 Editor's Note
Devoted astronomer Dr. Ellie Arroway undertakes an emotional and spiritual journey after receiving the message she's waited for all her life--a mysterious signal beamed in from alien beings, who pass along instructions for building and piloting a craft that will presumably survive the passage from Earth to their home. While struggling to fund her mission, Arroway also struggles with her feelings about the nature of things, particularly after meeting a charismatic New Age believer who questions her disbelief in God. A deliberately-paced, meditative adaptation of the eponymous novel by Ann Druyan and "pop" astronomer Carl Sagan, who died during production.

Superb show that asks those questions and touches on ethical issues in our lives. It is one of those movies you gotta watch several times. The show is for the people who like Sci-fi. Was this review helpful?

I didn't think I would like it, but it quickly became one of my all time favorites. I think that the adaptation of the book and the direction of Zemekis were excellent, and after reading the book, I believe the changes were improvements (for the movie at least). The book I felt was a bit more tedious than it had to be. But it was perhaps a bit more realistic, especially from the mid 80's viewpoint. I will admit that there is a tiny bit of difficulty with the Joss character as portrayed in the movie, but he was a complex combination of at least two other characters from the book. If you bought the fact that he could exist, then I think the beauty of the movie comes through. I will watch Contact many times and marvel each time at the fine details that make this such a fine film. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The Book was Great, the Movie Very Good Monday, July 19, 1999 MELVIN BRENNAN from Burlington Twp., NJ
Jodie Foster lends tremendous credibility to this Robert Zemeckis-directed adaptation of the novel by Carl Sagan. I found the book, which I read after seeing the movie, to be a much more compelling and ambitious storyline, but the themes toward which both the movie and book strive are worthily presented. I reccomend 'CONTACT' to anyone who is a fan of the 'Orson Scott Card' school of science fiction - ethical dillemas in a decidely different backdrop. Was this review helpful?

Contact is one of those movies which makes the viewer think. If you like a movie were all the pieces fit together only to leave you with another puzzle at the end, this movie is for you. Not only is the movie great, but the analog audio tracks (DVD) are great for a look behind the scenes. A must have for your collection. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Contact gets a thumbs up! Wednesday, June 09, 1999 Sean from Jacksonville, FL
This movie takes on many topics: religion, alien existence, and government corruption just to name a few. A wonderful acting job by John Hurt, but Matthew McConaughey gets to be pretty annoying. THEME: Mankind must keep searching for answers instead of stagnating in dated and unsubstantiated beliefs. PLOT: A scientist discovers the existence of alien intelligence but has a hard time convincing others to support her in her findings. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Motion Picture Event Tuesday, June 01, 1999 A Viewer from Portland, OR
Great performances and a strong plot help this quasi-sci-fi/romance into the realm of near perfection. Those seeking big thrills look elsewhere. Those looking for interesting characters and some nice special effects will enjoy it! One of the greatest m Was this review helpful?
