The Wildcats found themselves competing for the 1978 NCAA championship. Led by Rupp's successor Joe B. Hall, the No. 1 ranked Wildcats looked to claim the school's 5th NCAA basketball championship as they took the floor in the 1978 Final Four in St. Louis. Beating Arkansas in the Semifinals the Wildcats were fueled by Jack "Goose" Givens and his 41 points as Kentucky edged Duke 94-88 to claim the 1978 NCAA trophy.
