Pop songstress Mandy Moore (A WALK TO REMEMBER) makes another big-screen splash with CHASING LIBERTY, a charming romantic comedy. Moore is Anna Foster (a.k.a. Liberty), daughter of the President of the United States, James Foster (Mark Harmon). Fed up with the overprotective secret service men that follow her around every second, Anna finally decides to cut loose. While on vacation in Europe she goes to a live performance of the hip-hop band The Roots and then escapes on a motorcycle with a cute photographer, Ben Calder (Matthew Goode). But what she doesn't realize is that Ben is actually a secret service agent himself who is under strict orders to act like a regular guy in order to provide the illusion that Anna is on her own for the first time in her life. As the pair journeys from Prague to Venice to the Love Parade festival in Berlin, Anna finds herself falling in love with Ben. At the same time, the agents on her trail (Jeremy Piven and Annabella Sciorra) find the same thing happening to them. Though the well-intentioned Ben does his best to keep Anna at a polite distance without crossing any romantic lines, it eventually becomes clear that he too is falling for her, complicating the situation. With CHASING LIBERTY, Moore once again proves her undeniably charismatic screen presence.

Chasing Liberty is a fairly standard-issue teen romantic comedy. Its primary intent is to follow the accepted rules, and what at first seems to be an intriguing premise turns into something more formulaic than some might hope. On the other hand, for those who like cute boy-meets-girl stories and are in the mood for some light, unpretentious romance, Chasing Liberty catches its prey. For what it is, it works...The film avoids the painful pitfall of putting Anna's life in danger. Moore and Goode generate just enough heat and the requisite number of sparks. The sex scenes are suitably tame and the only nudity is of Anna skinnydipping, from behind and in the dark (and not Moore at all - clearly a body-double). The script is laced with innuendo, but nothing is raunchy, and there's almost no profanity, making this friendly to younger teens. - James Berardinelli

On her latest CD, Mandy Moore sings covers of songs by the likes of Elton John, Cat Stevens and Joan Armatrading. In this movie, she's covering Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. She's not a princess, but, as eighteen-year-old Anna Foster, she's American royalty, a president's daughter who abdicates her duties as a good girl to go AWOL in Europe with Ben (Matthew Goode), a Brit stud. OK, Prague and Venice look great, but blandness falls over this movie like a steady snow. Start with Moore: What happened to the spark she had in The Princess Diaries? She teases stuffy Ben, argues with her dad the prez (Mark Harmon) and bungee-jumps Nall with a prim one-note prettiness. Director Andy Cadiff manages to suck the life out of such juicy actors as Jeremy Piven and Annabella Sciorra, who play flirtatious Secret Service agents. Chasing Liberty lacks the active verb it promises. It defines blah. - Peter Travers
