 Editor's Note
Fernanda Montenegro's affecting performance, nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, is the centerpiece in this acclaimed Brazilian film. In the bustling heart of Rio de Janeiro, a young boy witnesses the accidental death of his mother. When a lonely, retired schoolteacher (Montenegro) reluctantly agrees to care for the boy, they begin a journey across the countryside on which they learn valuable lessons about each other and the human spirit.

The movie had so many wonderful qualities that the non-novel ideas presented in the plot were all but forgotten. For one, the main character reminds me of my mother in every way; really, she is 'the' Spanish/Portugese mother.
The depiction of the country was very true to reality, also. It relayed all the poverty and dispair in the countryside. But enough analysis, the movie contained wonderful actors and actresses and it was emotional to watch -- that is more than enough for me to enjoy a movie. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Superb Tuesday, August 31, 1999 alexandris_irina from Boca Raton, FL
This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Fernanda Montenegro should have won an Oscar for this one. The story is very human and realistic. I highly recommend it. Was this review helpful?
