Barring that, one might guess that Kelly would go for an update more appropriate for a girl her age, say in the vein of Kittie. That's why it's a bit of a shock that what comes blaring out the speakers when SHUT UP hits the player is an immensely refreshing slab of straight up Stiff Records '81-style punk pop. Sounding like a ticked-off Go Go's, or the Jam if Paul Weller had preferred chasing skirts to debating the merits of socialism, Kelly Osborne mixes trashy guitar with some of most endearingly honest angry breakup lyrics since the heyday of Lesley Gore. In a bizarre teen-pop music landscape populated by overly sexualized Barbie dolls like Christina Aguilera and wiser-than-their-years phenoms like Avril Lavigne, perhaps it's only natural that the most genuine mouthpiece for the average suburban 2002 teenager is a filthy rich rock star's kid.
