3 of 5 Cheap & Noisy storage Thursday, April 02, 2009
Timothy M from Kohala Coast, HI

For 2TB of storage, the price can't be beat however the fan is about as loud as a desktop power supply. That makes the Cavalry 2TB unacceptable for use in a shared location like an office/bedroom. Also, the USB transfer rate seems noticeably slower than other external drives using the same connection. Would I buy it again? Only for use in a louder location and if speed isn't an issue.

5 of 5 Great hard drives! Thursday, February 26, 2009
Randi Brown from Sweetwater, Idaho
Love this hard drive! Tons of room to store my stuff! Runs as a full 2 terabit hard drive as apposed to mirrored 1 tera's. Though it is slower in transfer with the USB cable, than one with a SAT cable. I cant complain, I have LOTS of space now!

5 of 5 Hard To Beat. Easy and Simple to Use. Monday, December 15, 2008
Billy from Amarillo, Texas
No problems with this drive. Easy to convert from a single raid to DUAL 1gb drives in a simple case. Reason I did is that one of them could go out at any time and i would rather loose half the information than all of it. Although I have it backed up elsewhere having it all in one area is convienent when I trave. Thanks Cavalry for your INSTANT CUSTOMER SERVICE.....No Recordings. REAL PEOPLE enthustaic to assist at ANYTIME.

4 of 5 Small brick, big storage Monday, August 04, 2008
A Customer from NC
Plug and play worked well. Additional connection choices besides USB would help. Fan is very noisy, would not work well sitting out in a home theatre setting.

4 of 5 Low price but inferior case. Tuesday, July 29, 2008
A Customer from Frisco, Tx
I usually shy away from generic external hard drives but the price was too low to ignore. When the drive arrived I attempted to install it but only 1/2 of the capacity was recognized. I called Cavalry tech support (they were quick, friendly and helpful) and together we diagnosed the problem (see the answer I posted to question #1). The drives inside the case are WD but the case itself is cheaply made. It is necessary to completely disassemble it to remove the drives. There are multiple differently sized screws and they attach to plastic. This case could probably withstand only a couple of disassemblies before falling apart. That being said, for a low price you are getting 2 1TB WD drives and an external enclosure. Money well spent.

5 of 5 Geat for home use Monday, July 14, 2008
Keith from Austin, TX
This is a nice external hard drive. The only thing I would complain is that it's heavy compared to other 2TB-in-one-drive. Otherwise everything's fine.

4 of 5 Best value per TB, wish it was Firewire Tuesday, June 10, 2008
A Customer from Chicago
Nice aluminum case - even when copying 300-400 GB of music, it never got too hot (can't say the same for the Powerbook or the crappy "Ultra" external drive the data was coming off of).
I wish it had firewire, but you get what you pay for. The USB feels sluggish compared to FW, but I'm not planning on editing video with it or anything.
Using it on a Mac, so the included software is useless. Had to open it up and switch a jumper to be able to see both 1TB drives - it came configured as a single 2TB drive. Software RAID in OS X's Disk Utility proved to be unreliable so I am just leaving it as two drives.
The drives are Western Digitals.
The fan can be noisy depending on the position the case is placed in.
It appears to shut itself down when the attached computer shuts down - I haven't paid too much attention but it doesn't seem to do this when the computer sleeps, which would be nice too.
Bottom line, it's the cheapest way to get two 1TB drives that I could find. No frills, just a ridiculous amount of space for the price.

5 of 5 Satisfied Customer Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Jim S. from Chicago, IL
The drive looks solid and well built. I purchased this because I needed additional space to store HD video files that I record using an Elgato TV tuner in a Mac environment. It works great for that purpose. It comes plug and play for a PC in the NTFS format. I initially had trouble formatting the drive in the Mac HFS plus format and called the toll free support line listed in the Cavalry pdf manual. Within two rings, I talked to a human being and was transferred immediately to someone who was more familiar with Macs. Turns out, there are two methods (both described in the pdf manual and on Cavalry's internet support page) to format the drive using the disk utility app in OS X, Leopard. I needed to use the method whereby you create new partitions even though you may only want one partition which was the way the drive came, albeit in NTFS format. The drive then was easily formatted to HFS plus for use with my Macs. Other reviews that I read, have complained that the cooling fan is loud. I will agree with that assessment. I initially set it up via USB to a Mac Mini so I could backup about 475 gig of data that was on another drive connected to the Mini. The transfer took about 8-9 hours or so. The Calvary drive was very cool to the touch during and after the transfer. The other drive, a Lacie, was quite hot because it does not use a fan (but is very quiet). I would be concerned about the loudness of the fan only if I planned to place the drive on my desk near the monitor. The fan noise is/was not an issue for me, since I plan on having this Cavalry 2T connected to the USB port of a NAS drive that is connected to my gigabit switch located in the utility room of my lower level. Finally, I was lucky to get a great deal on it including free and fast delivery from buy.com

5 of 5 huge space Monday, May 05, 2008
carlos from LA, CA
i purchased two of these back when it was on sale for $380 or so, so it's value then was certainly better than it might be presently. That said, 2TB was just what i needed to backup all my dvd's to one convenient location for streaming across my home network. the drive is a little on the heavy side, but that comes courtesy of the well built and sturdy metal case that, with the included fan, serves to keep the drives pretty cool. it's nice that while the usb cable is unplugged (even if powered on), the fan will shut off to save on noise and power. only once did I have an issue where the drive stopped responding, but it's hard to tell if it was a problem with the drive or with the OS - has not happened since.
