5 of 5 excellent backup drive Tuesday, September 23, 2008 Kyle from Detroit Lakes, MN
I use this drive solely for time machine backups on my macbook. It works great, and is silent and cool, even when left on for several hours. The power switch on the enclosure is a nice touch, as is the option to stand the drive upright. I can't yet speak to the durability of the drive, but no problems in the first couple of weeks. Some people have voiced concerns over the power requirements of the Western Digital drive inside the enclosure, but mine is running off of a fully loaded power strip without any problems. 5 of 5 plug and play Thursday, August 21, 2008 Bob from Mt. Airy MD
We have not had the drive for a year, nor do we use it a lot, but we can say that we pulled it out of the box, plugged it in and began using it. Windows XP Home recognized it instantly.
On one large file we wanted to transfer between two of our computers we ran a test with four options, as recorded below: a) as e-mail attachment: failed due to size b) 4GB thumb drive: over 10 minutes to upload c) 2GB SD card: over 2 minutes to upload d) Calvary hard drive: less than 30 seconds
We also backed-up over 2000 photos in what seemed like very little time. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This Drive Exceeds Expectations Monday, August 11, 2008 Engineer 10388 from Raleigh, NC
It came formatted NTFS, ready to backup my entire 320GB HD. Just plug in the outboard power supply and the USB cable, open Windows explorer, drag the C:\ drive to the Cavalry drive, and get yourself a cup of coffee. The backup will be done when the coffee is. This is a very fast, quiet, metal-cased unit that delivers what it promises. You can easily afford this from Buy.com but you can't afford to neglect backing up your HD. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Just plug in and use Monday, August 11, 2008 Ron from Oceanside, CA
And it is a lot quicker than other USB drives I've used. With XP Pro I just plugged it in and it was there already formatted. I use it mainly for backups. I've had it only a little while, so I have no long-term experience with it. Was this review helpful?

Cavalry 320GB External Drive – Good Product and Price.
I purchased this Cavalry 320GB External Drive as additional storage drive for my old laptop from Buy.com.
When I search for such kind of product I found many very good reviews about this particular external drive, so on I choose it. Generally this is grate product, not expansive, easy to connect, setup and use.
Only one drawback is this hard drive is still hot, when working, but I hope will be more durable then those which has not fan inside. In summary this product is good compromise between price, capacity, convenience and durability.

5 of 5 Great external drive Wednesday, May 02, 2007 Shel from Los Angeles, California
I purchased a 160GB drive about a year and a half ago, and thought that would last me. My mistake. It's now overloaded with a backup, and photos.
Purchased the Cavalry 320GB drive, and I'm very pleased. Mine came pre-formated in NTFS, which is maybe something they recently started doing.
Anyways, the drive is whisper quiet... you can NOT hear it! Works quickly, stays cool, and is pleasant looking... no great shakes in the looks department, but hey... it's an external hard drive!
Can't say anything bad about this drive. Great for the price! I keep mine connected to my laptop all of the time, it doesn't seem to slow up boot up or the operation of my laptop. Great purchase! Was this review helpful?

I'm very happy with this drive. It runs quieter and is faster than the smaller USB drive I purchased last year. It looks sleek and runs cool even during the gigantic backups I make. The drive comes formatted as FAT32, so if you want to copy entire hard drives, you should convert it to NTFS following Microsoft's instructions referred to in an earlier review. One word of caution is that some "watchdog" types of software prevent the conversion unless you disable them before reformatting the drive. If you do that, it goes smoothly and remarkably fast (assuming you have not already copied files to the drive). Was this review helpful?

I'm happy with my 'Cavalry 320GB 7200RPM USB 2.0 Pre-Formatted External Hard Drive ' purchase. The hard dive works good no problems, I needed to reformat the external hard drive to NT from Fat32, that was easy. Buy.com free shipping is great, I received by external hard drive in 2 days. 4 of 5 Very Nice Sunday, October 29, 2006 A Customer from Milwaukee, WI
Great value. Ready to go out of the box. Would have been nice if it came with some instructions, especially on how to reformat it, however I was able to find them online fairly easily. I've only been using it for a few weeks, and then only once during that time, so I'm not sure yet on how reliable it is going to be, etc. The built-in fan is nice to help keep the hard drive cool. I bought this drive 2 weeks ago. It arrived in 2 days....Even though I picked 3 days shipping. I knew they are coming from CA. And I am living in NY. Thanks Buy.com fast shipping and packaging.
The product itself is way better than I expect. I hear no noise. It never overheat. It gots a fan inside. But I hear nothing. I knew there is a fan because my finger feels air pumping out from the end of the drive.
One more thing, it is pre-formatted for NTFS already. No need to worry about FAT32 problem mentioned before in other reviewers.
Speed is fast, I just transfer 120GB to it. I didn't count the time. But it is A LOT FASTER than my secondary internal harddrive with 5400RPM.
Finally, I know the packaging box looks unprofessional. But the USB drive is brillant. I am so proud to buy this and save a lot of $$ Was this review helpful?

The hard drive came in about two weeks, free shipping. It was in perfect shape and worked with XP, right out of the box. The value is unbeatable for a 300(usable) gig hard drive.
It's slimmer than my other 120 gig drives and super quiet.
Only had it a few days, so time will tell.

This external USB drive has a Western Digital hard drive. Western Digital hard drives have special power requirements, and usually do not tolerate extension cords or power strips. If you use an extension cord or do any thing other than plug the drive directly into the wall, the drive will not power up properly and will not work. Was this review helpful?
4 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Bang for the buck Sunday, September 24, 2006 IanTPKP from Milwaukee, WI
My much more expensive previous external drive had significant issues so I decided to replace it with this one. This new one is small, quiet, looks cool, works as it is supposed to, was ready the instant I plugged it in, and has a handy on/off switch on the back. So far there doesn't seem to be a catch--this is just a good price for a big drive that works.
I think this one worked out to about 36 cents a gig. I remember when storage used to cost was a buck a megabyte. Those were the days...
Anyway, this is a good bang for the buck so far. No idea how long I can expect it to work, but as I found out even the expensive ones aren't fool proof. If you're looking, just go ahead and buy one.

This hard drive works great and is fast. I really like the fact that it has a built in fan. Note: To convert the file format to NTFS was easy. Just go to Microsoft.com and search convert Fat32 to NTSF and follow the instructions. Took less than 10 minutes. If you want to convert, do this before you add any files to this hard drive. This just make the process easier. Was this review helpful?

On sale for $118. I got 320 GB of wide open space. Verticle stand option and the onboard fan keeps the aluminum case cool. Came preformatted FAT32, but I easily reformatted to NTFS by following commands from a Microsoft knowledge base article. As simple as USB plug-n-play. Have made regular back ups, disk images, etc without any trouble. I wish I had ordered two but I was lucky to get the one I bought since the manufacturer ran out. Was this review helpful?

The product worked very well as advertised. It was easy to use with Windows XP. I did not like the file format (FAT32) due to it's limiting backup file size to 4 GB. I assumed with a 320 GB capacity, I'd be able to simply backup the entire hard drive on my laptop (60 GB), but could not do so with the FAT 32 format. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Good value; weak support Wednesday, September 13, 2006 David G from New Jersey
This item worked exactly as I expected. I have a MAC and it said it was MAC compatible. I plugged it into the wall AC outlet and into the USB port and it showed up as an external drive on my MAC immediately. However, there was only a single photocopied page of instructions with the drive and it only addressed WIN driver issues. I was wondering if I needed to do anything more to format it for my MAC. The Cavalry website was very unhelpful. I posted a query there and within 24 hours received a response that said I should use the MAC disk format utility. This was unhelpful because I've never done that before. After calling the Apple Help Line (they are exceptional there), they told me what I needed to do (which was to reformat the drive to be in the MAC format). Three additional sentences on the instructions would have saved me this call. One other gripe, at times the fan is noisy but most of the time not. On a more positive note, I have no complaints about the way the drive looks--shiny metallic silver. Bottom line, this is a good value but don't expect much in the way of support. This thing has a very bright blue LED light on the front that is always on when it is turned on. They could tone that down quite a bit. Otherwise though, it performs flawlessly. If you leave it on while you are booting your computer it slows down the boot process by quite a bit. However it has an on-off switch so you can turn it on after you boot (or off because of that very bright light). Very happy overall--it turned on and was immediately recognized and it saved a back up copy of everything I have. (No auto-save on this model though.) Very happy with unit overall. Compact and not bad looking either. Quiet running and cool in temperature. I only have 1.0 USB so it was a bit slow copying--I'm sure 2.0 (which it is capable of) would perform better. No firewire port on it. Great value. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Drive works great but with limitations Wednesday, September 13, 2006 F. Scott from Phoenix, AZ
I bought this drive to store video files. It comes preformatted with fat32 but that has a file size limitation of 4GB. If you intend to store larger files reformat to NTFS. The resulting storage space is reduced to 298GB. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Good value... Wednesday, September 13, 2006 Nick from Reading, PA

First impression was that the drive looked cheap. Packaging was less than brilliant and all the components seemed bland and generic. Although at the price point, i didn't expect much more.

With that said, i haven't had any problems with the drive and i'm really satisfied with it. Hooking it up was a breeze and it has performed well ever since.

Note: The blue LED on the front of the drive is extremely bright and will light up an entire room at night.

The Cavalry 320GB drive is great and simple to use. I am a photographer and intend to use thhis drive as my primary editing space.

Works Great out of the box, pre-formatted very nice touch. The small fan in it is a nice touch also. Keeps enough air going through it that the drive doesn't bake inside the metal case.
This is a small foot print that fits good on my desk. Not big and bulky like some of the other I have seen.
You really do get what you pay for with this :)
Solid unit, I'd get another one (if I ever needed it). Prime backup drive.
