Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Camera Review
DigitalCameraReview.com
Published on: 3/22/2008 2:29 PM
The SD1100 IS is an impressive digicam when compared to the competition, but it doesn't fare quite as well when compared to the original SD1000. Where does the SD1100 IS fail to measure up to its illustrious predecessor? Most notably, in the lens: the SD1000's zoom was sharper, slightly wider, and produced noticeably better quality images and less purple fringing than the SD1100's version. ...read the full review

5 of 5 Love my compact, easy-to-use camera! Friday, February 06, 2009
A Customer from Cerritos, CA

I put off buying a digital camera for as long as I could, and it wasn't too hard, considering that I sort of took a hiatus from taking photos, as well as from being in photos (but that's another story...). My sister decided to buy me a camera as my graduation gift, so I asked around about the models that people were most happy with, and the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH Camera was a very popular suggestion. I'd also read reviews on it, in the past, and it always received high marks. What I'd always heard was that Canon cameras had great lenses, and were user-friendly, AND that they were priced fairly for the quality. Everything I've read or heard has turned out to be true. I'm one of those people who like to figure out how to use a product as much as possible before reading the manual (cover to cover), and because this camera's menus are well-designed, I was able to get started w/o relying on the manual for its basic operation. The photos come out very clear, and the shutter feels more "responsive" and doesn't lag, as some cameras do. Because the camera is so compact and light, I'm able to take it w/ me everywhere, which allows me to capture even more memories. I would recommend this model for any casual shutterbugs. The camera body feels solid, and the switch also feels like it will last a while. The camera doesn't come w/ its own case, so you'll have to shell out an extra $10 - $20 for that, but no biggie...

4 of 5 great video quality Friday, December 12, 2008
David from New York, NY
I was looking for a pocket camera that would take decent video at 640x480. I have tried at least 5 different cameras and most of them had atrocious video quality (lots of noise, even in well-lit conditions). For some reason, this camera has a very smooth video image. I even directly compared it with the more expensive, higher megapixel Canon SD770. The difference in video quality was night and day with the 770 having a very noisy, unwatchable picture. As for picture quality, the SD770 had *slightly* better sharpness and color. Is it worth the difference in price? Definitely not, if you factor in the video quality. It can be difficult to take a sharp picture with these little cameras, as any shaking of the hand gets magnified. Just take multiple shots of what you want (hey it's digital!). Bottom line - probably the best 640x480 video quality you are going to find on a camera this small, and for pictures it leaves only a bit to be desired.

5 of 5 Upgraded from Canon A85 Saturday, April 26, 2008
Lee from Houston, TX
My wife has owned the Canon A85 for quite some time. Although it is a very nice camera, she wanted something a little smaller and something that would shoot faster to catch the little one in action.

"Attack of the Show" did a review on the SD1100 in February 2008 and loved it. After hearing all the nice things they had to say about it, I felt comfortable enough to buy one. The specs looked good on Canon's website and two months later BUY.COM had them available.

First impression: Nice and compact. Compared to the A85 (which isn't bad either), it seems half as thick. Perfect for the little lady who wants to toss it in her purse.

I could make this a lengthy article but I'll cut to the chase and give you the PROS vs. CONS.

PROS:

- 8 megapixels. For family and casual use, you really don't need more than that.
- Good image quality. Sharp images.
- Video capture is quite acceptable. We plugged the camera into our 42" plasma and were happy with the results. Heck, I think the quality is better than the Canon Z85 video camera we own!
- Small, compact, & very light. Easy to hold.
- Menu functions are similar to A85 so there was a very small learning curve.
- Large LCD on back. Very bright and sharp.
- Quick boot up time.
- Price ain't bad for what you get.

CONS:

- Not a big fan of the proprietary battery. They cost around $40+ each. When you travel, you'll want at least 2 extras.
- SD card slot is difficult to access. Fat fingers, beware.
- 8MP cameras should come with AT LEAST a 1 GB card.
- Doesn't shoot much faster than the A85. An SLR is probably the best option for quick shooting.
- The switch on the back for switching camera modes feels out of place. You end up putting your finger on it when you shoot and I always feel like I'm going to move it. Not a big deal, just an observation.
- I 'wish' it had manual controls to set your own shutter speed and aperture.
- Not really a CON...but the IS feature is touted as the main upgrade from the SD1000. However, we can't see a difference from the shots taken with the A85 and the SD1100 to see if it is that big of a deal.

Overall, I think the camera is a great buy. Heck, they even make it in four fun colors to choose from! If you are looking to buy one to replace your old <gasp> film camera or upgrade from a digital camera with 5MP or less, definitely put this on your list of possible buys.

...and of course, look no further than BUY.COM to order one. Mine arrived in about 3 days with FREE shipping. Sweet.
