Canon Powershot SD850 IS Review
DigitalCameraReview.com
Published on: 6/20/2007 3:25 PM
When the Canon Powershot SD850 IS arrived for this review, I presumed it was a follow-on or variant to the SD800 IS. However, it's actually the successor to the Powershot SD700 IS, since the SD700 IS has the older DIGIC II processor and they both have a 35-140mm (equivalent) focal length. The SD800 IS has a wider angle lens (28-105mm equivalent), so is a slightly different place in the market (at least according to Canon) than this SD850 IS model....read the full review

4 of 5 Nice budget camera Saturday, April 05, 2008
A Customer from Rego Park, NY
I was looking for an ultra-compact camera, and ended up buying this one after doing some serious research on different web sites, and comparing the Pros and Minuses of each camera. My budget was up to $350, and I must say that this canon is giving the best bang for your buck, and for $100 less than what I planned to spend- even better. The pictures are sharp, the start time is excellent, it is small, has 4X zoom comparing to the standard 3X of the ultra-compact, and it gives you the option to point and shot, or to play a bit with the exposure time and EV if you want to. When I read reviews, I mostly want to hear the disadvantages, so I'll specify a bit about what bothers me: Although it is small, it is still not small enough to fit into your back pocket (especially if you wear a tight jeans or pants), and it is a bit heavier than what I expected. In addition, the continuous stills shot is a bit slow, but that might be because of my memory card- it might be better with a faster memory. The bottom line- if you are looking for beautiful pictures no matter under what conditions ot where you take them, this one is for you.

5 of 5 Almost perfect Thursday, February 21, 2008
M. Hunt from Intercourse, PA
I purchased this as a replacement for my Canon Powershot S400, a solid camera that served me well for the last 5 years. Overall, the 850 is an improvement. I'd consider it perfect except for one major flaw, described below. Pros: 1. The Image Stabilization feature truly works. I have not taken a blurry photo yet, whereas blur was a frequent problem with my S400. 2. Solid build quality. 3. Intuitive to use. 4. Good image quality, though you will likely only need the full 8MP if planning to enlarge above 8x10. Cons: 1. White skies are a frequent problem - this is a common issue for compact digitals, but I've been frustrated by the 850's tendency to capture the sky as pure-white even on blue-sky days. This was less of a problem with the S400.

5 of 5 the best compact camera Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Hardy from Rutherford, NJ
This is the best camera I ever had. The picture quality is really good, no regret to buy it. Before I bought this camera, I did compare with sony, especially sony cybershot T70,the result is canon SD850 far superior than sony, and one thing I really like is easy to use, it is not as complicated as sony. I love to take a shot using manual mode or scene mode. I think thats make the picture really good and natural. I really recommend it.

5 of 5 As expected from Canon Monday, December 17, 2007
A Customer from Maryland
I've had many friends buy Canon cameras over the years and they all have been happy. I can now belong to that list. :) I like the speed of the power on and how quickly it is ready to take pictures. It was purchased for a cruise and it delivered some gorgeous photos. My SO complained about the On/Off button being soooo small with her nails, but overall she was happy with the camera. I am still learning the functions of the camera since I really did not have time to read the manual before the trip. For now, I recommend it.

5 of 5 I found my point and shoot Sunday, December 02, 2007
A Customer from Chicago, IL
I was looking for a carry around, excellent instant photo taking gadget. This is it. Even in auto mode it takes wonderful pictures. It's small enough to carry around. The 4x zoom is great for such a little camera. It has only manuals to play with exposure, but hey that is what I specifically wanted. Something quick and easy to use.

5 of 5 nice little camera Friday, November 30, 2007
b from milwaukee, wi
I bought this for my mom. A big step up from her old digital camera. She's learned how to use it pretty quickly, and she has to know how to use the red eye correction or else just about every photo of people would be flawed. I prefer the slr, and in general, the gimmicky screens just cause people to take out-of-focus pictures. I told her only use the viewfinder, unless she can hold it perfectly steady out in front of her. Father-in-law has the 700, I believe, and can't take an in-focus shot to save his life--always uses the screen. The size is great for taking places and actually using it, and that's important.

Great customer service and fast shipping. Camera worked good, nice exterior design and easy menu's. Did not work for me in night or dark situations. Maybe it was my amaturish photo taking skills.

5 of 5 Excellent Camera - Really the successor of SD700 Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Vas'Morgan from Orlando FL
Few months back i planned to buy a digital camera. I ordered for SD1000 and received it. After seeing my friend's Canon SD700 pictures i was totally disappointed with the pictures from SD1000. So I returned SD1000 and i postponed my purchase of Digital Camera. Now after doing extensive research, i planned to go for SD850. It is far far better than SD1000 and i can say it is the real successor of SD700. It has all features of SD700, in addition to that it has many more features which is not available in SD700. Pictures (both Indoor and outdoor) from SD850 is really awesome. I am totally impressed and Satisfied with Canon's SD850.
