Georgia finished the 1942 season as #2 and were #3 in 1946. Almost three and a half decades go by before Herschel Walker comes along and Georgia climbs all the way to the top of the heap. With Walker rushing for a NCAA freshman record 1,616 yards, the Bulldogs went undefeated, untied and clinched their first national title with a 17-10 victory over Notre Dame at the Sugar Bowl.
