Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera Review
DigitalCameraReview.com
Published on: 2/19/2008 7:31 PM
To sum the A590 up in a single sentence, as a basic, compact picture taking tool it simply doesn't get much more solid and consistent than this. While there may have been room for more updates (meaning, ultimately, that Canon may have to fight a little harder to keep strong competition at bay with what is largely last year's model), the PowerShot A590 IS remains a strong basic package that's definitely worth considering....read the full review

5 of 5 I'm happy. Wednesday, May 06, 2009
SA Texan from San Antonio, TX

Even though this model was disco'd by Canon before I bought it. I was impressed by the reviews I read. I tried to purchase it at Office Max but like so often happens their advertised price was good but they had none in stock in any of the four stores in my small city of 5M+. I found it at Adorama through Buy.com. I ordered it. It came in the time predicted. I was very happy with the getting it. I've taken two pictures with it. They were both great. One of my girl friends likes it very much. She bought hers at the PX and paid more for it.

5 of 5 Cannon A590 great point and shoot Tuesday, May 05, 2009
GatorTom from Asheville, NC
This is my first digital camera. (I previously used a $400 Cannon Rebel film camera.) After my first 100 pictures, I am very pleased. I tried the camera out at a recent college sports club gathering which was held under a picnic pavilion at a park. The sun outside--the background-- was really bright while it was quite dark inside. The "auto" setting did a great job of selecting the right settings to get people and faces properly lighted in spite of the bright background. (Of course, the multiple manual control features would allow a photographer to easily accomplish this manually but the fact that the auto setting could handle this so well really surprised me. The camera is easy to grip in spite of its--to me--tiny size and the view finder was a significant help for those pictures I took in bright sun where seeing the display was difficult. The effective view finder is a great asset just because it is what I am used to thus making the jump to digital pretty seemless. I had a pretty high expectation for this camera based on prior reviews and am happy to say that it appears to be exceeding those expectations for quality, convenience, and transport size.

4 of 5 Canon PowerShot Monday, March 16, 2009
Melanie from Cleveland, Ohio
It is a great camera I am just not thrilled with instructions. There are things that you need to know right when you start using the camera that they don't tell you about until much later in the instruction book.

4 of 5 Great Camera for the Money Saturday, January 31, 2009
Jerry from Rockford, IL
Very nice camera for a very little money. It has more features than most people will ever use and produces nice (not perfect) pictures. The buy.com price and service were a strong part of my decision to buy. Bottom Line: Great Camera for a very small price!

5 of 5 Best value around Wednesday, January 07, 2009
KG from Mountlake Terrace, WA
After my last digital camera died I spent a good deal of time researching replacements. In addition to ease of use and good picture quality, key for me was SD card acceptance, as I have several, and the use of AA batteries. I no longer want the expense and hassle of proprietary batteries. This camera met all my conditions and exceeded all my expectations. It is easy to use and is ready to shoot less than 2 seconds after turning the unit on. There is a bit of a delay between shots when using the flash; some cameras are better, some are worse. I have rechargeables, but installed the alkaline batteries that came with the unit. I do NOT use my lcd screen for review, other than looking at the initial shot, and I have taken over 140 pictures without changing batteries thus far. The picture quality is astounding for what I basically use as a point and shoot. My wife liked this camera so much she asked for one of her own for Christmas. We now own two, although my daughter is now coveting mine......

5 of 5 Great camera at a great price! Wednesday, January 07, 2009
Connie M from Tiffin, OH
Absolutely a great camera. I bought these for my 10yr old and 11yr old. I have a Digital SLR and the kids wanted to learn photography too. My children had no problem learning to use this camera and they love the features. It is small enough to carry anywhere, yet solid enough to feel the quality. They constantly use the video feature to capture themselves singing and dancing. I feel the pictures are amazing. Many times I would want to use this camera instead of bringing out the big, heavy camera and equipment. This camera is great for everyday photography. The pictures are awesome.

4 of 5 Good Deal Wednesday, January 07, 2009

overall, this camera is good, with nice design and not bad performance. But what I am not very satisfied is that I always need to use some batteries, that is horrible.

5 of 5 Great Camera, Good Price and Fast Delivery Saturday, January 03, 2009
Jerry from Fort Worth, Texas
Bought the A590IS as a replacement for a still-working PowerShot A40. In addition to being an 8 megapixel camera, the zoom is slightly better than the A40. The camera is a bit smaller and lighter (due to utilizing 2 AA batteries rather than four). I am very happy with the purchase and Buy.com's price and fast delivery were plus factors.

5 of 5 Immensely loaded camera!!! Friday, January 02, 2009
Trevor Kennedy from Orange, CA
I own 4 DSLR cameras and numerous lenses (totalling over $1300), and bought this camera for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift; and to keep her away from my equipment;) While showing her how to use it, I fell in love! This rivals some of the top point-and-shoot digital cameras, for hundreds of dollars less. Takes gorgeously detailed photos, with rich colors. If you buy this camera, experiment with some of the features; you'll be glad you did! The wide-angle lens is a fun addition as well (sold seperately). In my opinion, the best digicam in its class!

5 of 5 Best Camera for the Price! Friday, January 02, 2009
Wolfe from Chicago, IL
This camera is perfect with all the features a regular user would need. You can't beat the price!! I upgraded from the A540. I would like the macro to be a bit finer, for detailed shots for websites, and the white balance should have more options. Slight delay with the shutter when taking a shot. For on-line sellers, an a/c adapter will need to be purchased to save battery power, as it doesn't come with the camera. I like that you can adjust the power of the flash! Has a nice video capability also. You will need to buy a memory card, maybe 2 or 4 GB, as the card that comes with it, is only just enough to "test" it out. Durability is a 10! I dropped this camera on a hardwood floor and it still works! (only a tiny chip out of the corner). I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone!

5 of 5 Great Camera Thursday, January 01, 2009
A Customer from LaGrange, IL
One of the best cameras I've ever purchased and it is the best value of any compact camera with only a cost of around $100. Very easy to use. It has a very short delay for the next shot and it only takes 2 double AA batteries. Comes with only a Cannon SD 32 memory card but still A GREAT BUY!

5 of 5 Great deal, great camera Thursday, January 01, 2009
Bobby from Baton Rouge, LA.
I had been researching a little off and on and settled on the A590 but just was waitiing for the right price. Buy.com had the special offer with PayPal and that was all that was needed. The camera arrived quickly. I was a little dissappointed in the apparent plastic carcass but I am more used to the higher priced cameras metal casings. After using the camera a while I began to appreciate the light plastic weight design. The camera was easy to use right out of the box and the resulting photos are stunning. Very happy with my bargain purchase.

5 of 5 Great Camera - Super Price Thursday, January 01, 2009
Fire Fighter Mike from NJ
I have to admit, I am biased towards Canon video and photographic products - they are just that good. The user interface is so intuitive my 8 year old can take all kinds fancy shots. The manual is so easy to understand, my 8 year old sat down and started reading it. Canon hit a home run - low price, easy to use, great pictures. Image stabilization is a huge plus.

5 of 5 Great Camera at a GREAT price Thursday, January 01, 2009
Bob from Feeding Hills, MA
Love the camera. It has so many options and works very well. The screen is nice and big and the camera also has the traditional view finder. Love to have both options. The only draw back is the camera only comes with a 32 MB memory card. If you buy it make sure you also get a larger capacity SD Card if you plan on using it right away to take a lot of pictures.

4 of 5 Solid performer Wednesday, December 31, 2008
A Customer from Saint Cloud, Florida
Already own a Canon A610 and bough the A590 for my daughter. The image stabilizer really makes a big difference on the handheld zoom shots. The color accuracy a saturation also much improved. Although we've had it only for a few days, I recommend it as a good choice for a point and click that also allows a lot of manual control when needed. The only negative is the lack of the swing out LCD viewer. This is a feature that I use frequently on my A610.

5 of 5 PowerShot Once Again Gives Great Value Wednesday, December 31, 2008
Kaatskill Mts from Fleischmanns, NY
I had a great experience with an earlier PowerShot camera and this one continues the experience and then some. One complaint some had with this camera is the SD Card/Battery door and the difficulity in opening it -- I found it rather easy if you push the slid button up with your thumb - hold it in position while moving you thumb then to the left. Pictures taken in low light without the flash come out good. I found overall picture quality good if not great. LCD screen size is just right. Making video's is easy and comes out very, very good. Note: forget using the 32mb card that comes with the camera and spend the $11 to get a 2GB (at least) SD Card.

5 of 5 Love Canon Powershots! Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Jim from Utica, KY
Bought this for my wife to replace our previous Canon Powershot that got dropped too many times. This is a great camera that is easy to use. I only gave a 4 on "ease of use" just because we haven't gotten into all the additional features yet. The 4 for "performance" is due to the delay from taking 1st to 2nd picture. I'm not sure what's up with it as I haven't looked into it yet. May be a setting or something that we have wrong. Overall a great camera!

5 of 5 great camera Friday, December 12, 2008
Dave from Trumbull CT
I bought this camera at a much higher price, lost a A570 on vacation and replaced it with the a590. night and day. this camera is 10 times better than the other model, takes better pictures, easier to use, puts dates on pictures if you want. although I hated losing the other camera, it turned out to be a good thing, and this price is unbelievable..

5 of 5 Excellent Point and Shoot Camera Thursday, October 30, 2008
Carl Joyner from Hilton Head Island, SC
This is my second Canon point and shoot camera. My A80 died after three years but it gave me such good service, and great pictures I stayed with Canon. The A590 is more camera than the A80 at half the cost. The standard AA batteries allow for quick change out anywhere in the world. I use my point and shoot cameras with forced flash (P setting--flash on) and without red eye and without the display. That way, I get super battery life and quick flash charge time. Just use the view finder for most photos and use your photoshop to eliminate any red eye. Simple and fool proof.

5 of 5 Viewfinder !!! Sunday, October 26, 2008
William from Miami, FL
The A590 is a good camera and a great value. I wanted a camera with a viewfinder and lots of features and manual adjustments. Howee, this one has everything I need. It accepted a 4 GB SDHC memory card and off I went to take pictures. They came out sharp, in focus and with good colors. I'm very pleased with my Canon camera.

5 of 5 good for everyday use Saturday, October 25, 2008
A Customer from Ames, IA
nice camera. You get more than 100% for the price you pay. great performance, especially if you adjust manually. However there is one, no two, big PROBLEMs 1. flash, it takes a while to reacharge, and 2. there is a dilay when you take the photo (kind of leg time) so it is not useful at all to take pictures during parties when you have to use flash. but still, you get what you pay for, and even more.

4 of 5 Easy to use Thursday, September 25, 2008
Joanne from Yorktown, NY
I am very pleased with this camera. The only minor complaint I have is that I think the images could be a little sharper. They are sharp, but I feel there is a little room for improvement. I have been using the camera on the highest resolution and super fine setting. The image stabilizer really improves the quality of photos and eliminates blur. It's easy to use. This is my first Cannon digital camera and I have to say, for less than $150, it's a good value for the money!

4 of 5 Replaced 550 with 590 Friday, August 08, 2008
bmerrow from New York
My 550 died (gears that expand and hide the lens/handle zoom hung up). I replaced this with a 590 which I hope will last longer. I expect a limited life on these pocket cameras in the lens system and did use the 550 heavily (about 25k images) but would have liked a longer life. The 590 is much improved for low light performance and the image stabilization adds to this plus improves percent of "good" images. Like all pocket cameras the 590 is a little slow from shutter press to taking the image. The eye recognition and face focus is a nice improvement but far from perfect (as noted by others). Given the price point and my use to setup/backup my digital SLRs, I rate this camera as very good, only dropping one point in overall sat.

5 of 5 Absolutely the best camera Saturday, August 02, 2008
Needle Desire from Rochester MN USA
Until now I have purchased maybe worth of $20K computers and electronics including a range of video cameras, photo cameras and others. I can say without any hesitation, THIS IS THE BEST VALUE for MONEY I have ever gotten. I bought this camera for $159 and I would say that Canon A590 IS, covers best value and quality for any camera below $350-400. I used a Nikon coolpix 8700 (which is way more expensive) and I can tell that Canon A590 is better in most aspects. The pictures are stunningly crisp and well saturated. You can take pictures without the flash and get absolutely nice pictures indoors. Video is also exceptional quality. It is easy to use, I used after few seconds I took it out of the box (it came in 3 days). The camera response is very quick. It came with a SD memory 32 mb - I bought a 4GB class 4 SD and the fun is going on... I use Linux and once I hooked the USB cable to the camera - it took me few seconds to transfer the files or see the pictures and the videos. FIVE STARS without hesitation - great JOB CANON

4 of 5 Review Monday, June 02, 2008
A Customer from Chicago,Illinois
Overall It's a cool camera. For me the best feature is "Image Stabilization".This camera can be used by anyone regardless of the expertise of taking snaps and still very good result scan be obtained. It's handy, decent and light camera. There is one loop hole.Normally Digital cameras have built in 32Mb memory but it doesn.t have. For this you have to insert an external memory card and this card will be waste once you will buy a big memory card.

5 of 5 Have a lot of batteries on hand... Saturday, May 24, 2008
Patty from Greenwood, IN
This camera is great. It takes great pictures and has a lot of settings that are easy for a beginner to use. My only complaint is that it eats batteries like candy. I bought several sets of rechargeable after I used a set of batteries each day for the first three days. I know I may have been using it more than usual by taking a lot of pics to get used to it, but even on the day when I took a "normal" amount of pictures, it ran through a fresh set of batteries. I do love that it takes AA batteries though because if the batteries run out while I'm out somewhere I can buy a pack of AA anywhere. The software that comes with the camera for transferring pictures to the PC is easy to use. Overall, a great camera for the money and I am thrilled with my purchase.

4 of 5 Good Camera for the price Sunday, May 04, 2008
Me from Douglas, GA
For the price you can not do much better than this camera. I gave it a 4 on performance and overall satisfaction because the picture to picture time frame with flash on is about 8 to 10 seconds and if you do not use the flash you pictures can be a tad out of focus if you move during the shot. But you can't be too critical for a camera at this pricepoint. To better these two things you'll end up spending over $200 and probably more on a higher end camera. Otherwise, no other complaints and good deal overall.
