"Caroline discovered the door a little while after they moved into the house..." (from the first line)

When Coraline steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own (only better), things seem marvelous.

But there's another mother there, and another father, and they want her to stay and be their little girl. They want to "change her and never let her go.

Coraline will have to fight with all her wits and courage if she is to save herself and return to her ordinary life.

Annotation:
After moving into a new house with her family, a girl named Coraline discovers a mysterious world hidden behind a locked door. That world echoes Coraline's real life--right down to a woman who claims to be her mother-- but everything in it is somehow off and creepy. When Coraline returns to her own dimension, she is horrified to discover that her parents have been taken prisoner in the parallel world. Determined to rescue her parents, Coraline resolves to battle the evil that lives on the other side of her door. Named one of the Best Children's Books 2002 by Publishers Weekly.

Praise
Kirkus
"A magnificently creepy fantasy....Not for the faint-hearted--who are mostly adults anyway--but for the stouthearted kids who love a brush with the sinister. CORALINE is spot on." 06/15/2002

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Gaiman's pacing is superb, and he steers the tension of the tale with a deft and practiced narrative touch. McKean's black-and-white illustrations depict first sunny and then eerie scenes in an old-fashioned style with spidery and elongated lines. Although this is not for the faint of heart, readers who have long coveted a horror story that would play to their most vivid fears will find the unforgettable 'other mother' to be the perfect terrifying villain." - Kate McDowell November 2002

Chapter One

Fairy Tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten
- G.K. Chesterton.

Coraline discovered the door a little while after they moved into the house.

It was a very old house - it had an attic under the roof and a cellar under the ground and an overgrown garden with huge old trees in it.

Coraline's family didn't own all of the house, it was too big for that. Instead they owned part of it.

There were other people who lived in the old house.

Miss Spink and Miss Forcible lived in the flat below Coraline's, on the ground floor. They were both old and round, and they lived in their flat with a number of ageing highland terriers who had names like Hamish and Andrew and Jock. Once upon a time Miss Spink and Miss Forcible had been actresses, as Miss Spink told Coraline the first

5 of 5 Great Book Friday, February 27, 2009
GuardianGnome from Marshfield, WI

I bought this book simply because I saw the previews for the movie; it looked appealing. I decided to read the book then go see the movie. Just to simply state, Neil Gaiman is one of the best authors. I have read a couple other novels of his and they are all immersive because of the details (characters,worlds...) and connection with the characters he creates. Coraline is a book for any age,and there is nothing like it. You begin picturing the world from the start, and the picture only grows.
