 | Canon Powershot G9 Digital Camera Review DigitalCameraReview.com Published on: 9/25/2007 7:03 PM | | The G9 has a few warts, but at this point in time and when compared to the other cameras in its class - the G9 is as good as it gets. If that's not enough, RAW is back, the G9 is more powerful, it has more features, and it's cheaper (MSRP) than its predecessor.

The G series cameras has always been the top of the line small digital cameras from Canon and they have come out with the ultimate in the series! The G9 has many of the features that a full size digital SLR has, sans the capability to change lenses. It takes great high resolution quality photos! Being able to take pictures in the RAW format is something you won't find in any other small digital cameras. There are so many features on it that you really need to sit down and figure all of them out but once you do, great photos are a snap! If you can't get a high quality photo from the G9, you must not know how the camera works. I had a situation where I was taking photos of people in front of a white wall and the faces kept coming out dark even with the flash. I figured it out that the white wall was causing the problem so I made some adjustments and the picture came out great! If you buy the G9, and are serious about getting the most out of the camera and/or taking control of your G9 and getting great photos, I would highly recommend getting "A Short Course In Canon PowerShot G9 Photography" by Dennis P. Curtin. The book explains in detail on how to get the most out of your G9 and some of the logic behind the camera (like my situation with the white wall). If you enjoy photography and taking superb photos, this is your camera! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 G9 is a solid performer Friday, December 28, 2007 A Customer from Atlanta, GA
The G9 has been a solid performer with no problems so far. I purchased a 4GB SDHC card to go with it and the pictures are breathtaking. It does have more options for tailoring your pictures so it is not for the true point-and-shoot crowd. I wanted a rangefinder camera and that is what this is designed for. Was this review helpful?

I purchased this camera to replace my Sony Cybershot DSC-W7B.
Before I owned various Olympus models and my very first digital camera was Epson PC EZ 3000.
Firs impression of Canon G9 was mixed. Solid body, a bit on the heavy side, fast boot up time, nice ergonomics large LCD and many options to tweak the settings may have seemed as a perfect choice. But I was disappointed by quality of point and shoot pictures. The build in flash is too weak and images indoor come out blurry, not sharp with some noise.
Black color of camera leaves fingerprints; face detection is some gadget that doesnt help much in my opinion it causes more harm. Digital zoom is slow and there is no zoom available while taking Video. My main concern is the picture quality. My 7 Megapixel Sony took better pictures, even cheap Olympus was better for indoor shooting. I am not even comparing this Canon to 7 years old 3.2 Megapixel Epson. I never owned Canon cameras before and I am not sure if I got a lemon? My LCD shows blemishes on the right lover corner when displaying dark images, something with backlit perhaps. It looks like $439 price tag doesnt justify the quality. Canon didnt include a camera case, memory card is 32MB. Is it a joke? Why even bother with such capacity?
I am thinking of returning this camera if day time shots are as bad as indoors. Otherwise will just RMA for replacement to get normal LCD display.

5 of 5 Batteries/controls are great Friday, November 30, 2007 A Customer from Montevideo, MN
I went from a camera that took 4 pictures before changing batteries to several hours--still playing with it so my hours are playing with it so far. When you select the scenes mode while focusing on the object and look through the large monitor you can switch through the scenes you can see the changes like the lighting. The focus is great on this camera also--I still not use to how the zoom level moves so fast. I sure don't have any complains so far on this camera. Was this review helpful?
