The sleeper hit of 1965, CAT BALLOU was declared an instant classic when its sly blend of Western parody and rapid-fire action hit the screen. Lee Marvin won an Oscar® for Best Actor for his dual role as noseless (“it got bit off in a fight”) gunslinger Tim Strawn and as Kid Shelleen, the woozy, boozy has-been who goes up against him. Jane Fonda co-stars as Catherine “Cat” Ballou, the schoolmarm-turned-outlaw who teams up with the Kid. Singer Nat King Cole and comedian Stubby Kaye also appear, singing the title song, “The Ballad of Cat Ballou.” This wild and wooly adventure is “the ultimate American spoof of the American Western.” (Judith Crist)

Editor's Note

Fonda is agreeably peppery as a teacher in the Old West who wreaks vengeance on the men who murdered her father. Marvin enlists as a drunken old gunfighter trying to retain his old glory and also portrays his twin brother, a rustler with a silver nose. A 60s-style genre spoof with enough action to keep it real. Marvin won an Academy Award for his two performances.

Plot Summary

4 of 5 A Classic Western Comedy Tuesday, August 03, 2004
Jack Dallas from Miami, Florida

A young Jane Fonda is cute and feisty but Lee Marvin steals the show as the drunken gunfighter. Marvin also plays a dual role as the villain with the silver nose. The movie starts off at the hanging of Fonda's character and is told in flashback. Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye walk through the scenes unseen providing the musical ballad backdrop to the story. When Lee Marvin, famous as a dime novel western gunfighting hero, is hired for protection he shows his true metal by showing up inebriated. His skill as a marksman is demonstrated when he, "..missed the barn". My favorite memory is his rendition of Happy Birthday at an inopportune time. Duane Hickman, of TV Dobie Gillis fame, plays the cowardly "bad guy" more interested in Fonda than anything else. Cat Ballou is a worthy addition to any DVD collection.
