Culled from sessions in the late 1940s and early '50s, CUANDO SUENAN LOS TAMBORES is classic New York mambo, driven by Puente's incessant timbales and sure-fire conducting. Simmering sheets of polyrhythm--generated by bongos, congas, timbales, and bass--unfurl through each of the 15 tracks, punctuated by horns and vocal refrains. There are smooth, shuffling ballads here and there ("Legrimas Negras"), but for the most part the fare is bright, jubilant, and infectiously danceable. Even the band's version of "Take the 'A' Train" gets an accelerated, Latinate treatment. Strong arrangements, superb playing, and monster grooves in the old-school mambo mode make this compilation a keeper.
