Hayao Miyazaki's CASTLE IN THE SKY is a rousing adventure that follows an orphan named Sheeta as she eludes the clutches of a secret agent named Muska while trying to discern her family's history. After her first escape from Muska, Sheeta meets up with a young boy named Pazu, whose father, a photographer, was disgraced after he took a picture of the legendary flying island of Laputa and had it dismissed as a hoax. When the two realize that a family heirloom Sheeta carries allows them to levitate, the two begin a search for the lost island, trailed by Muska, who is also searching for Laputa.

"Castle in the Sky" is among my favorites of Miyazaki's films. As matter of fact, it's the 2nd choice of mine behind "Spirited Away." The plot, the imagery, the characters .... all are outstnading and second to none. I agree with one reviewer though, Disney's English dubbing is disappointing, particularly the voice for Pazu is just way too mature for a little young boy. As a result, I would recommend everyone who is interested in this film, which I think you should, to watch it's Japanese version with English subtitle. It's a very very beatiful and wonderful flick. Castle in the Sky (Laputa) is easily one of my favorite Miyazaki films. I have seen the Japanese versions so many times and always enjor it. Similar to Miyazaki's other films such as Totoro, red pig, Kiki's delivery, it is full of imagination and a dream of aviation. This is a masterpiece of anime. I strongly recommend it.

Disney sure screwed up this release of the wonderful "Laputa - Castle in the Sky". The first mistake they made was choosing to use an adult's voice instead of a child's voice for the little boy, Pazu. I simply could not believe my ears! And this guy who does the voice-over couldn't even pronounce the little girl's name correctly. Disney, it's "Sheeta" not "Sheda". The next error was handing over the film to some arrogant composer who decided to make sure his music took center stage (Don't they all, when will this madness stop? How much longer will we have to strain our ears to hear dialog because the music is too darn loud!?). There are scenes in the original, such as when Pazu is playing the bugle on the rooftop and Sheeta wakes up, that are completely ruined because the mood is broken by the musical score that insists on rambling on in the background when there should've been silence except for the sound of the bugle. What a botched-up mess this soundtrack is! Last year I purchased the original Japanese version dubbed in English and it immediately climbed up the ladder past all of my Disney favorites to become my #1 favorite animated film. This is the one of the best Miyazakifs classic and my personal favorite. So this is sad to me to say anything negative.<BR>

It was a torture to listen. If you liked original Japanese track, DO NOT even try to listen English track!! If you switch language between English and Japanese, you will notice Disney redid and added the background music. Disneyfs version literary destroyed and ruined the movie. <BR>

For example, at the beginning when the pirates assaulted the flying ship that hold Sheeta, the original was mostly done by the strings and synthesizer, but Disney added the drums. The result was the techno kind music changed into army marching song so the atmosphere of the scene. And also they carried away or added their own version of music where the original didnft have the background music at all. Like, when Pazu operated the elevator at the mine where he works, Disney added old 70fs cartoon kind music which makes the scene feels like old cartoon comedy not the Anime. <BR>

And a bit talkier? Charles Solomon of Amazon.com you are so modest and too kind to Disney. They talked way too much! Even though, it is not as annoying as the background music, it is still terribly done. Their dialogue dose not communicated at all, as if two complete separate lines cut and pasted together. Some actors donft have a right talent to do voice acting. It requires completely different talent. So be aware of that, too. <BR>

Still this is great movie to watch. Enjoy the original Japanese version or French version which is faithful to the original. <BR>
