 Editor's Note
COP LAND: In the idyllic bedroom community of Garrison, New Jersey, a community of NYPD officers takes refuge away from the big city's troubles while still enjoying all the kickbacks, cover-ups, and mob-owned banking privileges from across the river. But the code of silence is tested when an off-duty, drunk rookie cop from their ranks wrongfully kills two black men and the local sheriff begins to investigate. COP LAND is an ambitious ensemble drama notable for eliciting a strong performance (and a 40-lb weight gain) from Sylvester Stallone. JUDGE DREDD: It is the 22nd century, and Mega City One (formerly known as New York City), replete with flying vehicles, armored lawmen, and 65 million citizens, has become a violent and anarchic land. As a result, the law enforcement consists of men known as judges, and each one serves as cop, judge, and occasionally executioner, allowed to mete out "justice" as he sees fit. The most elite and feared of these is the emotionless, snarling Judge Dredd (Sylvester Stallone). But when Dredd's clever, vile, vengeful archenemy Rico escapes from prison, he successfully frames Dredd for murder. With the judge, who has received a life sentence, out of his way, Rico begins a killing spree with judges as his special targets. But when Dredd escapes from prison and sets out to stop the deranged psycho, will a startling familial revelation about Rico affect his progress?

| | Professional Reviews | ReelViews 8 of 10 [Cop] While this is probably the actor's best turn since Rocky, and he does a credible job that may earn him the opportunity to do more "serious" work in the future, Stallone's performance is outshone on all sides. That's not a knock against him; it's an acknowledgment that the supporting cast is about the best that it can be. Although Keitel's one-dimensional, over-the-top portrayal isn't all that impressive, both Ray Liotta and Robert DeNiro manage to craft well-developed, interesting characters. In smaller roles, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, and Anabella Sciorra are equally impressive...In addition to the high caliber of acting, another thing that sets Copland apart from an average entry into the genre is Mangold's dialogue, which sparkles with intelligence. The director may not have Tarantino's gift for words, but his characters speak reasonably, not like they're reading from a sheet of paper. Even the supporting players, like Janeane Garofalo's officer Cindy Betts, say and do things in a believable manner. As I indicated, the overall story has problems, but Mangold is a master of the moment, and he gets us to care about the characters enough that we don't spend one-hundred minutes obsessing over flaws. As a result, Copland is a compelling, if imperfect, motion picture. - James Berardinelli Chicago Sun-Times 6 of 10 [Judge] Dredd is played by Sylvester Stallone, who is ideal for a role like this because he's smart and funny enough to pull it off. The screenplay gives him little help, however, with a love interest (Diane Lane) who never really connects, a comic sidekick named Fergie (Rob Schneider) who seems badly out of tune, and a tag line ("I knew you'd say that") that doesn't exactly rank with "Make my day" or even "I'll be back." The special effects are messy and cluttered, but atmospheric; they show us a Megacity that looks like a cross between the cities in "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall," with buildings towering into the sky and gangs rumbling in the streets and helpful neon signs that say things like "Store"..."Judge Dredd" never slows down enough to make much sense; it's a "Blade Runner" for audiences with Attention Deficit Disorder...Stallone survives it, but his supporting cast, also including an uninvolved Joan Chen and a tremendously intense Jurgen Prochnow, isn't well used. Only Assante, as the rogue Judge who frames his brother, holds up under the material, although the movie doesn't exploit the brother angle, maybe because that would have involved dialogue of more than one sentence at a time. - Roger Ebert
