Canon Powershot G9 Digital Camera Review
DigitalCameraReview.com
Published on: 9/25/2007 7:03 PM
The G9 has a few warts, but at this point in time and when compared to the other cameras in its class - the G9 is as good as it gets. If that's not enough, RAW is back, the G9 is more powerful, it has more features, and it's cheaper (MSRP) than its predecessor. ...read the full review

4 of 5 NOT D-SLR REPLACEMENT, BUT I DID. Wednesday, May 28, 2008
bradley.marshall from lafayette, la
I recently sold all of my D-SLR gear because I couldn't justify the amount of money I spent on it with the little use I was getting out of it. I purchased the G9 for its portability, the hot shoe, and it's RAW capability. It takes some great pictures, but I'm already missing the creamy shallow depth-of-field I was getting with my f/2.8 lenses that I recently sold. I am a Nikon man, but it wasn't difficult for me to make the change to Canon since Nikon doesn't offer a point-and-shoot with RAW capabilities. I kept a couple of my SB-25's because they work on the G9, but only in manual. I can also fire them remotely with my Gadget Infinity remotes. I do miss the speed of the D-SLR, but the extra $2000 now in my pocket eases that. I find the price to be a little steep, but what can you do when this is the only show in town that shoots RAW (unless I missed something else out there). I added the Richard Franiec grip and a LensMate lens adaptor with a UV filter. These give the G9 a more comfortable feel akin to a D-SLR and the LensMate with the filter protect the lens and helps keep dust out of the body. The sensor cannot be cleaned like a D-SLR. I debated on the grip because of the price, but is definitely worth the money. After being accustom to using only the viewfinder in my D200, I have to re-learn, or un-learn, and go back to the LCD screen, which suffices. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO SHOOT MANUAL OR DON'T KNOW WHAT RAW IS OR HAVE NO INTENTION TO USE AN ACCESSORY FLASH, DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS CAMERA! There are less expensive models out there that do not have the features offered in the G9, but will take pictures as good as the G9 if you only use AUTO. If you like to experiment with your shots and know how to recover exposure in a RAW file, this might be the camera for you. Many people will say that this cannot replace your D-SLR. I'm here to tell you that it can, but with limitations. Just expect a little less than what your used to in shooting and finished product.

5 of 5 G9 is the ultimate in small digital cameras Wednesday, February 13, 2008
mini5280 from Aurora, CO
The G series cameras has always been the top of the line small digital cameras from Canon and they have come out with the ultimate in the series! The G9 has many of the features that a full size digital SLR has, sans the capability to change lenses. It takes great high resolution quality photos! Being able to take pictures in the RAW format is something you won't find in any other small digital cameras. There are so many features on it that you really need to sit down and figure all of them out but once you do, great photos are a snap! If you can't get a high quality photo from the G9, you must not know how the camera works. I had a situation where I was taking photos of people in front of a white wall and the faces kept coming out dark even with the flash. I figured it out that the white wall was causing the problem so I made some adjustments and the picture came out great! If you buy the G9, and are serious about getting the most out of the camera and/or taking control of your G9 and getting great photos, I would highly recommend getting "A Short Course In Canon PowerShot G9 Photography" by Dennis P. Curtin. The book explains in detail on how to get the most out of your G9 and some of the logic behind the camera (like my situation with the white wall). If you enjoy photography and taking superb photos, this is your camera!

5 of 5 G9 is a solid performer Friday, December 28, 2007
A Customer from Atlanta, GA
The G9 has been a solid performer with no problems so far. I purchased a 4GB SDHC card to go with it and the pictures are breathtaking. It does have more options for tailoring your pictures so it is not for the true point-and-shoot crowd. I wanted a rangefinder camera and that is what this is designed for.

3 of 5 Not Impressed Monday, December 10, 2007
Len from Eatontown, NJ
I purchased this camera to replace my Sony Cybershot DSC-W7B. Before I owned various Olympus models and my very first digital camera was Epson PC EZ 3000. Firs impression of Canon G9 was mixed. Solid body, a bit on the heavy side, fast boot up time, nice ergonomics large LCD and many options to tweak the settings may have seemed as a perfect choice. But I was disappointed by quality of point and shoot pictures. The build in flash is too weak and images indoor come out blurry, not sharp with some noise. Black color of camera leaves fingerprints; face detection is some gadget that doesn’t help much in my opinion it causes more harm. Digital zoom is slow and there is no zoom available while taking Video. My main concern is the picture quality. My 7 Megapixel Sony took better pictures, even cheap Olympus was better for indoor shooting. I am not even comparing this Canon to 7 years old 3.2 Megapixel Epson. I never owned Canon cameras before and I am not sure if I got a lemon? My LCD shows blemishes on the right lover corner when displaying dark images, something with backlit perhaps. It looks like $439 price tag doesn’t justify the quality. Canon didn’t include a camera case, memory card is 32MB. Is it a joke? Why even bother with such capacity? I am thinking of returning this camera if day time shots are as bad as indoors. Otherwise will just RMA for replacement to get normal LCD display.

5 of 5 Batteries/controls are great Friday, November 30, 2007
A Customer from Montevideo, MN
I went from a camera that took 4 pictures before changing batteries to several hours--still playing with it so my hours are playing with it so far. When you select the scenes mode while focusing on the object and look through the large monitor you can switch through the scenes you can see the changes like the lighting. The focus is great on this camera also--I still not use to how the zoom level moves so fast. I sure don't have any complains so far on this camera.
