| | | Annotation: A monumentally virtuous young woman is attracted to a dashing young man who is, unfortunately, a wolf in sheep's clothing. Told in letters--Richardson's invariable form--it is, like PAMELA, a morality tale as well as a highly entertaining novel, among the first of the great English "psychological" novels.
| Author Bio| Samuel Richardson | | Richardson's parents apprenticed him to a printer in London with a flourishing firm, and he rose in the trade, marrying the boss's daughter and inheriting the business. Except for a brief period in his youth when he wrote love letters for the young women of his town, Richardson didn't begin to write until he was 50; his first novel, PAMELA, OR VIRTUE REWARDED, is in letter form--the first epistolary novel. PAMELA, an extremely popular work, began the vogue for the "novel of sensibility," combining realistic plotting with psychological analysis. Richardson wrote only three novels, but continued as a prosperous businessman and was appointed "law printer to the King" a few years before he died. |
