Coby TFDVD1021 Portable DVD Player

I guess the old saying, "You get what you pay for." is true. Despite many negative reviews on Coby DVD players, I decided to buy this one. I thought that playing it smart by purchasing an additional SquareTrade warranty would prevent me from becoming another Coby statistic. Anyway, after owning this product for about a month, it started doing strange things. While I was away on a trip, my wife had trouble with it. The root menu would open fine but after making the selection, it would begin playing in fast forward mode with no sound. Nothing short of physically turning off the power would stop it as the player would not respond to any buttons. She tried all the basic troubleshooting steps such as powering the unit off and then back on, trying several different DVD discs, trying it with battery in or out, and fiddling with the menus and buttons. None of these steps solved the problem. She abandoned it and used a laptop temporarily. When I got home, I attempted to troubleshoot it and found it to be in working order. It has done this several times since with various playback problems such as a distorted screen or black "window" on the screen. On a side note, the product generally has a "cheap" feel to it. The plastic isn't very high quality and the buttons and switches feel like they'll break easily over time. I also don't like the manual volume control but I knew that going in and since you usually watch it close up it's not too bad. I do like the larger screen and that it includes A LOT of accessories that you usually have to buy separately, such as a cassette adapter and a headrest mount. I haven't tried the warranty yet. I'd rather just be rid of the thing and get something else but I guess I'm stuck with a Coby product after all unless I want to take a loss.
