Notes & Personnel Info | | Recorded between 1967 & 1971. | | Though his career continued on afterwards, all of Harry Nilsson's hits occurred between 1967 and 1973. Prior to that time, he made inroads as a songwriter, with songs recorded by the Ronettes, the Monkees, and others. Ironically, his first hit was a cover of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'" and one of his biggest successes was his version of Badfinger's "Without Her." | | These 20 songs are organized in a way that favors engaging programming rather than strict chronology. "One" (which was a hit for Three Dog Night) rubs shoulders with "Coconut" (as in, "put the lime in the coconut"), while his most rousing number, "Jump Into the Fire," leads into the matter-of-factly plaintive "Without You" (which was also recorded by Al Kooper with Blood, Sweat & Tears). As a singer, he manages to wring greatly expressive range from a rather regular-sounding voice, which leads to much of his deserved appeal. This set is a good introduction to Harry Nilsson, as is the two-disc PERSONAL BEST. |
