A captivating, insiderUs guide to the politics and personalities that will have a tremendous impact on one of the worldUs most secretive and important events--the election of a pope to succeed John Paul II.

Annotation:
Published in 2002 as the world saw signs that the dynamic papacy of John Paul II might be drawing to a close due to his declining health, this report on the selection process and issues confronting the next pope is by a correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. In CONCLAVE, John L. Allen presents an overview of the history of the papacy, and pays special attention to the recent popes of the 20th century all of whom defined the job differently, leaving their own unique stamp, yet also offering somewhat differing paths for the next pontiff. Allen provides a thorough account of the various issues confronting the next pope, both within the church itself and in the world: church governance, priests and celibacy, birth-control, recruiting new priests, AIDS, the American church, and ministering to a flock of one billion. But above all perhaps is the general issue of the challenge posed by tradition and change. ||The title CONCLAVE refers to the secret deliberations by which a new pope is selected, a process which fascinates the world at large, and for which Allen presents an informed yet accessible explanation. Allen speculates on the chances of several leading candidates, providing capsule biographies of most of the cardinals, including Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was the subject of a full scale biography by Allen. In 2005, Cardinal Ratzinger was selected to succed John Paul II, and he assumed the name Pope Benedict XVI.

What Does the Pope Do?

To understand why the election of a pope is important, we first need to grasp what the pope does. Unfortunately, there is no job description for the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Lots of titles go with the job, but they are of little immediate help: supreme pontiff (pontifex maximus), servant of the servants of God, vicar of Christ, successor of Peter, bishop of Rome, patriarch of the West. Catholics sometimes say the pope steps into "the shoes of the fisherman," meaning that he follows Saint Peter, who was a fisherman before being called by Jesus Christ to lead the church. That phrase, unfortunately, is more metaphorical than informative. A twentieth-century way to describe the pope might be to say that he is the legal and spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Church, at 1 billion members the largest Christian denomination in the world, and certainly the most vertically integra
