We're used to laser printers that are big and bulky, but the size of the inkjet Canon PIXMA MX850 took us by surprise as it is both wide and deep. You have to remove a huge quantity of packing tape to get to the power cord, ink cartridges and the print head, which are packed inside the printer....read the full review

    5 of 5 Wow! What a great printer! Friday, June 19, 2009
    Ron Scott from Bentonville, Arkansas

I've always owned Canon printers and this one will not disappoint! Very functional and great prints! It is rather large and heavy, however, it has a lot of functions built in and it is a sturdy printer. Directions for set up were simple and I was printing on this work horse in no time. I anticipate a number of years of use from this printer and I wish I had gotten it sooner. I highly recommend it.

5 of 5 Permanent Switch from HP Monday, February 23, 2009
    Rog from Broomfield, Colorado
I've used HP printers for well over 10 years and have had a number of them. From laser printers, to all-in-one's, to the latest inkjets. The software the print quality as well as scanning resolution all far surpassed my expectations and I have been extremely pleased with the entire package. The print quality is excellent, colors are excellent, print speed is very fast and then network, scanning, printing and faxing worked all extremely well. I especially like that you can place three pictures in the flatbed scanner and it auto detects each one and makes an individual.jpg file for each one on back to your computer over the network.

5 of 5 All good things Saturday, February 21, 2009
Thom from Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas
I am using this printer on a Mac Network. Network setup for other machines could be simpler. But it works. The scanner is awesome. When I purchased I did not read closely. When I found that it really did duplex scanning and copying, I was in love. The magazine reviewers are right. This is the best. It replaced an old HP that no longer has drivers for the Mac. That would have been alright except that The old drivers destroyed all my setup for the other HP printers. I was so fed up with HP driver hell that I moved to Canon. I am not looking back

    5 of 5 Excellent printer Monday, January 19, 2009
    Bruce from Oakland, CA
This does everything very well. I set it up for network use, and connected it to my WiFi router, and it does everything from both computers. I like how I can choose at the printer to scan to whichever computer I want, and even whichever account is active on that computer. I did have to add the scanning function for each user in OS X, but that was no big deal. It is important to set up the network function as in the instructions. Photos are great. I have just started to replace the original cartridges. I got a set of new cartridges when I got warnings that they were about to go, and when it finally said the cartridges were empty, there was not even a full drop in them.

5 of 5 Buy this printer! Tuesday, December 23, 2008
ML Sutton from Gig Harbor, WA
After using this MX850 printer for just 2 weeks, I have forever shown HP the door. The setup was a little time-consuming, but instructions are very clear and the process went smoothly. I have used the printer for faxing, copying, printing in my small business, as well as printing 8 x 10 photos for Christmas presents. The quality could not be better. The ink indicators are great to have. With the HP I never knew how far I could go before quality suffered - usually not that far. Price, value and quality - the full meal deal. Thanks Canon. You've got me hooked!

    5 of 5 This is a great printer! Tuesday, December 09, 2008
    Monique from Brigham City, UT
I followed the advice of a leading consumer product rater and purchased this printer/scanner/fax. I am not even slightly disappointed! It's amazing! I've mostly used the printer for photo printing so far, but even scanning in a photograph it came out clear and precise. If you're thinking about it, don't. Get this printer...

    5 of 5 Awesome all-in-one! Tuesday, December 09, 2008
    DeAndre' from Bowie, MD
I've had this AIO for a couple of weeks now and it's already been put through some heavy testing. The first day I set it up I started scanning rebate receipts and other stuff in for archives. The scan interface worked well whether i accessed it through the computer or on the printer. It made a folder in My Pictures that was pretty easy to find. The double-sided printing feature is a BEAST! My dad printed out nearly 200 four-page event programs in full color in a matter of hours. Saved a bunch of money from using Office Depot. The only thing I would wish it could do is print double-sided from a pc file rather than just copies. We had to print out the document and feed it back in to make the double-sided master, then use the double-sided copy function. Small inconvenience for all the other features! Haven't used the fax function yet.

5 of 5 Best multifunction ever Friday, December 05, 2008
A Customer from New York, NY
Finally! A multifunction printer that does EVERYTHING right, rather than the typical experience where they don't do anything well. This little puppy sits on the network and is accessible to all computers for printing and FAXing or scanning. Ink is a little pricey though. Haven't used the thing enough to know how long a cartridge lasts yet, but I have high hopes based upon the rest of the experience so far.

    5 of 5 Great all-in-one. Highly recommended Friday, December 05, 2008
    Steve from Normal, IL
The functionality of this printer is great. I have it connected to my wireless network so I can print from our 3 laptops. The only functionality I have not used is the fax machine. I do not have a land line so I have not been able to test this. The setup was a bit of a chore, but once it is done, it is a great machine. I bought this based on Consumer Reports recommendation and I am completely satisfied.

    Ron from Mahopac, New York
It does it all well... 2 sided coping, 2 sided scanning, 2 sided printing... that is why I bought it - and I spent a lot of time looking! NOTHING else that does 2 sided scanning costs less than twice this does. Intelligent ink design tank and function.

5 of 5 Nice All in One - and networks Tuesday, December 02, 2008
    Jim from Media PA
I owned another Pixma that I really liked, and wanted one that had a fax. I bought another Pixma without question, the first one was great. I have a home office, and this is perfect. I wouldn't want to run 20 copies of a 50 page document on it like a workhorse copier, but for what I need the fact that you can put in a 20 page paper and make copies is pretty great. Nice scanner, can scan to PDF, and also can hook straight into the network or onto a computer - it is really nicely designed to work on a home / small office network. I would buy another one (but I have too many printers now)

5 of 5 Great Printer - Troublesome Network Install Tuesday, December 02, 2008
    Bob from Springfield, MO
I previously owned a MP730 which finally needed replacing. I purchased the MX850 3 weeks ago and have no complaints with performance. However I had a really hard time installing as a network printer. The instructions for doing so were very confusing - and I'm a PC technician. The network setup program just wouldn't run correctly and I had to dig down into the CD for the individual setup programs and run them individually. I did finally manage to get it working on my main computer but couldn't get the network scan utility to work on my second computer. I would imagine that setting up to be connected via USB would be a great deal more straightforward.

5 of 5 This Printer Rocks! Tuesday, December 02, 2008
    Bill from Lafayette, CO
I upgraded from an HP Photosmart 7350 which had no 64-bit drivers available. For those of you who still use and love 64-bit Windows XP, Canon has fully compatible drivers for this printer which is a beautiful thing! I can scan, print and fax from every computer on my network using only the CD provided. I had to download the 64-bit drivers as they were not provided, but they were easy to find on Canon's website. I have printed photos, scanned double-sided, multiple-sheet documents and faxed and everything works brilliantly and the quality is great. I am very impressed. I was nervous to move away from HP which I have always trusted, but I'm glad I did. I too, read many reviews and everything pointed to this printer. You really can't beat the price either.

    5 of 5 Outstanding value Monday, December 01, 2008
    A Customer from Bellingham MA
I had a Brother MFC3820CN for 4 years. Nothing but problems. I decided to replace it and purchased a mid range HP. It was worse. I decided to purchase locally to avoid shipping costs, but my brother convinced me to give this printer a try. I am so glad he did. Installation was simple. Unpacked it, plugged it in, and followed the getting started guide. Done. Prints well. Added a second computer to the network. No problem. Copying is easy. Faxing is a snap. Only thing I have not tried yet is the scanner. Oddly enough, the most used feature on the printer was one I did not think I needed or wanted. Duplex printing. HA. It is so easy and efficient, I print almost everything 2 sided now. A definte value.

I have owned several All-in-one machines --mostly from HP, but after being favorably impressed with Canon products, I have found that Canon All-in-ones cannot be beaten with anything on the market at any price. I am very satisfied with the MX850 it does everything well. Highly recommended.

5 of 5 IF YOU WANT THE BEST...BUY THE CANON MX850 Thursday, November 20, 2008
    Brad from MI
I spent 3 months researching, in search of the BEST multifunction equipment on the market. I found everything leading to the canon mx850, so I bought one from buy.com ($158) and replaced my HP unit that I paid twice as much for. I was not disappointed! This MF printer is without any doubt the BEST printer made today. So many people complain about it's size...but it replaces a fax, copier, scanner and printer. How much room do all 4 of these require??? What did you think? It was going to be one of those wimpy photo printers? It fits fine on the corner of my desk. The setup was so SIMPLE! I have a home office network and it setup itself using the CD supplied. I could print wirelessly from any of my networked computers within 10 minutes doing nothing at all! CANON...I LOVE YOU !!!!! Never will I buy another HP over Canon again!! Quality is ultimately the most important factor, and this printer has the highest resolution (quality) available from any printer. READ THE SPECS! The resolutions are the same as the high end photo printers and boy can you tell when you print photos! The pictures are better than the same ones I printed at Snapfish.com and Walgreens. As for text...well its hard to get laser quality text on an inkjet but, this is the closest I've seen. Much better than HP's top of the line inkjet! QUIT RESEARCHING AND BUY THIS PRINTER>>> YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!

5 of 5 2nd Canon All in One - even better than the first! Wednesday, October 15, 2008
    Debbie from Marietta, GA
This is my 2nd Canon All in One and I love this one even more. The onscreen display is nice, the feeder tray & the DUPLEX option is awesome. I gave my other Canon All in One to my Mom when I got this one & she loves it too. BE SURE TO BUY A CABLE though. I thought I threw it away but soon realized it wasn't included - that's the only drawback. Fantastic product - can't beat it for the options and the price!

    5 of 5 Awesome Printer Monday, October 13, 2008
    Big Walt from New Jersey
I read about a million reviews on all in one printers and finally selected the MX850. Now that I have it, I'm very glad that I picked it. The printer works great and it prints out spectacular photos. It also scans very well. One of the things I wanted to do was to scan about 3000 old pictures that my mother had given to me. I discovered by accident that the printer scans each picture on the scanner into a seperate file. Now instead of doing one at a time I'm doing as many as fit on the scanner as long as there is a small space between them. Overall very satisfied! The only think I was surprised at was the size. It is a bit larger that I expected but I have plenty of room. Make sure you read the dimensions of the printer.

5 of 5 Good choice for home Wednesday, October 08, 2008
    A Customer from Cordova, TN
I think that his is one of the better all-in-ones for the price, you can't beat it. It's easy to set up print quality is very good (haven't) done a photo yet. Love the paper tray and the fax works well with the home phone line. The paper feed for the copier is a nice touch also. Only drawback is that it is a little big.

    Kathy from Gretna, VA
This has already been my favorite all-in-one printer! The set up directions could have been a little better; they weren't bad just not as thorough as I would like. This printer was much larger than I expected. It will meet our needs for a small church very nicely.

    5 of 5 Solid all-in-one printer Wednesday, September 03, 2008
    MN from Raleigh, NC
I am very happy with my Canon Pixma MX850. I've had it for a couple of months now and haven't run into any real problems. Installation was pretty easy, though it would have been better if it didn't require connecting by USB and installing the software first. I noticed that one reviewer said that the scanner couldn't be used wirelessly. That has not been my experience, though I would think you'd want to be at the printer anyway to put the source you want to scan on it. Someone also mentioned that there is no way to stop the fax from answering automatically, I've done it with mine so it must be possible. The auto duplex feature is a little on the slow side, but then again now I can just set it all up and walk away. I definitely recommend this printer.

5 of 5 Great Home Office Multifunction Device Saturday, August 23, 2008
    Casey from Pensacola, FL
The Canon PIXMA MX850 is clearly designed with a home office environment in mind, as its advanced document-handling abilities and unexceptional photo quality suggest. If you're looking for a full-time photo printer, then you should look elsewhere; but if your scanning and printing needs routinely call for excellent text quality, convenient duplexing, scanning multipage documents, and the flexibility offered by two paper trays, then the MX850 will fit the bill perfectly. Printer output is very good, with a few caveats. Everyday printing is very speedy, and the text output of the MX850 is fantastic, giving some laser printers a run for their money. There is one caveat pertaining to duplex printing which causes duplex-printed text documents to appear dark gray instead of black. In order to reduce bleeding through on double-sided documents, the printer uses only colored inks (no black) for double-sided printing. If you prefer to print most of your documents using black ink only (which I would recommend in order to conserve the expensive colored inks), know that you won't be able to do so when printing in duplex mode. Unfortunately, the photo quality of the MX850 is not as outstanding as the text quality. It produces nice-looking (even frame-worthy) prints on photo paper, but you won't mistake them for professional prints. This all-in-one was purchased to replace an HP model which had drivers that were not very Mac-friendly. In every respect (except for photo quality), the PIXMA MX850 is far superior to the HP Photosmart it replaced, and it works flawlessly with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard.

This is my first Canon printer, after owning several HPs. I'm very happy with it. Though it is very large, printing and scanning speed and quality are great. No problems with set up, including wireless printing. Excellent printer, great price.

    5 of 5 Excellent all-in-one Thursday, August 07, 2008
    A Customer from Pepperell, MA
Quiet, good photos, sharp type, the list of accolades goes on. As should be expected, because it does so much, the learning process for a non-techno-geek can be somewhat extended. Lots of learning-as you-go. That being said, each time one must refer to the manual, one is pleasantly surprised to find another capability. Hats off to Canon!

5 of 5 In response to: I'm SO happy with this printer! Mo Monday, July 21, 2008
    CanonGuy from Lake Success, NY
Remember that there are two paper trays on the MX850: One is the Auto Sheet Feeder in the back of the printer. This auto sheet feeder holds 150 pages. There is also a paper cassette below the output tray that also holds 150 pages, bringing the total capacity to 300 pages of paper.

4 of 5 High speed printing; good quality output Monday, July 14, 2008
    avairinc from Jacksonville, Fl
The MX850 does everything it says it does. Printing speed and quality are very good; setup is quick. Two shortcomings: the fax function does not have memory capability--once the fax is received and printed you have only the hard copy. The print function can be accessed through a print server but the the scanning function can't be set up wirelessly--it must be connected to a computer.

Switched from an HP printer to the Canon MX850. Great printer. Easy setup and very initiative to set up and use. Really like the 2 paper trays. Print quality is great, prints quickly and quietly. Only complaint is that there is no way to stop the fax from answering automatically.

5 of 5 excellent all in one!!!! Saturday, June 21, 2008
    A Customer from Dallas, Texas
I have had this printer for about a month and love it. It is very user friendly switching between functions and paper sources. The quality of prints is excellent. I believe this is the best $200-$250 multifunction on the market. The only thing it was missing from the factory was the wireless feature but I was able to buy the adapter for $25. I love the seperate ink cartridges and this one holds 3 times the ink of the HP and the same cost per cartridge. Fairly easy setup, not all the extra parts of other printers.

5 of 5 I'm SO happy with this printer! Monday, June 02, 2008
    CP from Memphis, TN
I have an active small business office and I've stayed away from the all in ones because it seemed you had to sacrifice quality in one or more of the functions. Those days are definitely gone with the Canon MX850! This unit actually improved performance in quality and speed over the scanner, printer, and fax it replaced. Everything, even photo printing, is top notch quality and REALLY easy to use. It looks GREAT and my desk looks better without the 3 machines I was able to remove now that I have this unit. Only small quibble is that it doesn't hold much paper. But it's worth the inconvenience to keep the unit a little smaller so I don't mind. Outstanding product! Highly recommend!

5 of 5 Great so far... Sunday, June 01, 2008
    Tony from Eastchester, NY
My first AIO, and though only had for a month, very impressive. Quiet, fast, great quality on text printouts, connected (wired to my router) all my computers to it easily including a wireless laptop...and can leave the printer and router on w/o a PC on, so all can print without having a main computer on. Very nice paper handling of different types of paper, including business card sheets. Have not tried envelopes yet. Auto-duplex if you require, and can set options on the fly depending on what you are printing. And cartridges are inexpensive in comparison. Very impressive for the price...

    5 of 5 Best Ever Monday, May 12, 2008
    A Customer from Atlanta, GA
This is by far the best printer I've ever owned. It's got great print quality, even on the fastest speed (which is super-fast), and the ink cartridges are inexpensive and last a very long time. I can't recommend it enough. It is well worth the price.

5 of 5 Better Quality for Less Thursday, May 08, 2008
    fmraumer from Spokane, WA
I have always used HP All in One's but with the quality dropping and the price of their cartridges getting so expensive I thought I would try the Canon PIXMA MX850. The quality is excellent, cartridges much less expensive, and the operation is easy. Set-up is a breeze.

5 of 5 great value for user friendly all-in-one Monday, April 28, 2008
    A Customer from Harrisburg, PA
Bought mainly for printer (letters and greeting cards) and scanner functions, have not used fax or copier functions as yet. Have scanned from platen, ADF single side and duplex. ADF has trouble with older paper that is not smooth. Had to re-insert from other side or do some pages from platen but overall not bad if you plan out scan jobs ahead of time. We scan right into Adobe pdf format but software PrestoPage Manger and ScanSoft OmniPage are included. Downloaded greeting card design from Canon Creative Park website (free) and then used the printer utility solutions center to print out the greeting card in color. Previously used a Canon i560 printer and Microtek E3 Plus scanner, both parallel port. The Canon printer died last year and a new print head did not fix the problem. The printer lasted 4 ½ years and served us well. Have used Lexmark and HP ink jet printers prior to the Canon and will not go back to them. The Microtek scanner still works but occasionally the NT drivers freeze the XP operating system and we have to reboot the pc. We did look at Canon and Microtek websites to pick a new printer and a new scanner but when this model appeared, it looked like great value. So far, our family hasn’t been disappointed. Delivery from Buy.com was fast; shipped from warehouse in NJ.

5 of 5 Great for small networks Sunday, April 27, 2008
    Graham from Houston, tx
I purchased this printer for my home, where I have a small network. I have a split network (wired and wireless) and a hardware firewall. Fot this type of network, you do need to ensure that everything is on the network segemnt, otherwise it can be a bit tricky to set-up for some computers. On a "normal" home network, it would be a breeze. Printing is great and so far have not had any problems with it. Great value for money. Be sure to check out the Canon site for updated drivers and utilities.

    5 of 5 WOW!!! What a machine! Monday, April 14, 2008
    Ann from Tavares, Fla
First, this is a very large combo printer, so make sure you have room for it. Size aside, this is a very nice combo machine full or features that will take months to discover. This machine is well suited for home or home office use. The all-in-one features can't go without bragging; it does it all, and without effort. Keeping it in copy mode with the power on, will take phone calls and faxes all day without much power consumption thanks to the sleep mode. The machine sits idle until a call or fax comes in, it quietly performs its duty and then goes back to sleep mode. The same can be said for the printing functions, both copying and printing. The duplex copying and two paper trays are a definite added bonus. I have printed pictures, both from my camera direct and from my pc and have been pleased with the results. I have scanned a few items with it so far and have been pleased, though I have read in some other reviews that some color reproduction may be a little off. I personally haven't had that problem. The only down side is setting this machine up. The print heads aren't installed at the factory, you have to install these and perform an alignment procedure. Once installed, though, it prints effortlessly. Setup, in general, is long, drawnout and tedious. You have to read a lot and perform a few steps to get the most out of this machine. Once setup, though, it is a very nice, strong, dependable unit.....just what you would expect from Canon. The price from Buy.com can't be beat either. I haven't seen it any cheaper anywhere else.

    4 of 5 Just waiting ... Monday, April 14, 2008
Barry Genaske from San Marcos, Texas
I'm just waiting for 'the other shoe to drop'. I had my printer for less than 48 hours when it stopped working ... gave me an error code, with no explanation on the LCD panel. Couldn't find an explanation in any of the printed material or online. Couldn't find a phone number, in the materials, for assistance. Finally, I called the corporate office and was transferred to Customer Service. The person, understandably not a techie, didn't know the answer and Tech Support wouldn't be open until 10:00am. She called the engineering department and they told her that the Error Code indicated that the print head was bad and needed to be replaced. To their credit, they over-nighted a new print head to me. However, I feel that their in-house quality control is poor and they are getting customer to 'field-test' their products. Other than that, the product works as advertised and, as long as I don't have any more 'issues', I am happy with my purchase.

    5 of 5 Great printer Saturday, April 12, 2008
    A Customer from Vancouver, WA
I have not used it to print photos so I cannot comment on that. I set it up to use on my home/office network (Mac, Airport Time Capsule.) Setup was quite easy and I was amazed at how well I was able to scan docs via the doc feeder ( and duplexer). I can save in various formats to include pdf. The printer is relatively quiet and speedy. The Canon software that came with the printer is simple to use and does a great job for a home/office setup. I had to call Canon Support for a minor setup problem and they came on the line almost immediately, were courteous and knowledgeable. Overall, I have nothing to complain about and am satisfied with both the Canon printer and Buy.com.

    5 of 5 Great All-In-One Monday, March 24, 2008
    A Customer from Liberty, SC
Canon has done a good job of combining functions on this machine. It performs all of its functions well and is very easy to use. Pros: Dual paper feed, network capability, flexibility and ease of use. Cons: Large footprint and weight.
