Canon Powershot SD870 IS - Digital Camera Review

    Published on: 10/8/2007 8:13 PM
I became almost uncontrollably depressed watching Maria Sharapova's early exit from the US Open, but one thing relieved my anguish: they continued to run her Canon PowerShot commercial throughout the rest of the tournament. Why did this assuage my sorrow? Maybe because - just like Maria - I too am guilty of taking millions of pictures of my dog Mackenzie. Or, it could have been that I was anxiously awaiting my chance to review the Canon PowerShot SD870 IS and the commercial just happened to be so inspiring?...read the full review

    5 of 5 Great Camera Thursday, August 07, 2008
    Allen from Cleburne, Texas

I wanted a "user friendly", good camera, to take on an Alaskan vacation. I knew that Canon cameras would be hard to beat in all the usual categories, lens quality, performance and great pictures, so I started reading a lot of various Canon camera reviews. The SD870IS caught my attention very quickly when I read that it had a 3" viewing screen. This is a great feature for both shooting and reviewing your pictures. The wide angle lens is also a great feature. I bought the camera and took it to Alaska and was more than satisfied with the way it performed. I would recommend this camera to anyone that wants a high quality, easy to use, point and shoot camera.

5 of 5 Very nice camera Monday, June 16, 2008
    A Customer from Owasso, ok
Great pictures, large LCD screen, great functionality all in a small package. Battery charged quickly and easily (about 2 hours), and was fairly easy to start using out of the box. This little camera delivers great pictures in most lighting, although the flash is a little bit lacking in dark situations, but that is to be expected due to the very small size of the camera (about the size of a deck of cards). Overall satisfied with the camera though, as it easily takes the best pictures in its class. Buy.com was quick about shipping, and delivered the product as promised, undamaged, and in perfect condition ready to use.

    5 of 5 Perfect high-quality compact camera Monday, June 02, 2008
    Jeremy from Brooklyn, NY
I upgraded from an SD400 to this just recently. As the third generation of Digital ELPH cameras that I have owned, I have a lot of experience with this line. Canon Optics are the measure of quality that other compact digital cameras aspire. There are others that may match them in a model or two, but you aren't going to do better than Canon. With a large (for a compact) CCD, those megapixels aren't being wasted. Because of the optics and CCD size, this camera has a slight improvement in visual quality over the 1100. While you may not care if you are a casual owner, the purple-shifts you will see in any compact camera on high-contrast edges is really minimized in this camera. The wide view angle really makes a difference when shooting group photos. A noticeable improvement from my older SD400. The interface is easy to use, drops the never-used optical finder (who uses that on a compact digital anyway?), and gives you a nice big screen. The best feature of the interface is setting the physical slider to a macro-- meaning you can save your exact settings to a "quick notch." Highly valuable if want, say, a low-light portrait setting and a well-lit panorama setting at your fingertips without going through the interface. I highly recommend this camera and would give it a slight edge over the 1100. While it is (very slightly) bulkier it is still easy to carry and very light, but has a larger CCD, larger LCD, and wider zoom. They add up to a big difference in my book.

5 of 5 I bought it for the wide(r) angle lens Wednesday, March 19, 2008
    A Customer from Northeast Ohio
I think about 1% of the ten million digital P&S cameras have a zoom lens that gets wider than about 35mm. This one goes to 28mm and it really makes a difference. Great pictures!

5 of 5 Fantastic Product and great service from Buy.com Friday, December 28, 2007
    italianwne from West Hills, CA
I had other Canon products and have always been extremely happy with them and that include my recent purchase of the Canon PowerShot SD870. I took some amazing pictures and videos of my family at Christmas time. It is very user friendly. Love it! Fantastic product! Also, my experience with Buy.com was the best. Some other places may have the item at a few dollards less but the service has been horrible. I will always use Buy.com!

5 of 5 Good service on a great camera Thursday, November 29, 2007
A Customer from Mill Creek, WA
My wife dropped our old SD550 and it stopped working so I did some research and decided to get this camera based on other reviews. I was concerned about getting a camera without a viewfinder, but the larger screen more than compensates for it. I ordered this and it arrived in a week. Great service!

    5 of 5 Great Replacement Thursday, November 29, 2007
    A Customer from Tallahassee, Florida
I bought the Canon SD 870IS to replace another very good Canon, the SD 750. The supplier delivered it quickly and I have not been disappointed. The image stabilization and large LCD screen were major factors in my decision.

    5 of 5 Great pocket camera. . . Wednesday, November 28, 2007
    Brian from Lake Charles, LA
First of all, I'm the kind of guy that does extensive research before I make significant purchases like this one. I read reviews, comparisons, etc. for about a month before I purchased this one. There are other cameras with similar features for significantly less money, but this one is probably the best balanced of the lot with the most quality. It's fairly light and small, easily fits in a pant or shirt pocket, but other cameras are smaller and lighter. It takes great pictures, though, and has just enough manual control to keep things interesting. It won't replace a dedicated dSLR, or even a higher end point-and-shoot, but for a pocket camera you won't find anything better, even in Canon's current lineup as of October 2007. Of course, Canon knows this and prices it higher than many competing models from other companies. Image stabilization (the IS in the name) works well. Optical zoom is adequate for a pocket camera. LCD display is as good as you'll find in bright light (i.e. not great, but usable and better than most), but there's no viewfinder to supplement it (not a big deal for most people). I wish it had a RAW image output, more manual controls, and a little better low light performance (the problem with all small-chip designs), but as a camera to grab on the way out the door to a party/sports event/drive it's a great alternative to lugging around a higher end model. The case is obviously built for style, and I've already got some scratches on it from riding around in my otherwise empty pocket, but I didn't buy it for style but rather for function. After all, you're more likely to take pictures if your camera is easy to take along.
