Canon Digital Rebel XTi Black 10.1 MegaPixel SLR Camera with 2.5" LCD (Black Body Only)

I purchased the Canon Rebel XTi body only because I also purchased the EF-S 55-255 f/4-5.6 IS telephoto lens at the same time. My research turned up repeated recommendations to get this lens rather than the standard lens that the kit (body & lens) contains. The camera is fantastic, with automated controls great for many shots yet allowing fully manual operation of the camera when preferred. The IS (Image Stabilizer) lens is more expensive but well worth it - it really does function as advertised (very well) and yields crystal clear images. This camera has too many features for me to comment on individually, but for a medium level photographer (who used to use a Canon SLR film camera with 400 mm zoom lens) this one has all the features I wanted and it creates an exceptional photograph. I considered the newer Rebel XSi (12 megapixel) camera, but the 10 megapixel camera more than suits my needs and I used the difference in cost between the two camera bodies toward the purchase of the better IS lens. Unless you know beyond doubt that you need 12 megapixel photos, the 10 megspixel Rebel XTi will be more than sufficient. Save your money and put it toward that IS lens!!! The one problem with the lens I selected is that it is NOT good for close-up work. Much of my photography is nature, so the lens I selected is good for zooming in on wildlife. But I also just ordered a Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. This macro lens is ideal for close-ups as well as "family photography". My recommendation is that you purchase the Rebel XTi body and get this macro lens if you can only afford 1 lens or only want one general-purpose lens. I strongly recommend the IS series of lens - they are more expensive, but well worth it, especially for those who find holding a camera steady while shooting to be a real challenge. Finally, I purchase the Canon Rebel XTi for Dummies book which is far superior to the manual Canon provides for getting acquainted with your new camera. Consider it.
