    Canon PowerShot S5 IS Review

The Canon Powershot S5 IS is a little smaller than an SLR, you can't change the lens and there's no through-the-lens optical viewfinder. Instead, you get a fixed 12x zoom lens, an electronic viewfinder and no option for shooting RAW files. What you do get is one hell of a compact camera....read the full review

    5 of 5 Great Camera Tuesday, February 03, 2009
    Alicia from Redstone, CO

I really like the quality of the pictures taken with this camera. One of the best features, and the real selling point for me about this camera is the "video" button. Switching from taking a picture to creating a video is simply by pushing the "video" button. No delay. Also, I like the feature while taking video, that I am able to use the zoom feature.

5 of 5 Excellent Camera for (almost) any price Monday, August 04, 2008
    Jay from Windsor, Ct
My 3 year old S1IS camera died and I'd been thinking about upgrading to the new S5IS so I wasn't to sad when it broke. The S5IS is everything the S1IS was and much much more. My favorate feature, as with the S1IS, is the video mode. This is one of the few cameras that allows you to adjust the zoom while taking videos. If you buy this camera you won't need a camcorder unless you want more then 12x zoom although with the 8 meg CCD I can even use the 4x digital zoom for a total of 48x (but you can see some graininess at full 48x). Only issue I have is all my S1IS lens attachments don't fit the S5IS and I needed to change the memory card from Compact Flash to SD.

    5 of 5 excellent Monday, June 30, 2008
    Billrn969 from Lexington, Ky
Canon's S5IS is an excellent choice for a novice or expert photographer! It is simple to use, but has full features for the mpore experienced. It is light weight and size is perfect for a quick trip or if you do not want to carry a full DSLR. Highly recommend!

So far so good. Great feel. Good view screen even in direct sun. A memory card did not come with camera and the lens cover is not secure. Received the camera before the email shipping notice.

    5 of 5 S5 Improvements compared to the S2 Saturday, May 17, 2008
A Customer from San Francisco, CA
I previously was a happy owner of a Canon S2 IS. I upgraded when I discovered that the new model had fixed many of the shortcomings of the old model. The most important improvements include being able to manually adjust the gain on the microphone. As a musician, I use the camera to record music rehearsals and performances. The automatic gain control is now an option as before it was the only choice. The other important improvement was the ability to take longer videos, now over 30 minutes of best quality or 60 minutes compressed on SDHC cards. These two improvements make the camera into a video camera and a portable audio recording studio. The audio and video quality is very good. After playing with the camera for a few weeks, I've discovered many other new features that are significant improvements. The face detection technology is great, the color balance and rendering has greatly improved -- especially purples, which are now very natural looking. Many often used settings have been taken off the menus to make them easier to get at. I especially like the programmable button, which I've set up to do custom white balances. This makes all my pictures look much better. Another feature I very much like is the ability to gray out part of the viewfinder so that you can compose pictures accurately for 4X6 prints. Unfortunately, some of these features are not the default, so you have to thoroughly read the not-so-well written manual to discover all the camera's capabilities. I'm hoping Canon will add a few more little improvements to future models. A mini jack for plugging in an external microphones would be my first choice, along with the ability to record and play back audio MP3s. That, and a mini jack for headphones would turn the camera into an all-in one power house. While we're at it I have a few more requests: HD video recording, better high ISO performance, time-lapse photography without connecting it to a computer, Video recording directly to a computer, a high-res OLED viewfinder and a higher depth-of-field (high f-stop) would make it perfect.

5 of 5 Most Features, Best Value in sub-SLR world Tuesday, March 18, 2008
    Gadget Guy from Algonquin, IL
What a camera! I upgraded from the S3IS, and never looked back. Improvements include 8MP (vs. 6MP), hot show for ext. flash, no 1GB limit to videos, and DIGIC III processor (vs. DIGIC II). Love the long zoom. Love the quality of the video. Love that it takes AA batteries. Lots of scene modes for quick photos, and lots of user-adjusted settings if you want to play with aperture, ISO, etc. I bought a lens adapter for filters (just 3 for now), and I bought a .66 wide angle lens, which is great for wide outdoor shots, especially large groups or live sports events. When I travel light, I take my Canon SD870IS. When I want maximum flexibility, I bring the S5IS with filters and lens, AND the SD870IS (in the same fairly small camera bag). So may things I haven't even tried yet. I will never get bored of all the options. Start slow with the excellent presets/automatic settings, and expand to more custom options at your discretion.

5 of 5 Great Camera for a Great Price Tuesday, March 04, 2008
    A Customer from Portland, OR
This camera is of fairly high quality, but only for the fraction of the price of "professional models." It is easy to use and not as big as the advertisements lead one to believe. IF it were stolen I'd buy another.

    5 of 5 Overall - Great Vaule! Wednesday, December 26, 2007
    A Customer from Hamilton, Oh
I've had a more expensive high end digital camera for several years now. I bought this for my son and was very surprised by it's performance. Anyone can take this camera out of the box and take exceptional photos. With a little playing around you'll quickly learn additional options and enhancements for your photo taking. I like the fact that this camera takes regular rechargable batteries! The down side -- camera will tell you when you need the flash, but you must manually flip the flash up for it to work. Once you get use to it, it's not that big of a deal.

    5 of 5 Great Camera/Great Price Wednesday, November 28, 2007
    A Customer from Miles Texas
I wanted an SLR camera, but can't afford one. This is as close as you can get to one, and it is 1/4 of the price. The zoom is excellant and so is the image stabilazation. The action photo's are great (like kid's basketball games, etc.) with no blurring. I live in the country and they were spraying the cotton with an airplane. I took the camera out and got a perfect picture of the plane as it passed in front of me (about 100 yds off). I'm very impressed so far. Only had the camera for a couple of months.

    5 of 5 Canon Powershot S5 IS review Tuesday, November 27, 2007
    D.S. from Hays, KS
This is an amazing camera, very easy to use without having to go digging into the owners manual. We needed a quick camera with little or no shutter lag and a strong flash so as not to miss any precious moments with our little ones. This camera does not disappoint, it shoots very quickly, does great on batteries, has the tilt screen which comes in very handy for shooting at extreme angles. The superzoom is spectacular, 12x optical and 48x total with the digital zoom gives very good pictures even at full zoom. The Image stabilization makes a huge difference especially when shooting with the zoom lens, a very nice feature and I can't imagine buying a camera without it. The only complaints I have are the included 32mb SD card (could be bigger, but I guess its better than nothing)....and the lens cap pops off if you even slightly brush against it. It tends to come off when going in and out of the camera bag. Those are very minor details and didn't affect my purchasing this camera as I knew about these details before. Picture quality is excellent and with all of the settings (including manual controls), there's no limit to what you can do with this camera. Buy.com had the best price plus free shipping, you can't beat it. Highly recommended, an excellent camera for the money!

Check the web for indepth reviews... I've had this camera for a few months now, and have been extremely happy with it! Looked at several models, but this one always came up on top or close - but if you can get it for a good price, it's a no-brainer!

    4 of 5 Color comment Monday, August 20, 2007
    Russ from Hyde Park, NY
I had an S1, S2 and now the S5IS. All were good but this one is the best as far as the resolution and light sensitivity. I have small complaint about the zooming on the S5. It might be the digital OR the optical but this is what happens at several zoom levels. It isn't as good as the others whereas, the color convergence is notably off target when a picture is magnified on a PC. This creates various color borders and slight overlap around the subjects, which never happened with the earlier versions of this camera. I've done several tests to rule out operator error and even thought of returning the camera because of it, but the benefits outweigh this occurance.
