2 of 5 Worked well for a while Friday, May 09, 2008 A Customer from Northern Virginia
The price was right and the performance was ok for system backups. One catch...you want you system backup to be usable. Disk crashed after about 4 months of use. Not much of a life span. Using a Seagate FreeAgent at work and home now. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A wonderful product Thursday, May 08, 2008 Ernie from Bethlehem, PA
I bought one last year and I have used it frequently near one year till now. I never met any problem. It is compact and doest not occupy much space on my desk, although it is not "baroque" as Seagate or WD. It is really a wonderful Data Storage. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Intermittent LED Monday, March 03, 2008 A Customer from Rowlett, TX
I've had this HD for about a year and use it for archival purposes. Recently the blue LED quit working. It has not affected the performance and sometimes the LED is on. It is a great price for a great product. Was this review helpful?

I have four of these drives now and no problems for over a year. I'm writing this to tell you that it is easy to format the drive as ext3 and attach it to Linux Fedora 8 or Fedora 6. I used gparted which is a one step gui tool that you can install with yum install gparted. Linux always recognizes the drive immediately when you turn it on and it mounts as /media/disk automatically. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Stay away from this drive. Very unreliable Saturday, February 23, 2008 GS from Los Angeles, CA
My first drive lasted six months without errors, then suddenly issues appeared and eventually the drive died. The support issued an RMA and eventually received another drive which after I used it to back up my system died two days later!
Based on my reading online the quality of these drives is a roll of the dice. It appears (I have not confirmed mine due to the warranty seal) that they use reconditioned drives and therefore the great price. I am going to spend the extra dollars for the Mybook 1T drive and forget about this one. Was this review helpful?

I had ALL my music on this external. Without any warning, it crashed 5 months after I bought it. I can't blame it for losing all my music, that is my fault, but anything that crashes after a few months of "normal" use should be re-evaluated. Was this review helpful?

3 of 5 Good price; suspect quality Monday, January 28, 2008 miken@vogelsangusa.com from Ravenna, OH
This was a good value, money-wise. The product arrived promptly and worked out of the box with no set-up. I was disappointed that the base sent with the unit did not fit, as it appears to be for a different model. This makes me suspect the overall quality control that goes into the unit. So far, however, I have backed up two machines with the drive and it has worked well. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Excellent drive! Sunday, January 13, 2008 Greg from Troy, NY
I've been using this hd for almost a year now, and I can't complain. I tried at least four different manufacturers; some are bulky, others have performance issues. For its price, this drive is unbeatable.
Although this drive can be operated in both vertical and horizontal orientations, it tends to get extremely hot in the horizontal orientation.
Linux users should keep in mind that this drive is NTFS formatted; ntfs-3g and fuse libraries sometimes fail to mount the drive properly. I recommend reformatting the filesystem.
PS: This drive somehow emulates SATA on boot, so it is possible to install an OS right on the external! Was this review helpful?

I bought two of these separately at two different time and submitted rebate forms. Six months later, the rebate checks still haven't shown up. But that's not the worst part.
Now, for the two drives, one has died and the other one is dying (showing more and more errors). The first one started with more and more errors and eventually became unfixable even if I reformat it, or even repartition it. After sending back to the manufacturer, they sent me back a new one. Apparently, it's really not repairable.
Am I really lucky or is this the average quality of their drives? Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Time will tell but so far so good. Saturday, December 01, 2007 Joe from IA
I've had this for over 6 months now, and it has performed flawlessly, I like the fast transfer speed and huge capacity. Everything I can say has probably been covered by other reviewers, but since I've had it over 6 months I thought I'd let others know that I have had a good experience so far. Got my rebate as promised and it has worked well for me - I use it for backups, streaming video and music, and so far haven't had any issues at all that were negative. The only possible negative is the cord for the ac adapter is a little loose and could be unplugged easily if you're not careful. I like the blue light that flashes purple when it is reading or writing. Note: you can improve performance of it in windows by going to the device manager and go to it's properties to optimize performance. You just have to be more careful in unplugging the usb cable by going to the icon on your taskbar to safely remove the drive. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Hard Drive for the Money! Friday, November 30, 2007 Jim from Southern Illinois
I have 3 of these now.... I love them, they are quiet and I back up all my DVD's and music directly to them.... I can burn DVD's directly from them too... I have a Lacie which sounds like a Model T Ford when it runs....... These are much better...
P.S. To the (Owner of this Site) get all your suppliers to make their instructions in PDF format.... Help save a couple thousand trees... The instruction book for the Lacie had about 40 pages...
Only one in English, that was useless anyway! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Unbelievable! Friday, November 30, 2007 Terry Mack from Villa Park, Illinois
I previously bought a 16 gig jump drive (from another vender 6 months ago) so I could have something portable with which to easily transfer data from one system to another (without having to connect to it through a network). It works but 16 gig is still too small for my uses.
Then I saw the Cavalry 500 gig drive and WOW! I did my research and discovered this drive was very highly rated and the price!!! The price was $30 less than my jump drive! This drive, though not as small as the jump drive, is portable and it can do wonders. It's very easy to connect and it is fast! And at $125.95, how can anyone pass this up? So I bought two!
I have been using both, one on my PC and one on my iMAC. I couldn't be happier. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Exceptional Performance for great price Thursday, November 15, 2007 reev from Maryland
I have been using this drive for just over 6 months now and I'm glad I bought this drive.
You can use this drive right out of box, as it's pre-formatted with NTFS. This saves a lot of time to convert from FAT32.
The data-transfer rates are very fast. I use it like a internal hard-drive (though it's not the exact intended use), and I play quite performance demanding games from this hard-drive. There are no signs of "slow" game-play.
In all, you would'nt be disappointed with this drive. I would definately recommend it to my friends. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Product Monday, November 05, 2007 Annie from Houston, TX
This is an awesome product for the price compared to other brand names. I bought 2 back in March 07. One for me and one for my Mother in Australia. So far nothing has gone wrong. I accidently left the drive on for 3 days and it was fine. I left it in the car for 2 weeks during summer and that was fine too. The one is Australia uses an adapter to change the current and that one works fine too. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good so far Tuesday, October 02, 2007 - Phil from NJ

5 of 5 Exactly as promised Thursday, September 27, 2007 CLC from Tucson, Arizona
It is exactly as promised. Was probably the easiest piece of hardware I have ever installed - actually all I did was plug it in. All of the other reviews were right on - works great, easy to install but does run hot. Great product for the price especially with the rebate. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Excellent product Wednesday, September 26, 2007 A Customer from Palm Bay, FL
Pros: Very quiet and sturdy. It performs very well for my purposes which is a back up drive.
Cons: It does seem to run hot and does not have a cooling fan. The light is very bright and lights up my room at night.
I haven't had any problems with this drive and I have been running it 24/7 since I have gotten it. The packaging was good and the instructions and set up were a breeze. I recommend this product.

5 of 5 Works well with MAC and PC Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from MA
Unwrap it and plug it in. It just works. Both MAC and PC. Performs as well as an internal IDE drive over USB2. Quite, seems to stay cool. Should have bought 2 for the price I got... $95 after rebate. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Good, Fast ... quite heavy Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Eric from Long Beach, CA
The hard drive is fast for the most part however sometimes the t'fer will stop in the middle of a large transfer then resume. Biggest annoyance is the weight of the external hard drive, it becomes quite an annoyance to constantly carry around - so much so that I have stopped carrying it around in my laptop bag and intend to only use it when travelling and having some expectation of use. 5 of 5 Excellent Choice Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Mike McC from Colorado Springs, CO
This has worked very nicely as a backup drive for both my PC and my wife's laptop. Just plugged it in, and was recognized immediately. Great for backing up my system, and for backing up my video files. Highly recommended Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 product works as it should, arrived in timely mann Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from Chicago, IL
there are always 2 parts to the on-line purchasing experience:
1) is the product what you expected? For the price, this drive is great. its big, it hasn't crashed on me yet, and when I plugged it in, I started using it with no muss no fuss.
2) did it arrive on time? was it packaged well? was there a boot print on the box? The thing arrived in a few days, nice and clean. It was obviously shipped on time, so there are no complaints to be made. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Plug and Play as advertised Friday, September 07, 2007 D_Ryan from Mt. Olive, NJ
I chose this model because of the sale price running at the time. It was the cheapest 500gb on the market and didn't disappoint when it came to ease of use and perfomrance. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very Nice External Tuesday, September 04, 2007 A Customer from Washington, D.C.
I run my music off of the HDD. It may run a little hot but don't be scared. Let it cool if you are really paranoid, or keep it near a fan, AC vent, or window sill and let the wind keep it cool.
Very nice external, took a while to ship though. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Outstanding product! Saturday, September 01, 2007 Pat from Slidell La
As I read previous reviews, I was made aware of the 465 Gig instead of 500 Gig and the difficulty to install the stand. Knowing that formatting eats some memory was not a problems. Installing the stand was not complicated either if one noticed the track for the nuts on the side of external hard drive. It performed as promised right out of box. Thanks Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 a very good product for back up and storage Friday, August 31, 2007 Kamal from Chicago
I bought this products from buy.com and was delivered to me within 5 days. This came preformatted in NTFS so I did not have to re format it. It was as easy as plug and play. I used it to back up my data and it worked very smooth. The 16 MB cache helps in faster data transfer.
Overall I am very happy with the product. I do not use it regularly but use it once every 15 days to back up my stuff and then I disconnect it. So far I am a very satisfied customer.
Its 465GB and not 500 GB - I guess this is the case with every 500 GB drive. So if you have more than 450GB of data to back up - look for 750GB or 1TB product. For me, 500 GB is enough for another 2-3 years.

1 of 5 Drive gets hot and noisy Tuesday, August 21, 2007 A Customer from Oakland, CA
I bought the Cavalry 500GB drive in may07 mainly to use it for mp3 and back-up's. It worked okay for 3 months until recently I noticed the drive was making humming noises. Now the noise is quite noticeable and it is annoying every time I turn it on. I bet the heat generated from the drive has something to do with it. I hope it doesn't die on me before I move my back-up's else where. I recommended a friend to buy the Cavalry drive and he too noticed the same. I wouldn't buy Cavalry again. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Beware: the drive is recertified. Monday, August 20, 2007 Rob from Chesterland, OH
I bought one of these just for the drive...lured in by the cheap price and the rebate. I opened up the case and found that the WD5000AAKS inside is a recertified drive. It works fine, but I feel like I was misled. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 So far, so good Tuesday, August 14, 2007 James from Oklahoma
I've had these for about 3 months and they work great. I bought 2 and turn them on only when I'm ready to back up my data. I can't comment on how hot it gets if left on for a long period of time. This is an awesome value for the hard drive space. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good Value Wednesday, August 08, 2007 A Customer from Bothell, Washington
The drive was easy to set up and immediately began working with no glitches. The performance speed was alittle slower than I expected, not as fast as my older firewire drives, but the price compared to the amount of storage you get still gives this drive a good value rating.
