Product Guides

The Cisco® RV042 Dual WAN VPN Router is an advanced connection-sharing network solution for your small business needs. Like any router, it lets multiple computers in your office share a connection to a public or private network. However, with dual WAN ports, the Cisco RV042 lets you use a second connection as a backup to help you stay connected, or it can be used to access a second provider to increase available bandwidth and balance traffic.

The Cisco RV042 also features a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Ethernet switch to connect four PCs directly, or you can connect more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need.

The VPN capability creates encrypted "tunnels" through the Internet, based on IP Security (IPsec) or Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), allowing up to 50 remote offices or traveling users to securely connect into your office network from offsite. Users connecting through a VPN tunnel are attached to your company's network -- with secure access to files, email, and your intranet -- just as if they were in the building. You can also use the VPN capability to allow users on your small office network to securely connect to a corporate network.

The Cisco RV042 can serve as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server and has a powerful stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It also supports the Trend Micro ProtectLink Gateway Security Service, which enables you to dynamically block unwanted or unsafe URLs and emails. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

As the heart of your small office network, the connection-redundant Cisco RV042 Dual WAN VPN Router gives you the connection reliability your business needs.

4 of 5 Dual WAN GREAT! VPN Bad :( Tuesday, January 01, 2008
A Customer from Wilber, NE

I originally bought this router for the dual WAN feature. I was able to use cable and DSL. Pretty much plug in and go. There are many other features on this router that don't even compare to the SOHO routers most home users have. I have been messing around with the QuickVPN, but have not got it to go. I have gotten the PPTP vpn server up and was able to connect. Hopefully they'll come out with some firmware to correct the VPN as I have searched online and many people are having issues with it. But like I said, I mainly bought it for the dual wan connectivity.

5 of 5 Does the job Wednesday, April 11, 2007
Rob Gundling from Lake Mary, FL
The RV042 does a good job of being a reliable Dual WAN router. You can setup certain ports to be bound to specific connections if you so choose (which is nice). The quickly obvious weaknesses are not that bad: crummy reporting and email notifications (they are worthless, really) and your dual wan choices are not explained very well... it's almost too simple. All you need to know is that the default "Smart Setting" both load balances and sets itself up for wan redundancy. There's nothing that explains this... it just does it. Been in operation at a clients site for 2 weeks now with no problems, so I'm happy.

5 of 5 Good Product Friday, February 09, 2007
A Customer from Oakland Gardens, New York
It is easy to install, maintenance and update firmware. It has dual WAN interfaces, which allows you to have 2 different DSL/Cable providers to set one as standby. Or you can set one WAN port as DMZ port. It supports NAT multiple public Static IPs to multiple private Static IPs. This is very helpful if your ISP gives you more than 1 static IP. It is easy to get old router configuration to the new router, by just import its old router's backup file. All settings will remain as what as the old router did. I ordered this to replace my old same router, which was out of order after 2 year service. Now its price is cheap too at buy.com. It is a good router for a small and medium size business or residential network application.

5 of 5 Great VPN Head with some VPN Knowledge Wednesday, December 27, 2006
oj.utter from Columbus, NE
This is a great VPN router with the ability to have 50+ VPN connecdtions. The setup between this router and another Linksys router was a little difficult due to different terminology between the 2 but after it was completed it worked great. We are connected to linksys and sonicwall end point routers and also are using PPTP software VPN connections. Overall value of this router for price and it ability is well worth the difficultly in the inital setup. If you have experience with VPN setup then this will be a breeze.

5 of 5 Great VPN ability Wednesday, September 01, 2004
GLS from Cleveland Ohio
We bought 2 of these based upon a Linksys tech recommendation for a hardware VPN and firewall combination. We use them to share files between my SOHO and corporate office. Being my first VPN install, it took a while of reading and trying but after figuring out the correct IP numbers, they work 100% as expected. A very nice feature is the more "pro" look interface and very detailed logging ability. IMO: these are a step up from the standard blue cased Linksys components you normally see. All steel cases, more detailed menu options, beefier powersupply, etc. Overall, I give this router and strong A grade. Had the documentation and help files been more detailed, it would get a full A+. BTW: my only stumbling point was in finally figuring out (tollfree call to techsupport) that the "shared access key" cannot contain any numbers, it's alpha only which the doc's forgot to mention.
