If you're in the market for what The Detroit News called "a lively comic adventure," Clerks delivers with wholesale hilarity! It's one wild day in the life of a pair of overworked counter-jockeys whose razor-sharp wit and on-the-job antics give a whole new meaning to customer service! Even while braving a nonstop parade of unpredictable shoppers, the clerks manage to play hockey on the roof, visit a funeral home, and straighten out their offbeat love lives. The boss is nowhere in sight, so you can bet anything can - and will - happen when these guys are left to run the store!

Editor's Note

Chronicling a day in the life of Quick Stop clerk Dante Hicks, CLERKS captures the hilarity of the humdrum even as it raises slackerdom to existential proportions. From behind his counter, Dante desperately tries to exert some power over the crazy customers, his own love life, and his incorrigible friend and fellow clerk Randal--the type who sees nothing wrong in closing the video shop he works in to go rent movies from a better store.

Plot Summary

Made for less than the cost of an SUV, Kevin Smith's first film finds 22-year-old Quick Stop clerk Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) called into work on his precious day off. There he is besieged by customers ranging from the agitated to the insane, not to mention Randal (Jeff Anderson), the clerk from the video store next door whose commitment to service is made clear when he observes, "This job would be great if it wasn't for the f@&%!#* customers." Dante's love life is a shambles, and the situation at the store goes from bad to worse, but he and Randal are never so beleaguered that they can't find time to discuss why the destruction of the Death Star in RETURN OF THE JEDI may have been morally dubious (uninvolved contractors were probably aboard). In fact, it was the clerks' clever dialogue, saturated with pop-culture references, that elevated CLERKS to cult-hit status among Generation-Xers and transformed Kevin Smith from film school dropout to indie auteur. Smith himself plays Silent Bob, while Jason Mewes plays Jay, his drug-dealing other half. Together the duo provide added comic relief, continuity, and wisdom in each of the the director's films.

5 of 5 Clerks: The one that started it all Wednesday, October 10, 2001
scohen2002 from Chicago, IL
Clerks is the first movie of acclaimed actor/director Kevin Smith's New Jersey Chronicles. Clers was made in 1994 in black and white with only $29,575 dollars, (half of Blair Witch Project's $60,000). This movie is about one crazy day in the lives of two convience store clerks: Dante (Brain O' Halleran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson). Dante is called into work on his day off, and the day just gets worse from there on. Dante takes his crappy job seriously, and tries to play it up as this big responsibility. His friend Randal, however, feels the exact opposite. He's a slacker along with, but to a much greater extent. He loves to leave RST Video where he works when he's supposed to be on duty to visit Dante, and they have some of the most interesting conversations you have ever heard. Whether watching hermaphroditic porn, or knocking over a casket at a funeral. Selling 4 year old's ciggarettes, masterbating to death, or having sex with a dead guy, something is always going on at Quick Stop Groceries. This movie is a hilarious must see for anyone who wants to laugh. Go out and see the Indie success that ruled the '94 Sundance Film Festival, the film siskel and ebert gave 2 thumbs up, the film that got Kevin out of Quickstop and into the movies. Go watch this movie. Watch it right now.

5 of 5 Walt Flannagan Rules! Friday, January 14, 2000
angeldivadevil from Los Angeles, CA
I've seen Clerks a dozen times and it amazes me that I still laugh like it was my first tine seeing it. It has a way of imparting everyday truths. The cast is made up of unexperienced actors and this is a triumph in independent filmmaking. Kevin Smith is a master of dialogue and his talent is unsurpassed. Mallrats and Chasing Amy go on to prove his talent.

4 of 5 I don't think it lived up to the hype. Tuesday, August 03, 1999
Snowman from Ocean Springs MS
I don't know why I didn't think this movie was groundbreakingly funny. Yes it had a few good one liners (many actually) but I think it's cauz I know people like this and I guess I'm used to it. (From MN)Some parts were hilarious though and the bathroom incident was great towards the end. Some parts were just plain dumb. The DVD does have excellent extras though. Kudos.

4 of 5 A cult classic! Tuesday, July 20, 1999
Johnathan Braskley from Austin, Tx
Kevin Smith taps a hard line into an ingenious comedy. The acting sometimes flubs the dialogue, but it is overall such a raw piece of work that it comes off great.

5 of 5 How life in a convenience store should be. Friday, June 25, 1999
mallrat51 from London, England
Well, having owned Clerks on video for some time now, all i can say is WOW! This film just demands being watched. It just oozes comedy at a tone of voice that everyone will be able to tap into. Some may find the film hard to follow due to the Black & White filming and slighty jerky, hand held feel, but to the others who want, and crave decent films won't be dissapointed. Any slight mistakes, or sketchy camera work adds to the realism of the film. Just how bad can a job as a sales clerk be? Well, the full glory of the situation is brought to you in a way no one has done so before. It will leave you with a completely different view of your local sales clerk. Watch this film, let it take you on it's journey, and enjoy the best independent film for years.

5 of 5 So funny it will make you wet yourself-no kidding! Tuesday, June 22, 1999
jbvdesign from Clearwater, FL
If you can get passed some weak acting and Black and White filming, you will see one of the funniest movies ever created. Kevin Smith's first film was a perfect introduction into his mind. From rude one-liners, to creative slacker humor this movie will keep you laughing all night long.
