| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Liner Note Author: Al Evers. | | Arrangers: Emer Kenny; Margaret Brennan; Steve Einhorn; Jerry Douglas ; Kate Power; Mary Black; Maura O'Connell; Cathie Ryan. | | Not to be confused with the popular vocal ensemble of the same name, the third installment in the CELTIC WOMAN compilation series presents a fine selection of Irish performers. Standout tracks include Mary Black's "The Holy Ground," a stirring ballad, and the serene "Theme from Harry's Game" by Maire Brennan and her beloved Celtic ensemble, Clannad. | | The third volume in the series essentially repeats the formula of the first two, with mostly Irish music performed by gentle female singers, several of them very well-known. It's hard to fault, since the performances are uniformly excellent, and the material is definitely time-tested and proven -- it's impossible to criticize songs like "The Star of County Down" and "Down by the Salley," for instance. And with singers like Mary Black, Cathie Ryan, and Maura O'Connell, you're not going to go wrong either. The problem, if it really is one, is that this disc never treads any new ground; indeed, it doesn't want to. It satisfies, and might send you in search of something deeper, but this is largely skimming the surface of the music. And does the world really need to hear the ubiquitous Clannad and "Harry's Game" yet again? The longer this series persists, the happier it appears to be to go for the familiar, which is a shame, since the first volume took some real chances. ~ Chris Nickson | | The third volume in the series essentially repeats the formula of the first two, with mostly Irish music performed by gentle female singers, several of them very well-known. | | Professional Reviews | | Dirty Linen (p.78) - "[E]very track is a fine one....Perhaps the most interesting juxtaposition here, melodically and in voices, is Cathie Ryan's 'Oro Mo Bahidin,' Maura O'Connell's ''Down by the Salley Gardens,' and Dolores Keane's 'Storm in My Heart' coming one right after the other."Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.47) - "[T]he 12 tracks do work well together, with McEvoy, Keane, and Power shining brightest among the stars." |
