This silent film brings to life the story of CALL OF CTHULHU in three parts. Beginning in the 1920s, skipping forward to 1908 and then back to the 1870s, the story takes viewers around the globe. When a dying professor gives his great nephew several stories about the mythical monster Cthulhu and the cult surrounding it, the young man begins to hear the Cthulhu's call and becomes obsessed with investigating the legend.

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has just released their interpretation of Call of Cthulhu. "Interpretation" denotes their differing take on a meaty and difficult subject matter, for The H.P.L.H.S. has decided to do the entire story in the style of a silent film. Not settling for a lazy approach to this style, they made a film that looks, acts, and feels like it has been recently dusted off and pulled from the catacombs. This film crossbreeds modern acting and some modern film techniques with conventions and techniques of the silent era. It is jarring to anyone familiar with silent films, but once we are enveloped in the story, reservations vanish. The film creates a real sense of mood and dread through simple, sleight-of-hand means. A piece of fabric becomes a churning sea. A stop-action doll becomes the monstrous Cthulhu. The ingenuity of this dedicated team of Lovecraft enthusiasts makes us fear for our immortal souls despite ourselves.
