| Author Bio| Deepak Chopra | | Deepak Chopra, one of the world's foremost proponents of ayurvedic medicine, has made the alternative health movement popular across America. Through his books, tapes, and appearances, he has become a trusted source of information on health and wellness. Raised in New Delhi, India--the son of a cardiologist--Deepak attended Catholic schools and, in 1968, graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Coming to the U.S. as a young man, he taught at Tufts University and Boston University Schools of Medicine, became chief of staff at New England Memorial Hospital, and served as director of the Institute for Mind/Body Medicine and Human Potential at Sharp Health Care in San Diego. During this time, he practiced Western medicine and lived a lifestyle that was somewhat unhealthy by his later standards, but, in the 1980s, he was introduced to ayurvedic principles and began to incorporate them into his life. He also studied Transcendental Meditation: one of his influences was Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. His first book was published in 1985. In 1988, he published THE RETURN OF THE RISHI, his account of his life and his journey to ayurveda. Appearances on Donahue and Oprah gained him a national audience, beyond the New Age and self-help markets; in bookstores, his books are shelved in both the health and self-help sections. Several of them, including AGELESS BODY, TIMELESS MIND, and THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS have been huge best sellers. In 1999, Time magazine listed Chopra in its top 100 icons of the 20th century. He founded the Chopra Center for Well-Being in California, and is its CEO. Chopra has also written novels, including THE DEATH OF MERLIN, which originated from his many visits to Cornwall, in England, and SOULMATE, a romance with a spiritual theme, set in New York City. |
