"It is difficult to speak of the timeless beauty and richness of the present moment when things are moving so fast..." (from the first line)

From the Publisher:
From the bestselling author and renowned mindfulness teacher, scientist, and educator. . .a guide to living a meaningful life.

This follow-up to the widely praised national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are is yet another revolutionary offering from Jon Kabat-Zinn, showing readers how the power of mindfulness can bring radical change to their lives.

In the national bestseller Wherever You Go, There You Are, Jon Kabat-Zinn struck a chord in contemporary society that continues to reverberate to this day. It has been embraced by politicians, business leaders, and celebrities and endures as a classic with readers. In his groundbreaking new book, Dr. Kabat-Zinn teaches us how to harness the power of mindfulness to effect profound change in our personal lives and in the world.

As stress continues to exact a toll on everyday life, people are increasingly turning to ancient, meditative methods, which have been tested by science, to relieve the ill effects and become more focused, healthy, and proactive. Kabat-Zinn has been for decades at the forefront of this mind/body movement and the revolution in medicine and health care it has spawned, demystifying it and bringing it into the mainstream. In Coming to Our Senses, he shares how every human has the capacity to mobilize deep, innate resources for continual learning, growing, healing, and transformation through mindfulness.

Woven into eight parts, Coming to Our Senses uses anecdotes and stories from Kabat-Zinn's own life experiences and work in his clinic to illustrate healing possibilities. At its core, the book offers remarkable insight into how to use the five senses — touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell, plus awareness itself — as a path to a healthier, saner, and more meaningful life.

This is the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness, health, and our physical and spiritual well-being.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. is the founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, as well as Professor of Medicine emeritus. He leads workshops on stress reduction and mindfulness for doctors and other health professionals and for lay audiences worldwide. He is the bestselling author of Wherever You Go, There You Are and Full Catastrophe Living, and, with his wife Myla Kabat-Zinn, Everyday Blessings, a book on mindful parenting. With Dr. Andrew Weil he created the CD program Meditation for Optimum Health. He was featured in the PBS series Healing and the Mind with Bill Moyers, as well as on Oprah. He lives in Massachusetts.

Annotation:
COMING TO OUR SENSES is a major statement from Jon Kabat-Zinn, who draws on his years of experience in mind-body medicine and his studies of Eastern thought to addresses timely concerns of the 21st century. Saying that we appear to suffer from what he calls an autoimmune "dis-ease" and a collective ADD, Kabat-Zinn exhorts us to become more awake and more aware, or, in his words, "more fully human," through mindfulness, a practice which allows us to "live in the moment." As the title suggests, Kabat-Zinn explains that we first need to become more aware of, and in touch with, our senses--sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. He presents a thorough explanation of meditation, its practice and purpose. He also addresses busy behaviors, such as our attention to cell phones and email which are symptoms of our "continual partial attention." Full attention is the remedy here. Kabat-Zinn extends his mind-body healing approach to the political realm, making specific reference to 9/11, the War In Iraq, global warming, and other newsworthy topics. He says that mindfulness can clear our heads so we might make good decisions, and that mindfulness and democracy can go hand in hand. Each chapter, or lesson, in this long and dense book includes selections from poets such as Rumi, Kabir, Derek Walcott, Mary Oliver, and other "intrepid explorers of what is so, and articulate guardians of the possible." Kabat-Zinn covers a lot of ground, and COMING TO OUR SENSES amounts to a virtual course in mindfulness. At some points an iconoclastic manifesto, this grand statement moves logically from the personal to the political. It is a wake up call that may be summed up as: Heal your body and mind, and the rest will follow!

"[A] passionate tour-de-force....Ardent, personal, frankly opinionated in places....It is a treasure-trove of contemporary wisdom." Starred review. 12/20/2004

Meditation Is Not for the Faint-Hearted

* * *

It is difficult to speak of the timeless beauty and richness of the present moment when things are moving so fast. But the faster things move, the more important it is for us to dip into or even inhabit the timeless. Otherwise, we can lose touch with dimensions of our humanity that make all the difference between happiness and misery, between wisdom and folly, between well-being and the erosive turmoil in the mind, in the body, and in the world that we will be referring to as "dis-ease." Because our discontent truly is a disease, even when it does not appear as such. Sometimes we colloquially refer to those kinds of feelings and conditions, to that "disease" we feel so much of the time, as "stress." It is usually painful. It weighs on us. And it always carries a feeling of underlying dissatisfaction.
