5 of 5 Great lens for the price! Monday, February 16, 2009 Matt from San Diego, CA
A friend of mine introduced me to this lens a couple of years ago and had great things to say about it. After letting so much time pass by, however, I hesitated purchasing it based on some of the negative reviews I was reading. Mind you, these reviews are few compared to the countless positive reviews out there, and with just reason.
I just got this lens and I absolutely love it! As soon as I put it on my Canon 350D (Digital Rebel) it hasn't come off. I now feel I can dispel a few of the concerns I had that may be preventing others from purchasing this lens.
Construction of the lens: The exterior is made from plastic (which has prompted others to say it is cheaply made), but it does not feel any more cheaply constructed than the kit lens that came with my DSLR. I recently took my camera with this lens on a camping trip and I didn't have any issues, even when we went on a hike. I also, accidentally, dropped my camera (with this lens attached) while it was in its camera bag and everything was still fine. I would still advise caution with this lens, as I would any other lens I have purchased. I've found the auto focus to respond pretty quickly. One improvement that could be made, however, is the manual focus, which isn't the easiest to use due to the small focus ring.
Quality of photos: I really love the quality of the photos I get with this lens. This is helped partly by the focal length and the lower f-stops. On a DSLR the focal length is slightly telephoto (at 80mm instead of 50mm), which can cause a few issues if you're trying to get more wide angle shots. However, the 80mm focal length, paired with the aperture range, is great for bokeh (background/foreground blur). I love shooting at f/2.8 and below. The photos are sharp and look great. Given the zoom of the lens on DSLRs, it would work great for portraits. And I find it much easier to shoot indoors and in low light.
Price: The price can't be beat! Before getting this lens, I was also thinking about the Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens (which retails at about $300), but in considering changing to other cameras in the future, I thought it would be best to start with the f/1.8 lens. It's an excellent starter lens and a great alternative to the kit lens. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Works great on my Canon 40D Monday, September 29, 2008 Richard from Orange, CA
The 50mm lense converts to a 80mm on my Canon 40D. Works great as a portrait lense or a standard lense without much telephoto effect. Simple, compact, low light lense.
Nice for use at social events with lower light. You can photo without flash and not be obvious that you are taking pictures. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Not Bad Wednesday, May 28, 2008 A Customer from IL
Considering the price, it's really a nice lens.
You can get the blurry background effect easily and take some decent pictures when the lighting of surround is not so good.
When using aperture 2 higher grade, the pictures obviously are sharper. So don't try to use 1.8 if you could avoid use. Was this review helpful?

This is probably the only lense that runs under $100, which is something even amateurs can't pass up. If you're looking to buy your first lense aside from your standard kit lense, this is a no brainer. It's great for portrait shots as well as everyday use, but it shouldn't be your main lense. The build quality is top notch as it is produced from canon, and it has a quick focus which is always a plus. The big downside is for people who are used to using a zoom lense, because you're limited to only 50mm shots. It might be difficult to find the right angles and distances at first, but for $80? The price is right, despite any of its shortcomings. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 An Excellent Lens (Especially for the money) Sunday, June 10, 2007 Mike from Va
This is a great lens, and especially for the money! Pro's call it the "nifty fifty." Very shallow depth of field because of the large 1.8 aperture makes for great focused shots. I tried it out on my new Rebel Xti this weekend at my brother's graduation and was blown away at the pix. And Buy.com had the best prioce I could find. Highly reccomend! Was this review helpful?
