1 of 5 Mail-in rebate turns out to be a scam Thursday, November 05, 2009 Goe from Boston, MA
I bought this antenna from buy.com and I submitted the rebate form along with the original receipt and UPC. My claim was denied by D-Link on the grounds that the submitted UPC was not from a qualifying product. My attempts to contact D-Link concerning this issue remained unanswered.
A week after I received my denial card from D-Link, my upstairs neighbor received a nearly identical rebate denial card for a product they bought from a company called VineOne. The card is basically the same as mine with the same El Paso, TX return address but with a different PO Box number and the D-Link logo replaced with the VineOne logo. Their reason for denial was that the rebate was limited to one purchase per household, but my neighbor says he only bought one item.
I suspect both "rebate" offers were part of the same scam campaign, so I would advise everyone to stay away from this and maybe all D-Link products promoted through mail-in rebates.
As far as the quality of the product goes, it is easy to install but does not appear to work as advertised. The 7 dBi power boost just isn't there. In fact the reception quality in my living room (about 18 ft away from the WiFi router, with one wall in between) increased by less than 2% after installing the antenna Was this review helpful?

I normally have great signal strength indoors, but as soon as I move my laptop onto the porch, I drop down to 1 bar, so I bought this. I cannot tell you if it improved my inside signal since I had 5 bars before it, but I can tell you it didn't do one bit of good for my outdoor signal. And we're talking about 60 feet here. I live in a mobile home so I don't know if the wall material makes any difference. This buy was a waste of money for me. Was this review helpful?

I received this yesterday and plugged it into my wireless card. My signal went immediately from fair to excellent but it still gets dropped. The computer and the wireless router are in the same room except that the router is on the table and the computer is under the same table. I will monitor for a while. Was this review helpful?

After reading the long list of reviews, I decided to buy it for my HP Slimline HTPC that lies flat in the cabinet under my 37" LCD TV. It gets WiFi from a wireless router across 3 interior walls at a roughly 30 degree angle, and used to get 1-2 bars (usually Fair, only sometimes Good). This is with the stubby antenna hidden behind the PC and also blocked by a DVD player and a DISH Network receiver. The D-Link external antenna improved the signal strength to 4-5 bars (Very Good to Excellent) because I was able to set it on top of my entertainment center with more than enough coax cable to spare. Now it only has to deal with the 3 walls, and worked as advertised. It saved me from having to buy an "extended range" wireless router. Was this review helpful?

0 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Very good buy Friday, May 08, 2009 Dorky from Portland, Oregon
Bought one for about the same (discounted) price as here. Hookup takes about 3 minutes. Increased signal strength substantially, and it's better than just buying a router with more transmitter power because the gain works both ways with a higher-gain antenna such as this one.
A note to one of the criticizers further down the page: With the antenna pointed straight up, the signal is squirted out horizonally in all directions, like a doughnut. Putting this in your house upstairs and hoping to get signal in the basement means you will need to tilt the antenna down; otherwise, all your neighbors will see higher signal strength than you! I bought this for my sister and when I went to her house, I set it up (very simple). I tried screwing it into the back of the router but got no signal change. Next, I placed it on its base and set it near the router and I got an increase of 1 to 2 bars throughout the house. The older computer laptop went to very good and excellent from good. Overall, it did what it was supposed to do. Was this review helpful?

My home/studio is filled with metallic production equipment and a maze of walls and objects between the router at my desk and my bedroom. Before attaching the D-Link antenna to the router I only occasionally got enough "juice" to access the internet on my G4 PB. Consistent signal/connection ever since. So yes, I'm a fan :>). 5 of 5 Signal strength improved Tuesday, March 17, 2009 Tech lover from Houston, TX
My kitchen computer had a very poor reception of the wireless signal before I install this antenna and constantly dropped off. After add this antenna on, the signal strength is average good to very good and only dropped few times so far. Very good product. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 It Works! Monday, March 16, 2009 Jeff from Dublin, OH
Connected to my DGL-4300 Gamer Lounge Router that is upstairs on west end of the house. I can now use the internet on my laptop in the garage on ground floor east end of the house. The signal strength indicator didn't increase on the laptop but it works now and is consistently improved over the old antenna. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Position is critiacal Thursday, March 05, 2009 A Customer from Ohio
This antenna works well, if you take time to find the best position. I went from 10-20% with many drops per day to consistent 80% strength.
But, in placing the I spent some time finding the exact location. I found that 4 inches moved the signal strength from 20% to 80%.
With a rebate, this is a steal! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent Wednesday, March 04, 2009 A Customer from Manchester, NH
I attached this antenna to my PC that has a wireless card. The PC is downstairs while the router is upstairs. This antenna has dramatically improved my connectivity. Before, using the standard linksys antenna, my connection was painfully slow. Now I can talk to people via skype with video! It seems that the greatest benefit is achieved by connecting this antenna to the wireless card and not the router. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 Didn't add any range to my Dlink Router Tuesday, February 24, 2009 Mr_D from Wi
I tried this Dlink Antenna on a Dlink Wireless router and the signal strength on my laptop was the same with or without it.
I tried a 2nd laptop with the same results.
Different antenna positions made little difference so I unplugged it. It's big enough to work but it's not a 7dB Gain as the specs claim. 7dB would be a lot, this seems more like 0-.5dB, which is barely detectable. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Every Situation is different Saturday, February 07, 2009 A Customer from Central MA
It seems like this item is hot and cold depending on who is using it. I had bought this hoping to put it on my router, but I found out that the antenna wasn't removable. My fault. However, I put it on my PC and the signal went from a very intermittent 10-20% connection to a very solid 75%. I have not had any drops since I installed it.
As with everything, each situation is different, which is why I like Buy.com's no hassle return policy.
Try it, if it doesn't work there are always alternatives.
Works well for me! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 My experience ... Monday, January 26, 2009 A Customer from Raleigh, NC
I cruized through all the reviews on this item, and figured it was worth a shot if I improved the wireless any at all. My CPU is in a basement, with the wireless router upstairs. Without the antenna, I recieved barely a green bar on the network. Sometimes, people upstairs would walk in front of the computer, and this would knock it off line. AFTER the antenna install, I am bumped up two bars to a "Good" connection. This is an improvement, but not dramatic. If you are considering this for a similar problem, understand that you are not going to recieve a HUGE increase, only marginal. But in this example, it has improved the reception, and I have not been dropped yet since the install. And I can put off running a cable around and under the house for a few more weeks... 5 of 5 Works great in two systems Friday, January 02, 2009 codejockey from Davidson, NC
I originally purchased one of these to improve the wifi coverage in our home. I attached the antenna to our Asus WL-520GU router running DD-WRT firmware (v24-sp1). Despite being located in a rear corner of our entertainment center, the antenna improved the signal strength and quality at each of the three access points in our network. As expected, the access points with the fewest obstructions (walls, etc.) and closest to the router showed the most improvement, but even the weakest access point improved measurably. Based on these results, I ordered a second unit for my parents who were receiving a very weak signal from a free access point in their neighborhood. I connected the antenna directly to their inexpensive Trendnet wireless PCI card, and the signal improved significantly. Their connection is now reliable and much faster than it was using the antenna supplied with the PCI card.
Overall, I believe the antenna is an excellent value, especially if you can use a rebate/free shipping as I did. The construction quality is excellent, the unit performed very well, and setup was simple. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Works best as receiver antenna Thursday, May 08, 2008 Brian from Calhoun, LA

2 of 5 Does it do ANYTHING? Monday, January 28, 2008 Davidjm from Chester, NJ
Read lots of mixed reviews: have the D-Link DI-624 router at a corner of the main floor, laptop signal in far room upstairs (large wood-frame house) is "very low". NO DIFFERENCE with the "+7db gain" antenna. Me thinks it is a fraud. Was this review helpful?

All I know is that there's a spot in my house that I was having trouble getting a usable signal to. It would work sometimes, others not at all. Even when it worked, the signal was weak and the connection speed would step down to under 10 Mbps, sometimes to 1 Mbps. After installing this antenna, now I can always get a usable signal in that same spot. It's not a great signal, but it's always usable. I'm on it now and it's showing signal strength of Low, speed 48 Mbps. This was never the case before. I would buy the product again. Was this review helpful?

If you use a wireless network in anything but a 1-bedroom apartment you should absolutely buy this item! Buy.com has a fantastic price, especially if you get it with a rebate. This DLink antenna is a very high quality item with a sturdy base; I have my router in a convenient location, with the antenna atop a shelf for maximum coverage. With the old 2" antenna I would get 40-50% signal in the far reaches of my home; I was shocked to see that I now get 90%. There's hardly anywhere I can go that I don't get 95-100%. I'm sure results will vary, but anything is better than the 2" antenna most routers come with. It was so cheap I decided to give it a try and see if it made any difference at all- I can't possibly give this item less than a 5. Previously I was using two wireless routers to make sure I could get a good signal all over my house- thanks to this antenna I'm now only using one.
[PS- from some of the reviews here it looks like some people are plugging it into the wireless card on their computer. You can do this, but it makes far more sense to use it on the router itself to replace the factory antenna.] Was this review helpful?

I had hooked this up to one of my rangebooster 2320 pci cards, and it was reaching a router set up 50 or so yards away. going through 2 walls. the connection strength was 3/4 out of 5 bars. And the router is a rangebooster aswell. worked twice as good as the small antenna that came with the card. very pleased with the purchase. Was this review helpful?

We ordered several of these units. They improved reception for PCs located quite a distance from the DI-624 router when substituted for the PCI card antenna. They had virtually no value in increasing strength of transmission (over what we get with an older Hawking antenna) when connected directly to the router. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Did the trick Wednesday, November 28, 2007 A Customer from North Plains, OR
For a problematic system that was on the other side of 4 walls and a bathroom, this took it's signal from 15 MB/s to full 108 MB/s. Ping's went from around 200ms to around 50ms.
I was concerned it may not help after reading some of the reviews, but it really did exactly what was needed for me. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Worked for me Wednesday, November 28, 2007 A Customer from IA
I wasn't able to get a wireless signal from one end of the house to the other. I tried repositioning the PCI card antenna and even building my own cantenna, but I still couldn't get a reliable signal. I saw that this was on sale and decided to jump on it as a last resort. I got it two months ago, and haven't had a single problem connecting since the day I hooked it up!
It's also very easily wall-mounted, which is great if you want to position it up high for the best possible signal. The cable is plenty long enough to allow for this. It may not work as well for everyone else as it did for me, but for the price, it's worth a shot! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works well easy install Tuesday, November 27, 2007 geomathon from Marshfield VT
I unscrewed my existing antenna and screwed in the new one. Everything worked as usual over my wireless network: a Mac, a Dell PC, and an HP wireless printer. I can't tell exactly if it has improved my wireless network but it seems that I've had fewer lost connections. I'd buy it again. Was this review helpful?

For those complaining about the D-LINK ANT24-0700 7dBi Omni-Directional Indoor Wireless Antenna not improving signal strength, note that is it an "OMNI-DIRECTIONAL" antenna. That means, if attached to a router, the signal is transmitted in 360 degrees, i.e., all directions, and the signal is no stronger in one direction than another.
To increase the signal received by a computer in another location, try a DIRECTIONAL antenna, point it toward the receiving computer, and the entire signal is concentrated in that direction. (E.g., the D-Link 6dBi Directional Indoor Antenna - DWL-M60AT; take a look at it and note the difference in the antenna shape.)
Remember, these are basic Radio Frequency principles at work here, so whatever blocks or attenuates a radio signal will do the same to the Wi-Fi signals.
Just my .02 from an old ham radio guy. Was this review helpful?

This antenna does not meet the expectations I had from the advertisement of the product. I did pick up about 15% on signal strength two rooms away. First, had connected the antenna to the router (in bedroom). It had increased the signal to 'Excellent' for laptop in breakfast table. 2 of 5 Works for some applications Friday, June 15, 2007 Mr_D from Eau Claire, WI
Maybe someone will figure out why this unit only works for some people. I tried it with the supplied cable and directly connected to my Dlink DI-512 wireless router. Either way it made no difference in signal strength. I started out at 25% in my back room with the built-in antenna and it was the same with the external antenna. There were a few places in my home where the signal was less using the big antenna.
I don't get it, it's certainly a lot larger than the tiny built-in antenna but I think it has to be the exact "correct" length to work with 802.11 frequency's, not just bigger.
Maybe someone can do a scientific study who knows antenna theory but I tried every possible combination and it did nothing for my signal strength.
What I really need is a directional antenna so I don't waste all my power broadcasting in a wide circular area. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Improvement Tuesday, June 12, 2007 Dave from Liverpool, NY
I recently moved my comuter to a basement office and was connecting through a wireless card in my computer to a linksys router in a 2nd floor bedroom. My signal strength was very low and I was getting knocked offline frequently. Since hooking up the antenna to the card in my computer the signal strength is good to very good. I noticed that moving the antenna around causes the signal strength to change quite a bit and with some tweaking I was able to get a very good connection. The antenna was simple to hook up. It screwed in where the antenna on the wireless card was and that was it. Thanks - big problem solved! Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Not the greatest but it works... Wednesday, June 06, 2007 kiddragonsoft from St. Louis, MO
Like many reviewers below me, I tried the antenna with the 5 foot cable that came with the unit and I didn't see much improvement over what I was getting before installing the unit. Then I read down a little further and tried what a few people suggested. That was to attached the antenna directly to the router. That worked really well. I went from 1 bar at the furtest point in my house to 3 bars. It wasn't expensive and it did what was intended. So I'm satisfied. Was this review helpful?
