| | Tech Reviews | | Canon PIXMA MX850 - Printer Review techradar.com Reviews Published on: 6/6/2008 4:21 PM | | We're used to laser printers that are big and bulky, but the size of the inkjet Canon PIXMA MX850 took us by surprise as it is both wide and deep. You have to remove a huge quantity of packing tape to get to the power cord, ink cartridges and the print head, which are packed inside the printer....read the full review |

5 of 5 In response to: I'm SO happy with this printer! Mo Monday, July 21, 2008 CanonGuy from Lake Success, NY
Remember that there are two paper trays on the MX850: One is the Auto Sheet Feeder in the back of the printer. This auto sheet feeder holds 150 pages. There is also a paper cassette below the output tray that also holds 150 pages, bringing the total capacity to 300 pages of paper. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 High speed printing; good quality output Monday, July 14, 2008 avairinc@gmail.com from Jacksonville, Fl
The MX850 does everything it says it does. Printing speed and quality are very good; setup is quick. Two shortcomings: the fax function does not have memory capability--once the fax is received and printed you have only the hard copy. The print function can be accessed through a print server but the the scanning function can't be set up wirelessly--it must be connected to a computer. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Printer Saturday, July 05, 2008 A Customer from Seattle, Washington
Switched from an HP printer to the Canon MX850. Great printer. Easy setup and very initiative to set up and use. Really like the 2 paper trays. Print quality is great, prints quickly and quietly. Only complaint is that there is no way to stop the fax from answering automatically. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 excellent all in one!!!! Saturday, June 21, 2008 A Customer from Dallas, Texas
I have had this printer for about a month and love it. It is very user friendly switching between functions and paper sources. The quality of prints is excellent. I believe this is the best $200-$250 multifunction on the market. The only thing it was missing from the factory was the wireless feature but I was able to buy the adapter for $25. I love the seperate ink cartridges and this one holds 3 times the ink of the HP and the same cost per cartridge. Fairly easy setup, not all the extra parts of other printers. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 I'm SO happy with this printer! Monday, June 02, 2008 CP from Memphis, TN
I have an active small business office and I've stayed away from the all in ones because it seemed you had to sacrifice quality in one or more of the functions. Those days are definitely gone with the Canon MX850! This unit actually improved performance in quality and speed over the scanner, printer, and fax it replaced. Everything, even photo printing, is top notch quality and REALLY easy to use. It looks GREAT and my desk looks better without the 3 machines I was able to remove now that I have this unit.
Only small quibble is that it doesn't hold much paper. But it's worth the inconvenience to keep the unit a little smaller so I don't mind.
Outstanding product! Highly recommend! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great so far... Sunday, June 01, 2008 Tony from Eastchester, NY
My first AIO, and though only had for a month, very impressive.
Quiet, fast, great quality on text printouts, connected (wired to my router) all my computers to it easily including a wireless laptop...and can leave the printer and router on w/o a PC on, so all can print without having a main computer on.
Very nice paper handling of different types of paper, including business card sheets. Have not tried envelopes yet. Auto-duplex if you require, and can set options on the fly depending on what you are printing. And cartridges are inexpensive in comparison.
Very impressive for the price... Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Best Ever Monday, May 12, 2008 A Customer from Atlanta, GA
This is by far the best printer I've ever owned. It's got great print quality, even on the fastest speed (which is super-fast), and the ink cartridges are inexpensive and last a very long time. I can't recommend it enough. It is well worth the price. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Better Quality for Less Thursday, May 08, 2008 fmraumer@msn.com from Spokane, WA
I have always used HP All in One's but with the quality dropping and the price of their cartridges getting so expensive I thought I would try the Canon PIXMA MX850. The quality is excellent, cartridges much less expensive, and the operation is easy. Set-up is a breeze. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 great value for user friendly all-in-one Monday, April 28, 2008 A Customer from Harrisburg, PA
Bought mainly for printer (letters and greeting cards) and scanner functions, have not used fax or copier functions as yet. Have scanned from platen, ADF single side and duplex. ADF has trouble with older paper that is not smooth. Had to re-insert from other side or do some pages from platen but overall not bad if you plan out scan jobs ahead of time. We scan right into Adobe pdf format but software PrestoPage Manger and ScanSoft OmniPage are included. Downloaded greeting card design from Canon Creative Park website (free) and then used the printer utility solutions center to print out the greeting card in color. Previously used a Canon i560 printer and Microtek E3 Plus scanner, both parallel port. The Canon printer died last year and a new print head did not fix the problem. The printer lasted 4 years and served us well. Have used Lexmark and HP ink jet printers prior to the Canon and will not go back to them. The Microtek scanner still works but occasionally the NT drivers freeze the XP operating system and we have to reboot the pc. We did look at Canon and Microtek websites to pick a new printer and a new scanner but when this model appeared, it looked like great value. So far, our family hasnt been disappointed. Delivery from Buy.com was fast; shipped from warehouse in NJ. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great for small networks Sunday, April 27, 2008 Graham from Houston, tx
I purchased this printer for my home, where I have a small network. I have a split network (wired and wireless) and a hardware firewall. Fot this type of network, you do need to ensure that everything is on the network segemnt, otherwise it can be a bit tricky to set-up for some computers. On a "normal" home network, it would be a breeze. Printing is great and so far have not had any problems with it. Great value for money.
Be sure to check out the Canon site for updated drivers and utilities. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 WOW!!! What a machine! Monday, April 14, 2008 Ann from Tavares, Fla
First, this is a very large combo printer, so make sure you have room for it. Size aside, this is a very nice combo machine full or features that will take months to discover. This machine is well suited for home or home office use. The all-in-one features can't go without bragging; it does it all, and without effort. Keeping it in copy mode with the power on, will take phone calls and faxes all day without much power consumption thanks to the sleep mode. The machine sits idle until a call or fax comes in, it quietly performs its duty and then goes back to sleep mode. The same can be said for the printing functions, both copying and printing. The duplex copying and two paper trays are a definite added bonus. I have printed pictures, both from my camera direct and from my pc and have been pleased with the results. I have scanned a few items with it so far and have been pleased, though I have read in some other reviews that some color reproduction may be a little off. I personally haven't had that problem.
The only down side is setting this machine up. The print heads aren't installed at the factory, you have to install these and perform an alignment procedure. Once installed, |
