a similar software from mediamall and works better now, still cannot watch youtube videos. Called tech support about it, offshore support was horrible and never bothered to call back. Overall: I listed more cons than pro, but it is because it does what it is supposed to do and it does what is said in the ads - so i did not add those in the pro list. i like this unit.

4 of 5 Works pretty darn good, especially with Tversity Saturday, May 02, 2009
4sx(dot)org from OH, Stow
Ive had this for proubably 2 years and they have done firmware upgrade to add new features, so they do activly do some work on this product still. I must admit I don't use the included software such, and I thought the media mall would me more like IPTV. it's not really, but what works really good is when you use it with Tversity. just do a google search for it and you find it its freeware. so good , I actually donated! but anyway it is a solid box with many capabilities, and worth the price i paid allot more back in the day and still thought it was worth it. just don't be afraid to try other media server software. you can have multiple one on pc and pike witch one u want. witch is good because they all have there prose and cons. Peace~

4 of 5 Finally Up and Going! Friday, May 01, 2009
Glad Cutler is Gone from denver,co
Setup took some effort with my Linksys router. Had to reset the router and re-install both router and Media Player software, but once I did, everything found each other and they are now cooperating nicely together. Little more setup than the average Joe will want to go through though.

4 of 5 DSM 520 Friday, April 17, 2009
Steve from Northern Michigan
I Upgraded from a DSM 320 for the HD output. Overall I am very pleased with the unit. Picture quality and smoothness is superior to the DSM 320. Mine came with firmware version 1.06. I am very familiar with how the unit sets up and works because of the 320 so I did not have many of the issue others experience. If you want to have your library of movies and music at accessible from a remote control this might be the device for you. Be prepared to learn how to encode videos though if you get it. This is something that you will end up having to do. AVIDEMUX works well. Also, the TVERSITY media server is superior to Dlinks version.

5 of 5 So far so good Wednesday, February 18, 2009
Eugene from Brooklyn, NY
Granted I only watched 3 movies so far, I'm happy. The center is connected to my wireless router with a cable, but the stream from my PC is coming in via wireless. No skipping (using wireless G). One issue I did see was using the server component (the software you install on your PC that enables streaming to the media center). It seemed to only remember the files that were in my shared folder when I initially installed the software. No amount of turning sharing on/off seemed to fix the issue. I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, so I am able to use Windows Media Center to stream the video -- this isn't an issue for me, but if the server software does not work on other versions of Windows, could be an issue.

3 of 5 Worth a shot until something better comes along Saturday, December 20, 2008
Kevin from Bellingham, MA
Not bad overall for my purposes... For install, the manual is not clear about how to input wireless security keys. I had to play around quiet a bit to get my security key configured correctly. After trying different combinations, eventually got it to work. I was concerned about wireless signal but it's exceeded expectations on that front. Wireless G router located upstairs, D-Link downstairs, more or less directly below the router and the signal is clean enough to stream audio, photos and video. D-Link interface is very limited. Lists of artists, songs, albums, etc come up in alphabetical order. NO options to sort on track number, etc so you have to rename your songs with track prefix in song title if you want to play in order from CD. Shuffle mode works great if you want random playback. There's no ability to update MP3 tags from the DLink software so plan on having those clean before you bring songs into DLink. D-Link will recognize playlists created with Widows Media Player. It's quick to set one up with what you want to listen to that day, fire up D-link on shuffle mode and let it run for hours. Digital audio connections pass a clean signal. Does the job for me despite limitations on the interface. Price is looking better and better. I think DLink in current state is better option than analog Ipod connection so it would be hard to beat for under $100.

3 of 5 Great value but has drawbacks... Tuesday, September 16, 2008
Jason Reskin from Boynton Beach, FL
Easy to set up (I expect this from D-Link), has optical audio, HDMI video, and everything in-between. Sleek, attractive styling. However, after a week of using this at home I found that it will not utilize the DTS audio track on DVD video (VOB), the remote is touchy and must be aimed too precisely, the GUI shows the file extensions and top-level folder, and the system grinds to a halt on large libraries (10,000+ songs). I am returning this item and will review the Netgear and Buffalo equivelants. I am also interested in the MvixUSA MX-780HD which is apparently not carried at buy.com at present.

2 of 5 Needs a few more generations of updates! Monday, March 05, 2007
Greg from Cleveland Ohio
This item has more negative points than positive. The concept is excellent but the execution is woefully lacking. dLink needs to seriously upgrade the firmware and more carefully beta test the results before releasing to the public. <br><br> I have had this for over a year and waited until now to post this review thinking dLink would surely update the firmware to fix the bugs. Unfortunately, that has not happened even though it automatically searches for and updates itself -if- an upgrade is available. <br><br> Here is a list of a few things I find to be a problem. <br><br> 1. hangs up frequently and needs to be powered down at the box to reset. The remote even stops working! <br><br> 2. is VERY limited in what flavors of video it will play. Probably my biggest disappointment of all. <br><br> 3. won't play DVD video, either homemade, ripped or downloaded subscription movies. <br><br> 4. the fast forward, rewind feature is nearly useless. <br><br> 5. very clunky, amateurish menues. <br><br> 6. doesn't remember where it was when playing MP3s, starts with the same song every time, even when using the front loaded USB memory sticks. Since it lacks a random play function, you end up listening to the same songs in the same order every time. <br><br> Most of the cheap MP3 players do a better job of this. <br><br> FYI - I also have the dLink DSM120 and see some of the same issues. Personally, I think it's a dLink problem. They need to re-think their firmware and user interface. The DSM120 is even more sluggish to respond. <br><br> Hopefully there will soon be better options available. <br><br>
