The CADA-SA2H Series offers an unbeatable combination of RAID data protection, 3.0Gbit/sec eSATA speed and a vast storage capacity of 2TB (1TB mirrored). This dual-bay disk array features swappable hard disks and a built-in RAID controller. The unit arrives preconfigured in RAID 1 to protect your important data—if one drive fails, replace it with an identical drive and the data will automatically rebuild.

Leave it in RAID 1 mode for automatic background rebuilding and optimum security for your files, or configure to RAID 0 for increased data reading and writing speeds. Factory default is RAID 1 GUI mode, but also supports RAID levels 0, 1 and 0+1(safe 33/safe 50). Its SATA interface provides a faster boot process and quicker loading of programs and data. Ideal for saving hefty files, video, music, protecting databases or working directly on the drive, it delivers high-capacity performance and data security.

The unit is factory pre-configured in RAID 1 and ready to use out of the box. Install the easy-to-use RAID configuration software and the included SATA to eSATA bracket kit to take full advantage of the incredible set of features.

5 of 5 Great drive but slightly noisy Tuesday, February 17, 2009

2TB’s for approx. $240. What, are you kidding me?! No, it’s no joke! But, although it’s a great drive, it is a little noisy. I have mine located in a cabinet that has dimensions of 36”W x 48”H x 12”D. With the doors closed, I can hear the drive humming ever so softly, the kind of noise someone might want while trying to fall asleep. With the doors open, it gets noticeably louder, a Db level in the range of a toilet refilling its tank. I did notice that, when picked up, it seems to lose a little bit of its noise output, so I’m wondering if the cabinet is vibrating. I’m going to play around with it to see if I can quiet it down. The lights on the front seem a little bright as well (the blue shines through the crack in the cabinet door and provide a nice soft glow at night) but in the end, if I had another $240 to spend, I’d get another one because I can live with the noise (we live in a busy neighborhood in Chicago, so noise is a part of our everyday life) but can’t live without hard drive space! PS – I also think the drive should ship as RAID 0 and not RAID 1 because the selling point, at least for me, was the 2TB storage and RAID 1 will ‘only’ give you 1TB. The reformatting procedures were a little convoluted and then Vista gave me a hard time, but again, the drive works great and for $240, who cares?!

Full 2T storage came as a mirrored 1T. The instruction insert on how to convert from mirrored RAID 1 to straight storage to use the full 2T were incomplete to say the least. Plus the utility to set up the drive that is included: SteelVine 5.1.22 does not work. However, the latest SteelVine is available from: http://cavalrystorage.com/su_download.htm and it works. Plus the technical support knew exactly what the issues were to convert from RAID 1 and were able to define the steps that worked. The key is delete all the existing partitions on both 1 T drives to be able to create a single 2T drive. So, throw away the CD that comes with the drive and get the latest utility and documentation on-line, then everything works great. Fast 2T of storage.
