I'm on unit #3 now, first two went back on RMA. #1 worked OK but the remote was nearly useless. #2 the remote seemed to work better but the unit could not be powered on/off from the remote or the front panel button. #3, functions fine, still has the WORST remote I've seen in over 20 years. Why cripple a decent product with a poor remote system / module? Actually, I think there could be a design flaw re the remote system, noise or crosstalk? Depending on what state/mode the unit is in the remote performance seems to vary, as if noise is affecting the received signal. Kinda weird. Anyhow, using a Zenith (LG?) converter box to supply the HD video (720p) I've got a useable, affordable VCR substitute for HDTV. With of course much more capability built in. Most of which is frustrating to access since the remote performs so poorly. But at least unit #3 does function and turn on-off. Why does the HD keep running all the time, unless you rear panel power switch off? Seems like a waste of power and HD bearings, might be for "instant-on" capability or a firmware/design error? If the remote worked well I'd give this all 5s. (Don't think this is just the remote transmitter, it's the entire remote system/module.) Too bad, getting a nice product 95% right and crippling it with QC type issues. Was this review helpful?

Writer at the 1 TByte version mentioned the poor remote. Agreed, it's an awkward button arrangement, made worse by the fact that mine has a weak connection, poor range and very sensitive to angle and orientation with the "base" unit. Speaking of "base", three bladed "phillips" screws to attach the stand? Mine will go back to Buy.com (rma in hand) on Ciragos advice, re the bad remote performance. BUT that said, I like this thing. Here's how to make it a stand alone VCR replacement: Go to the gov't web site and get a card or two for your $40 DTV converter box. Then go to Sears and buy a ZENITH converter (DTT901?), this is THE one you want. Now you have a fine digital tuner for $10, with AV (rca) outputs to drive the CMC1000 with. This set up works fine, and I think the output on HDMI to my 46" HD TV looks fine, even if derived from plain old AV (non HD?) signal. The converter box runs $10 with coupon, so for under $200 you have a nice VCR replacement for DTV, with HDMI output.
Why doesn't the SD memory card click in like they always do? Wireless works but you'll have to set up passwords on your PC to make it happy (not just your wireless password).
Did they intend to (will eventually?) include a tuner in this product but got into trouble? Was this review helpful?
