Alastair Sim's tour-de-force performance as the ultimate miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, has almost single-handedly made this beloved version of Charles Dickens' story into one of the best-loved Christmas films of all time. Some of Britain's best filmmakers united behind Sim, who was joined by a delightful cast of accomplished and acclaimed English actors; creating what many today believe to be the best and most faithful production of Dickens's immortal tale. Cranky and curmudgeonly Scrooge learns the error of his unkind ways and is taught the true meaning of the holidays when he is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future.

"By far the most entertaining of all the movie versions."  Ed Hulse, Video Review
"...not only the gold standard against which all other holiday films should be measured, but also one of the greatest films ever made, period."  Entertainment Weekly
"Superb film is too good to be shown only at Christmastime...[a] faithful, heartwarming rendition of the Dickens classic."  Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide

...there have been many worthy takes on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. In 1984, George C. Scott humbugged to memorable effect in a made-for-TV adaptation. Albert Finney sang and danced his way through the title role of 1970's Scrooge. Even Mr. Magoo, the Muppets, Blackadder, and Mickey Mouse have taken their shots (with varying degrees of success). But the best-loved and most-remembered version of A Christmas Carol has to be the 1951 edition of Scrooge, with the inimitable Alastair Sim as London's cruelest miser...Like all uplifting Christmas stories, Scrooge ends with a flurry of good will and high spirits. But the chief pleasure of watching this version of A Christmas Carol is not the ending. At a reasonably short 85 minutes, this is nevertheless a complete experience, and the strength and depth of its drama makes it the most memorable of any adaptation of the tale. We may hum along with Albert Finney, hiss at Bill Murray, and smile at Scrooge McDuck, but none of them compares favorably to Sim. When it comes to A Christmas Carol, perhaps there isn't much of a question about the best version after all... - James Berardinelli

Of the half dozen or so filmed versions of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," this one from 1951 with Alastair Sim as Scrooge is the most faithful to the spirit of the book. Yes, this is THE Christmas classic. I first saw it when my father took me to a Moose Lodge Christmas party presentation in 1953, and I believe I have seen it every year since. The movie is a pleasure to watch, especially on DVD, a treat I hope to continue for a very long time...The all-British production was produced and directed by Brian Desmond Hurst ("Dangerous Moonlight," "Tom Brown's Schooldays"), and the music was composed by Richard Addinsell (whose most enduring composition was the "Warsaw Concerto"). This "Christmas Carol" is not a particularly extravagant production, to say the least, but it perfectly captures the flavor of Dickens' London, no doubt due to its being shot partly on location in very Dickens-like areas of the city..."A Christmas Carol" is a holiday tradition. If viewed back-to-back with "It's a Wonderful Life," also available on DVD, I guarantee there won't be a dry eye in the house. I could hardly recommend a film more highly. "And so, as Tiny Tim observed, 'God bless Us, Every One!'" - John J. Puccio

5 of 5 Excellent film and value Saturday, December 22, 2007
A Viewer from Knoxville, TN

This is a great value for your buck. Three films - one black & white, one colorized and an earlier telling of the story under the title of Scrooge (not the musicial). Great acting - best version of all the other retelling of this Dickens classic.
