For a band of unconscionable stoners, the Kottonmouth Kings sure had a serious work ethic, releasing a veritable torrent of pot puns and--ahem--dope beats in the early 2000s. CLOUD NINE, released in 2007, marked the band's 12th (!) outing of the decade. The self-described pioneers of "rip-hop"--that is, their bong-inspired, SoCal-punk and hip-hop hybrid--delivered arguably their most sonically advanced long-player with CLOUD NINE, which features 20 tracks of slinky grooves, headphone candy, and tattooed attitude. The collection also includes a backstage-centric DVD and high-profile collaborations with Cypress Hill, Insane Clown Posse, and Tech Nine--a veritable stoner-rap dream team. What differentiates the Kottonmouth Kings' Cloud Nine from the rest of their huge discography isn't the subject matter -- it's still weed, rebellion, weed, and weed -- but the general feeling that about a quarter of the songs here are more influenced by the Cali alt-rock of Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth than ICP, even though the evil clowns do show up for the "blaze your own trails" anthem "Think 4 Yourself." There are still those punk numbers that sound like the Beastie Boys if they never grew up and some good, hard-hitting hip-hop, like when guest Tech N9ne shines all over "City 2 City," but "One Day" is a surprisingly bright and dreamy number that perfectly suits a bunch of punkish stoners growing old. The reggae light of "Pass It Around" would play fine at any all-inclusive resort, and the laid-back "Proud to Be a Stoner" sounds like it was found stuck between the seats of a 1972 hippie van. If there's any reason to worry about this mellowing, it's that sometimes the production sounds too button-up for the punk and rock-rap numbers, although "Loadies" gets it just right thanks to some gutsy fuzz guitar. But that hasn't stopped them from becoming celebrated performers with crowds who grew up on the psychedelic stoner haze of rap groups like Cypress Hill. In their decade-plus of making records and advocating marijuana, they've been named HIGH TIMES' Band Of The Year, toured with the likes of D12, and even started their own label, Suburban Noize, which has released all their albums as of the mid-2000s, as well as efforts by such luminaries as Cypress Hill's Sen Dog.
