1 of 5 Junk at any price. Wednesday, June 04, 2008 George from Birmingham, AL
I bought this in early February. I use it for 4 months with an Asus P5W DH motherboard I put together. Then I'm using the computer last week and there is whiff of burning electronics and a screech from the speakers and the computer goes into dead mode.
I double check everything and the PS is very hot. I took everything apart, can't find anything obvious that went bad. I wait for stuff to cool off and with my fingers crossed, I power it up. It powers up! But theres seems to be no ventilation through the "CoolMax". The power supply cooling fan has failed after just under 4 months of use.
Whats this >100,000 MTBF hogwash? Even if I had run it continuously, this is failure before 2800 hours.
Don't buy this thing. It's junk.

3 of 5 Not what I expected. Sunday, March 02, 2008 joe2935 from oceanside NY
I bought a power supply on line last month from you. I was surpised that a 500Watt unit, would sell for so little. It was not as expected. Major problem, there were not enough power sockets, as the one it replaced, and the ones that were attached were not long emough to supply hard drives. I had to purchase adapters and extenstions. Not the value as advertised, sorry. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 GREAT!! Thursday, November 08, 2007 Tina from Jackson, TN
I bought this because I needed a new power supply to go with my new motherboard. It was ALOT cheaper than many other places and it is working great! I have not had a single problem with it. Will be ordering another one for my husbands comp. It is very quiet I freaked out when I realized it was working and was so quiet. I was used to my old loud one. Definently reccomend it! Also I did the free shipping and actually got it in within 2 days! Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Effectively DOA - but the Rebate die arrive :) Thursday, May 31, 2007 Pandesko from Joplin MO
Rebate arrived after several weeks in my SASE, so effective drive price was 0$.
PSU supplies enough power to light the motherboard, green, power LED, and provide enough video signal to produce a blank monitor- image. The PSU internal Fan would not come on.
Manufacturer web-sight FAQ offerred no troubleshooting guidelines for conditions. However, it did show the 3 RPM settings at which their 120mm fans operate, indicating it should at least be spinning at the lowest speed.
Would not boot system using an ASUS P5LD2 R2.0 mobo/ 2Gb DDR2-667 RAM, Intel E4300 Core 2 Duo proc/ Gf6200 PCIe video/ 160Gb SATA drive.
Read N**Egg reviews to find PSU model is prone to problems. Checked A**Technica, Recommended Systems guides, which recommended alternate brand.
If the fan is actually functional, perhaps it will work as an additional case-fan (some disassembly & modification required.) Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Value Friday, May 25, 2007 A Customer from Pittsburgh, PA
I bought two of these. One was to use for a CISCO computer repair class I teach at a local high school and the other was for a backup at home.
The fan is a bit louder than I'd like, but it's not a deal-breaker.
The supply is of good quality and has the SATA and video card connectors many new configurations require.
We used the one at school to test several motherboards and as a replacement in a couple of systems we suspected had bad power supplies.
At the end of the year I sold the one from school to one of my CISCO students for his machine at home. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A deal for the cost Friday, May 25, 2007 A Customer from LaBelle, FL
Seems to be a good deal for the cost. I bought this one for a backup just in case...Quality is OK. Not any more noisy than expected for this price range. Was this review helpful?

This is more a review of the Coolmax company and the way that they handle rebates, than the power supply. When I contacted them by email to discuss why the the rebate had been denied this was there response.
"Please see the attachment for the proof which you didn't circle the date on the invoice. Thank you for your understanding!
[They attached a pdf copy of my receipt.]
Best Regards,
Coolmax Rebate"

Don't buy this product. They don't give the rebate you too. I supposedly did not encircle the date on the receipt so they denied my rebate. Has anyone every heard of anything like that? No reputable company in the US would do such a thing. Their rebate form also does not say anything about being disqualified for not encircling the date. In addition, forget about calling them, they do not have a phone number and also they don't reply to your emails until you curse at them. Was this review helpful?

power unit is an upgrade for a stock 300 watt power supply. A little noisey when a load is put on it. Forget the rebate it will be denied. Coolmax is not fair with their evaluation of rebate materials. I will never buy anything from coolmax again. Hope they are happy. Buy.com did a great job once again, Thanks Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 1 of 5 It sucks..........Loud! Wednesday, May 02, 2007 A Customer from toledo, oh
This sucker is even louder than the one it replaced! I am just too lazy to take it out and ship it back to buy.com. I had to drill new holes to get it to fit and I am not about to mess with that again.
Misleading advertisement on Buy.com and manufacturer's part. Bad business. Was this review helpful?

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Does the job but is NOT "Silent". Tuesday, February 27, 2007 A Customer from Chattanooga, Tennessee
It seems to be fashionable now days to put in the ad for a computer power supply that it has a silent fan (or is noiseless) as was the case with the Coolmax model V-500 ad. This is not a noiseless power supply and it does not have a silent fan! True it is not as loud as some power supplies that I have had, but it was twice as loud as the one that I had in the computer before it (Power-up Brand). One of the problems is that it does not have a switchable (or temperature controlled) fan. It is either on high speed or off. So don't get this power supply expecting to not hear any noise. Second, it did not have enough 12v power connections for my drives and I had to use a 12-v splitter to compensate.
So far (after one day of use) it seems to be performing the task of providing regulated power very well and stays cool to the touch so the fan is doing its job. My system temperature runs about 32 C which is about 2 degrees better than before. I bought this power supply because of the great rebate it had and it did come in handy when the PowerUp power supply failed in a blaze of sparks and smoke. I did order another power supply to replace this one because this computer is part of my entertainment system and I just don't want to listen to computer noise while watching a movie or listening to music. This powersupply is great. Its so simple to install.....and now its in and it runs great. Its very quiet and works like a charm. I was skeptical of the price but Im glad i got it. Big thanks to Buy.com and Coolmax for hooking me up. Just pay attention when you hook it up. I assume most problems are installer error. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Quiet, but certainly not Silent Monday, February 12, 2007 A Customer from Lowell, MA
Can't beat $28 with a $28 rebate! Works fine so far (2 days) but I have to say the title is misleading. This is *NOT* a silent power supply as I was lead to believe; "Quiet" would better fit it. I also felt the cables were a bit short - the 24pin motherboard connector just barely reached, and the connector was near the p/s. I am replacing a 330w Seasonic P/S which is truely silent .. I'll will buy another as I need the 500w, and keep this CoolMax as a hot spare. Was this review helpful?
2 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Not bad but... Friday, February 09, 2007 A Customer from Harrisburg, PA
I got this product free after rebate so if I get the rebate it will not have cost me much.
When I opened the box and removed the power supply, there was something rattling around inside so I had to open up the case and remove some pieces of hard plasic adhesive that was loose. This adhesive was used to mount some components to the circuit board and some of it had come loose.
I installed the PS and it seems to work fine, however.
The rebate is a pain because you have to register online to get a special code to include on the form. Also, they want the serial number which is a small sticker on the PS unit itself that you have to peel off carefully to avoid tearing. This is also the first rebate where I had to include a self addressed stamped envelope. They want the invoice also but buy.com only gives you a packing slip in the box.
