5 of 5 This is my third cavalry drive and so far has outp Monday, March 16, 2009
Johnny from San Jose,Ca

I can only say excellent things about this company. I have had trouble with seagate and maxtor drives at early staged of there life. This cavalry drive has held up with lots of use. I write and erase to my drives twenty four hours per day because I run a recording studio. I know that I use my drives much more than the average user and these drives have held up for over two years now, whereas the other major brand name drives such as Maxtor and Seagate have died after less than one year due to the extreme amount of workload I put on them.

So far I have purchased seven (7) of these CAVALRY External Drives: (2) 750GB (1) 1 TB (4) 500GB They are on 24/7 and I have had no problems with them at all. I find they provide great value for the price.

5 of 5 Use it with your Mac! Thursday, September 11, 2008
Mark P. from Oakland, CA
I've seen some of the other reviews claiming this drive has conked out soon after opening. Not for me! I've been using the drive for about three weeks now, leaving it on continuously, and I have experienced no problems whatsoever. The drive is pretty much as advertised: no frills but sturdy, quiet as a whisper, plug and play, easy to reformat (I'm using an originally PC-formatted drive with Mac OS X), and dependable. Since I'm using it mostly as a backup drive, I haven't had much chance to test access speeds, but I have booted from it with excellent results. I was a little concerned because Cavalry makes identical drives that are "Mac ready" (and charges more for them), but you might as well save a few bucks and reformat yourself; your Mac will recognize it out of the box and reformatting with OS X's Disk Utility is easy as pie!

5 of 5 Fantastic device Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Earl from Texas
No problems so far. I have been using it to store all my info. from my computers harddrive while doing a major systems rebuild. I reinstalled everything fine. Using it now to store h.d. home videos until I have more time to burn them. It came ntsf formatted and ready to go. Computer recognised it immediately. No mention of it but mine came with eSATA connector.

5 of 5 No frills, No problems Thursday, August 07, 2008
A Customer from NE Ohio
This drive came with all the needed cords (power & USB), a vertical stand, and a one-page info sheet from the manufacturer. Simple. But, plug it in, and start using it, and you realize you don't need anything else. Recognized easily using Vista. No noise at all. No delay as drive kicks on out of "sleep mode" (as my Western Digital did). Great storage solution for the cost. If you want good back-up software (since this drive comes with none) download the freeware SyncBack. Totally free and easy to use.

3 of 5 Great Price, So-so product Saturday, August 02, 2008
TechJunky from Boston
I bought this because of price and because of the eSATA as well as USB connections. It works BUT it overheats easily. My apartment was plain and simply too hot at 85degF to use this device. Once the heat broke and my apartment stayed in the 70s this device has been flawless. Bottom line - if you can keep it cool it's okay but it doesn't radiate heat well and WILL lock up your entire PC requiring a reboot if it gets too hot.

5 of 5 Works as advertised - cool, quiet and fast Monday, June 30, 2008
Craig C. from Minneapolis, MN
I am using this Cavalry 500GB USB 2.0 external hard drive as my data drive and backing it up regularly. Given that it doesn't have an internal fan, I am pleasantly surprised at how cool it appears to run. It is quiet, responds instantaneously, and was a breeze to hook up to my PC. I've been running it 24x7 for three weeks now and no problems whatsoever. I highly recommend this drive to anyone needing external and/or portable storage. Would make a great backup drive for the price, too!

5 of 5 It does the job, no muss, no fuss Monday, June 30, 2008
Guy from Los Gatos, CA
Not much to say, except that the drive does what it's supposed to do, without any glitches in my experience. You plug it into the wall, you plug it into your computer's USB port, the OS recognises it, and away you go! No muss, no fuss. Just what a hard drive is supposed to do, I think! Hope that helps! Guy

5 of 5 Reformatted for Linux ext3 Monday, June 30, 2008
Mike from Grapevine Texas
Received the drive and hooked it up to an old 500Mhz PC running Ubuntu 8.04 (headless box sitting in the corner as a file/print server). The PC recognized the drive no problems. I reformatted the disk for ext3. I now back up the content portion of the fileserver everynight via a cronjob and rsync. Flawless performance up till now.

5 of 5 Nice eSata drive, for $79! Saturday, June 28, 2008
MRSOUR from Irvine, CA
Wasn't advertised as eSata, but it is. Needed to buy the cable (I already had an eSata port on my newer desktop) for $9 on eBay and now backups are faster. Just don't forget, if you're backing up from a slower internal (or external) drive, the speed will only be as fast as your SLOWEST drive. I have an internal sata drive, and going from that to this external eSata, is like lightning. Drive is quiet also. Have had no heat issues.

4 of 5 Cool & Quiet Thursday, June 26, 2008
hornmr from Wasco, Oregon
Good: Hardly any heat at all. No fan, so no noise. Bad: Says 500GB, only 465GB useable space. Why don't they say it's a 465GB hard drive? All in all, I like it better than the Lacie HD I bought for more money.

5 of 5 Working seamlessly Tuesday, June 24, 2008
reli37 from Phoenix, AZ
We have had the unit for about 3 weeks now. We purchased it to backup data. When we received it we promptly connected it to our desktop (an HP with Windows XP - Media and SP3 installed). We had to reboot for the drive to be recognized and since then it has worked quietly and efficiently behind the scenes. We have not seen any problems described in other reviews. The size and price were right.

5 of 5 It Works Tuesday, June 24, 2008
A Customer from San Jose, CA
Using with XPtype2, plugged in and was running just like a flash drive(only bigger). I have offloaded a lot of files from the hard drive. Since that was the purpose, I am happy. It does get warmer than I expected, but the case stays far below 60C so it should be alright.

5 of 5 Perfect - So Far Tuesday, June 24, 2008
A Customer from Clio MI
This drive seems to be super. Took it out, plugged it in, gave it a drive letter and it worked. It seems to be very speedy and I love the easy to get to on/off switch. I am mainly using it to backup digital media. Of course, with storage the real proof of it's value can only be seen over time. Right now it's about as nice of an external hard drive as I've used.

5 of 5 Very Quiet, Great Value - Excellent for Mac Time M Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Henry H from Hillsborough, NJ
This drive *extremely* quiet (like half the noise output of another identical drive I purchased made by Fantom Drives). I realize that this is 100% a factor of what manufacturer's hard drive is *inside* the enclosure (and I have not opened the enclosure to determine the brand and model). However, just wanted to note that as of June 2008, Calvary is using an extremely quiet hard drive. On sale at buy.com for 80 clams at the time, for 500GB. It's a no-brainer. *********NOTE TO NOVICE MAC USERS**************. This drive (and almost all its competitors) is formatted for Windows (NTFS). First thing you need to do is connect it to your Mac, then launch "Disk Utility" (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility). Select the drive and click on "Erase" (which is the Mac equivalent of Windows' "format").

1 of 5 Warning--and some excellent advice Thursday, June 05, 2008
IW from New York, New York
My drive died after about 6 months, with about 500 CD's on it. I was pretty upset, but then got some great advice on salvaging the drive--to extract the drive and put it in a new USB enclosure. I bought a new SATA enclosure on line ($25), put in the drive, and voila! it worked! Now the drive works (I don't know for how long of course), but at least I backed it up immediately onto a new hard drive. Definitely try the USB enclosure switch if your drive dies--apparently it's effective 50% of the time. Even the drive manufacturer didn't suggest this possibility when I wrote to them to ask for help.

5 of 5 I'll Be Back!! Wednesday, June 04, 2008
Roland Ledoux from Globe, Arizona
I'm a first time buyer to Buy.com and you have me hooked already! I purchased this product because of the price, which I couldn't believe at first, but dove right in and ordered. The ordering was so very simple and quick and the product arrived well within the time specified, in fact, much sooner than I expected. Installation was just a matter of plugging the hard drive in and my Compaq Presario recognizing the new drive! I was in business almost immediately. It has now been three or four weeks since using it and I have been more than abundantly pleased. In fact, so much so that in about another month, I am purchasing another one for my older son to use on his computer. I have backed up movies and CDs and cataloging my audiobooks and what a blessing to have all this memory!! All I can say is: Buy.com, thanks for making the leap into buying products from you such an outright joy! I will definitely be back!!

1 of 5 10 Miinute Wonder! Wednesday, May 28, 2008
A Customer from Phoenix, AZ
Shipped on time. Great price. Ambivalent reviews... bought it anyway and am sorry I did. The drive worked for all of ten minutes and quit. Shipping to the repair facility is on my tab! I am waiting to see if it really gets fixed or replaced and if the next try is any better. This has been a waste of a month. Previous reviewers have alluded to the "roll of the dice" with these units...... such is the case.

4 of 5 Good buy, works right out of the box Wednesday, May 28, 2008
A Customer from Santa Clara, CA
It's a little heavy for an external hard drive but it's worth it for the price. Plus mine came with a bonus eSata connection (without the bracket and cable); almost seems like they only have one model (that is with SATA) but depending on which one you want to pay for, i.e. you pay slightly higher for the eSata option and get it or just pay for the USB option and get eSata for free :) Nonetheless, had it for a week and works like a charm.
