 Editor's Note
Alternately revered as a true New Age shaman and decried as a charlatan or lunatic, Carlos Castaneda remains to this day a controversial figure with a sizeable cult following. This documentary from Castaneda supporter Ralph Torjan provides an intriguing and off-beat look at a fascinating, larger-than-life personality.

| | Professional Reviews | San Francisco Chronicle 4 of 10 There's plenty of material to make a movie from, but Enigma of a Sorcerer, made by former Castaneda disciple and novice filmmaker Ralph Torjan, amounts to an infomercial posing as an expose. Many of those interviewed -- from former lovers to dedicated disbelievers -- speak colorfully about this still-fascinating man and paint a composite portrait of a spiritually searching era. But because the elusive Castaneda left behind no video, only a handful of photographs and a single tape-recorded interview, writer-director-producer- editor Torjan was faced with the question of how to visually depict Castaneda's metaphysical work. But his solution -- talking heads against backdrops of psychedelic computer screensaver patterns -- is cheesy and distracting. The less said of the "tribal" techno soundtrack the better. This documentary might have been better off as an audio book. - Joe Brown
