"...a legitimization of hardcore pornography...filthy and gritty while being elaborate and theatrical..." Alex Jackson, I Viddied it on the Screen "Take A Clockwork Orange...remove all the clothes, triple the violence...and you've got [Caligula]..." Christopher Null, FilmCritic.com
 Editor's Note
A reputedly faithful cinematic depiction of the historical events of Caligula's Rome, including the decadence and debauchery that marked his reign. This notorious release has faced rather hysterical hostility from would-be censors. Financed by Penthouse Magazine magnate Bob Guccione, who was accused of inserting hardcore sex scenes after completing photography with the impressive and esteemed cast of British actors. Contains graphic sex and violence. The R-rated version is shorter by 53 minutes!
 Plot Summary
"Caligula" is Bob Guccione's star-studded pornographic look into the world of Ancient Rome. It depicts the lusty and demented Caesar Caligula during his short-lived stint as Emperor of the mighty Roman Empire. While in power, Caligula had an affair with his sister and forced senators' wives to prostitute themselves. Caligula was finally assassinated by his own officers and replaced with his dim-witted cousin Claudius.

| | Professional Reviews | Mondo Digital 8 of 10 The standard against which cinematic sleaze must be measured, Caligula has something for everybody: top notch British actors for dramatic weight, a fact-laden script by Gore Vidal, opulent visual design and flashy colors for European film addicts, graphic and plentiful bloodshed for gorehounds, and hardcore sex of every conceivable bent for the raincoat crowd. Obviously this isn't the most comfortable mix, but Caligula still manages to retain a bizarre, shocking fascination two decades after its release...Designed to compete with the fledgling film efforts of Playboy Productions (who financed Roman Polanski's Macbeth), Caligula was Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione's attempt to break into the movie market with an utterly excessive slap to viewers' sensibilities...Remarkable, dangerous, mind-damaging stuff, and definitely not for the faint of heart.

5 of 5 An excellent cult classic Wednesday, November 28, 2007 A Viewer from Boulder, Colorado
Great costumes, sets, and actors make this the best x-rated film of all time. The plot is OK but much better than you see in other films with hard-core content. The violence is disturbing, ancient Rome was a nasty place! The sex is gratuitous (of course) but it is focused on Caligula's insanity. The additional content on discs two and three can be very intersting for fans of the original movie. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Not for the faint of heart.... Wednesday, November 28, 2007 Poe from Citrus Springs
Ive seen several versions of Caligula, This is by far the best. I'd forgotten how many huge stars are in it. tons of violence and nudity, but after a lil while all you really see is th movie for what it is, a very sick minded Ruler. Was this review helpful?
